If I regard iniquity in my heart...
by Pastor Jim BrownHorizon Christian Fellowship West
The psalmist, in Psalm 66, makes a statement in verse 18 that we should take note of and hide in our hearts: "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me".
This word "regard" means to perceive or discern that that we have iniquity in our hearts. Thus, even the smallest "issue" should be immediatley dealt with...fortunately 1John 1:9 helps us in this regard; to cleanse ourselves we simply need to confess and repent.
Issues that can be kept in our hearts often include rebellion, anger, wrath, bitterness and unforgiveness. These issues are not healthy for our spiritual life and will lead us away from God...because they hinder our prayers.
The opposite is true in the issue of regarding iniquity, as well. When we confess and repent, we have an open unhindered channel to God. The Psalmist makes that implied statement in verse 20 and then tells us that God has also not turned His mercy away.
Does the sin make it so God doesn't want to hear?? No. Rather when we regard iniquity in our hearts, God our "Heavenly Father" treats us like we would our rebellious children and lovingly waits for our return. His mercies are new every morning!
Pray with me that our hearts are right before our great God and King - our loving heavenly Father...
