Grateful bell ringer shares her blessings

Maj. Beckie Stearns takes the floor at the Salvation Army's Harbor Light Mission. Small and bouncy, she's a cheerleader with a cause.

"Greet people whether or not they give," she urges the 40 men and some women sitting at tables in a large room. "Say 'Merry Christmas,' 'Have a great day!' 'God bless you!' "

"Help people. Make eye contact!" she adds. "It creates a rapport."

Most of her listeners sit idly. They appear not terribly interested in eye contact or much else this early -- 9:30 a.m. on a freezing cold Thursday, with snow already falling.

But not Dawn L. Chapman.
