'Indy Timeline' of Upcoming Events Bible Classes Move Off School Grounds
[From the Indianapolis Star]MOORESVILLE, Ind. -- Bible classes taught by a private group to third- and fourth-graders during school hours are being moved about a month after a lawsuit was filed over the practice.
The move off the grounds of the Mooresville Consolidated School Corp. is permanent and comes as the district nears a settlement on the lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, said Curt Freeman, the school district's superintendent.
"We're very close, we think, to getting an agreement resolved," he said.
The group offering the classes -- Morgan County Schools Weekday Religious Education -- has moved its program from a trailer at Neil Armstrong Elementary School to a nearby church, head instructor Mary Lee Wesner said.
She said the group was trying to find land near school property in the town about 10 miles southwest of Indianapolis where it could place its trailer. Organizers decided to move the classes after a meeting with the school district's attorney.
"He came up with a list of things we couldn't do, and that was one of them," Wesner said.
