'Promiscuous Teleology'... Is this why so many reject evolution?
A pair of psychologists at Yale University have a new explanation for why so many people reject the theory of evolution -- our minds are hard-wired from birth to see design in the world around us. Paul Bloom is a psychologist at Yale and Deena Skolnick Weisberg is a doctoral candidate in psychology. Together, they argue that the roots of an anti-evolutionary impulse lie in childhood.
Their argument, found in the essay, "Why Do Some People Resist Science?" is published at Edge: The Third Culture, a Web site associated with a group known as The Reality Club. That organization, by the way, humbly describes itself as including "some of the most interesting minds in the world."
Those interesting minds are interested in knowing why so many Americans reject the theory of evolution...

For parents who are tired of taking their children to museums where the theory of evolution is presented as fact, there is now a deluxe new alternative.
The Creation Museum opens Memorial Day in Petersburg, Ky., just a few minutes across the border from Cincinnati, Ohio.
The $27 million facility offers a strictly creationist view of the world. Dozens of dinosaurs and animatronic figures usher people through the museum. The displays do not pit science against faith, but show how science backs up all the scientific claims made in the Bible.

Two-thirds of the nation’s adult population firmly embraces the idea that their most important purpose is to love God with all their heart, mind, soul and strength. However, a deeper look at people’s full array of spiritual beliefs and behavior calls into question the sincerity of their commitment.
Every year, The Barna Group explores the state of the America’s faith, examining various facets of people’s spiritual activity, faith identity, commitment and religious perspective. According to the 2007 survey, while their spiritual activities and religious identity have changed little compared to recent years, the area undergoing the most change is what Americans believe. The Barna study, which began exploring the nation’s religious behavior and beliefs in 1984, shows that commitment to orthodox biblical perspectives is slipping in a number of areas.

Writing in The Weekly Standard, Andrew Ferguson makes an important point. Everyone, it seems, has a moral cause. The virtue of Ferguson's article is that it makes the point so clearly.
He starts with the news that movies featuring characters who smoke will be given a more restrictive rating. No kidding. The people who have already corrupted the movie ratings to the extent that they communicate almost nothing of value are now targeting cigarettes for darker ratings. "Special Forces should sound a lot like the the men that Jehovah God selected to defend Israel against the invaders from the east a few thousand years ago. Gideon was the reluctant leader of an army that originally numbered about 32,000 men. Those men who trembled with fear at the prospect of defending the defenseless were allowed to quit the army, reducing the number to 10,000. God still thought that was too large an army and he did not desire an Isaralite victory in battle to be attributed to the men's own strength and valor. So he winnowed the army down to 300 men to defend Israel against the massive Midianite army. God brought about a great victory without the Israelites having to lift a finger. The Midianites killed off themselves as they turned on each other.That's us today - turning on each other.We need help in this city.
So I have a question: Can Special Forces be like that meager band of 300 who will break with the culture of death and hatred and instead of turning against one another, will turn toward and embrace and support one another?
