Anna's House... a place of peace and refuge for the poor
A spray of bullets shattered windows and destroyed drywall at a new Near-Westside community center two weeks ago, but the vandalism didn't deter Lucious Newsom.And Thursday, the 91-year-old advocate for the needy fulfilled a dream of feeding the poor and providing refuge from a rough neighborhood when he opened Anna's House at 303 N. Elder Ave.
"Young men have visions, and old men dream dreams," he said, surveying the repaired building.
"This old man had a dream, and it's come true."
Many volunteers who helped repair Anna's House after the shooting returned Thursday for the house's grand opening -- a traditional Thanksgiving feast served to more than 300 people. Several members of the Indianapolis Colts donated food and signed autographs Thursday.
