'Indy Timeline' of Upcoming Events Jesus For President...

Last night Shane Claiborne came to Indy on his 'Jesus For President' campaign tour. The unadvertised event packed the house at Lockerbie UMC... balcony, basement & main-floor. No air-conditioning. Standing room only... filled with Christ-followers... 20-somethings, radicals and the simply-inquisitive... all listening intently.
It took me back more than 30 years ago when my wife & I were 25... living in Decatur, IL. We too went to a little-known event in a packed-but-unairconditioned UMC church, and sat cross-legged on the floor in the dark to listen to a little-known radical Christ-follower.
Last night Shane and Chris Haw (co-author) alternatively read through their scripted, almost poetic, message of Christ's kingdom and call to an authentic-but-counter-intuitive lifestyle. Irrespective of our theological and political persuasions, we can at least HOPE such a message would shake up the status-quo of American Christianity. Return us to the call of Christ in our city.

Btw, the little-known radical Jan and I went to see in 1975 was also that unconventional, authentic-to-the-bone model. In fact, he played our old church piano so hard that he broke the pedal off it... stopped in the middle of his music... unceremoniously got down on the floor underneath the piano and wired it together again... talking to the crowd all the while... then proceeded with his unique message through music.

Keith Green's message has impacted my life. Perhaps Shane accomplished the same thing last night among this new generation of 20-somethings.
We can hope.

Yeah Chris Smith! Good people and took fantastic care of both the J4P folks and us movie folks.

Thanks for the blog about Jesus for President.
We at Lockerbie Central UMC are very thankful to have been able to host this event. The Christianity that Shane, Chris, and the Psalters talk about is something that we take very seriously.
Anyways, two points:
1. The church does have air conditioning. We had over 600 people show up and at that point, the body heat beat out our air conditioning.
2. We did do advertising. NPR, facebook, and through our networks.
Thanks for help making this a special night. Hopefully, most people went home from Jesus for President ready to cast out the moneychangers out and put the Carpenter in!
