A second sniper foiled by prayer!
I have had the pleasure of guiding several of the praying faithful from among all the attendees of the Church of God’s (of Cleveland, TN) 71st International General Assembly this week. The first was a group of 80+ who joined me at our State House on Sunday to pray for our leaders just as 1 Timothy 2 directs us to. On Monday it was a smaller group where they distributed gift bags to leaders offices of the same building. Tuesday I had a group of 40 students of an average age of 16 again accompany me through our State House. They wanted to see the Chapel straight away and so we went.
I gave them a number of key focuses to pray for regarding our state and capital city. We prayed…I again gave them an additional focus to pray for regarding the sniper. This was the number one request by leaders at our state's capital. I explained that back in October of 2002 a number of locals from Virginia and I prayed for the immediate arrest of the Beltway Sniper. Just hours later John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo were found sleeping in their car at a Maryland rest stop, and arrested on federal weapons charges. I told them we are again asking for the same thing here.
After we finished our time at the Chapel we prayed from the observation balcony of the House regarding the existing injunction preventing the name of Christ being spoken during the daily invocation when the House is in session. We moved on to the Indiana Supreme Court with our thoughts on the definition of marriage being challenged in so many states like WA (Yeah!). Our next stop was at the office of Mitch Daniels. Mitch was in a meeting with his Chief of Staff so we simply prayed for him and his staff, his family and for leadership as a whole. I had hoped to stall the kids long enough to see Mitch as he made his way out for the day. We took pictures and I passed out posters of our legislature for the kids to hang on their prayer closet walls. Their time had expired and they were heading towards the door to make their way back to the convention center.
Just then Mitch appeared. He apologized for needing to leave right away only to spend a moment with us but he shared with us the news that the sniper had been caught! The kids celebrated!!! They told Mitch we had just prayed for that only and hour and a half before! They were so excited at what some would call a coincidence but these children knew otherwise. You see they didn’t want to leave anything to chance so they paused and honored their heavenly Father with a conversation that included a sniper that needed to get right with God and be brought to justice. Oh did I mention these kids were from Kentucky? They were more than happy to leave this gift of prayer behind to their new Hoosier friend, Governor Mitch Daniels.
