Christianity Today: "Q&A Barack Obama"
"I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ."Interview by Sarah Pulliam & Ted Olsen, Christianity Today Magazine
Barack Obama wants to set the record straight. He is not a Muslim, as recent e-mails falsely claim.
The Democratic presidential candidate is fighting the e-mails that have been widely circulated. Obama has been continually speaking about the role of faith in politics since his Call to Renewal address in June 2006.
In the days before the South Carolina primary, he is driving efforts to speaking with media to emphasize his Christian beliefs. His campaign also sent out a recent mailer portraying the candidate with his head bowed in prayer and says that he will be guided by prayer when he is in office.
The senator from Illinois spoke with Sarah Pulliam and Ted Olsen today about his faith, abortion, and the evangelical vote.

It's perhaps laudable that a fine magazine like CT would give the candidate a chance to state some of his views without subjecting him to immediate hard-hitting follow-up questions. Those questions will get asked sooner or later anyway. But in the meantime, they've given Senator Obama a pass... by pretty much allowing him an open mic to tell about his sense of spirituality. So let's look at some of his (not) answers...
CT Question: "So would you keep the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives open or restructure it?"
- He dodged the question. Some of us would like know the answer.
- He dodged the question. I'd like to know the answer.
- But here's an interesting portion of his response...
"Ultimately, women are in the best position to make a decision at the end of the day about these issues. With significant constraints."
Meaning what? That 'ultimately' the mother gets to make the call? The baby doesn't yet have a voice. Oh, but not really... apparently the state (the people) theoretically have a compelling interest enough to set some limits... but he's not willing to set limits on the vast majority of situations if he can't dictate the terms of the very very few exceptional situations? Sounds much more like political posturing than legislating protection of defenseless babies.
- He dodged answering the specific question being asked.

Some of those "dodges" I don't think were dodges. I agree he dodged the words born again. But he hasn't dodged the conversion. Yes it was quick here, but he has talked about it extensively before and in his books. Same with abortion, he is not going to spend a lot of time on it with a Christian magazine, but he has spoken extensively about it before and he is very pro-abortion. On the other hand he is also very much for trying to keep people from getting pregnant and giving alternatives, but he is very pro-abortion. I don't think hiding, just not spending a lot of time here.
I think it purpose for doing the interview was the Muslim thing. I can't tell you how many people that I have talked to that say that they won't vote for him because he is a Muslim. And Christians are usually perpetuating the lie. It is unfortunate. I met him a couple times while I was at University of Chicago. He is a very decent man. Disagree with his policies, but give him some respect. (Sorry, Neil, just a vent, not at you really.)
