He Found Shelter in Faith
[from the Indianapolis Star]The morning Roger Wightman's body was found in White River was freezing cold.
But it wasn't the temperature that killed him. He had drowned.
His story could have ended there, a sad end to the sad life of one of the city's estimated 750 to 900 homeless veterans. Wightman was 45.
Except it didn't.
Wightman, it turned out, was a former U.S. Navy petty officer who served on an aircraft carrier, among other ships, from 1979 to 1987 and who, after returning to Indianapolis, had waged a losing battle against alcoholism.
In the days that followed his death, Wightman's friends and family stepped forward to tell "Roger stories" of a man who, despite his alcohol problems, had found a mission in talking to others about God.
In the process, he touched people's hearts with simple acts of kindness.
