[excerpted from the Indianapolis Star]"The arrival of the newest member of the City-County Council, representing the 11th District on the Northeastside, comes as the city's homicide rate is in the headlines and its criminal system is being deluged.
The problem, in Bateman's view, is simple: "Men not being men." He blames absent fathers.
A lifelong Democrat, Bateman is a fundamentalist Christian, and his values reflect that.
Bateman retired last fall after 33 years as a skilled tradesman and UAW organizer at the recently shuttered Chrysler foundry and became a Christian minister.
