"Food banks and social service agencies around Indianapolis and across the country are feeling the sting. Less than a week before Christmas, charities report that demand for their services is hitting levels unseen in years. Family budgets squeezed by high gasoline and heating costs are driving much of it, they say, as are the mortgage crunch and job concerns.
"I don't know that we've ever had this demand for services," said Jay Height, executive director of Shepherd Community Center, which provided food to the Simpson family. "It's our toughest year."
