Civil authorities stepped in with common sense

Commentary, Neil Cox, IndyChristian.com

Earthly authorities have been placed here by God to maintain civil order in a fallen world. That is, when our (including parental) acts conflict with good, reasonable practices -- especially when looking out for the interests of the most vulnerable -- these authorities are obligated to step in.

We saw one such 'authority' -- a jury of our peers -- recently act to say that a baby wasn't adequately protected when parents failed to pursue medical treatment.

And we have just now seen a judge act on behalf of boy whose parents positioned him for stress by placing him in a parochial school yet teaching him in extremely opposite ways at home.

Common sense sides with the civil authorities in both cases. How many of us, as parents, would even begin to think of doing otherwise, if it were our children in either of these cases?

Civil authorities have to act when parents' common sense (heaven forbid we'd mention Godly principles) fail to protect the vulnerable.

[Comment: However, to be equal-handed here, please know that the Indianapolis Star editorial staff have reached an opposite conclusion re the Wicca case. And a further 'news article' today clearly reflects that bias.]
