God's Word

Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.

God's Word

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Instead of the thornbush will grow the pine tree, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the LORD's renown, for an everlasting sign, which will not be destroyed."

Indianapolis, IN - February 25, 2009
What appeared to be an auto accident on the city's Eastside turned out to be another homicide involving 22 year old Jorge Matias-Sanchez. When emergency responders were called to the crash site of a 1989 blue Chevy Caprice near 34th & Arlington, it was determined that young Jorge had been shot in the head and declared dead at the scene.
The Indy News report stated, "Emergency personnel thought it was just a wreck, but when they got him out, they realized he'd been shot."
The reality was, IT WAS A WRECK! Another wreck of the life of our young men, their families, and our city.

Join us this Saturday as we declare Peace in the Streets, Safety for our Families, Life over Death, all in the Name of Jesus Christ who came to give us Life in abundance!

Our sufficiency is of God

by Pastor Jim Brown
Calvary Chapel on the Horizon

2Co 3:5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

============

Have you ever wondered how you’re going to do “IT”? That thing that seems insurmountable...whether you are wondering how “you” can get the meal on the table, the bill paid, the extra chore done, the 3am feeding, how you can help out grandma, work the overtime the boss just told you was mandatory, and on and on...

The answer for the Christian is “YOU CAN’T” !! We can’t accomplish anything of ourselves – our sufficiency is of God.

Our “ability” (sufficiency) only comes to us as we lean on God for His sufficiency. With God, all things are possible but in our flesh dwells NO good thing – without God we can do nothing. We must come to the realization that part of our worship experience – part of presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice to God means that we place our trust and dependence solely on the creator of the universe!Later on, in this second letter to the church at Corinth, Paul will say, “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong”. (2Co 12:9-10). God’s grace is ALWAYS sufficient for us – even when we can’t see how it could possibly be!!

“Trust me” the Lord is saying to us. “Follow my path that I’ve prepared for you” – Jesus’ path is always the perfect path for us.

Pray with me that we see God as the all sufficient One whose grace is always all that we need...

God's Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

FHL’s ‘Don’t just learn it; Experience it’ Luncheon at Outback on 3/25

A Message From the President of Faith, Hope and Love, International- Merlin Gonzales

“The Hope within You, Living from the Inside Out” is not just a pretty phrase. It is real! With the nation’s economic challenges also come the false hopes that many instill in the minds of people. Many are told that hope is found in the government, companies or other external sources. Although these have influences in our society, you and I can have an even greater impact by transforming our communities. John 17:22-23, “I have given them (the disciples and the generations to come) the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” This means that we have the Spirit of God within us, and we have the most powerful thing at our disposal: Love. 1 Corinthians 13: 13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” Everything will disappear in this world, but no one can take away the love within you and me. The God within us is our hope, and the Love within us can change the world.

You and I are given the tremendous opportunity to transform this generation through sharing the hope within us and by "Living from the Inside Out".

Community needs are growing while community resources are dwindling...

The weakening economy has created increasing hardship for many people from all walks of life. Your financial support for this Luncheon will help over 500 families that FHL International, Inc.regularly serves throughout the year. Your participation in this luncheon will help the FHL Mobile Food Pantry and you will also enjoy some delicious food yourselves provided by the Outback Steakhouse. While you are with us at the Outback, you will hear an extraordinary testimonial of hope from Al Gibson, President of Crown Coating.

Please come join us! Thank you, Merlin

God's Word

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you make the Most High your dwelling-- even the LORD, who is my refuge then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

Officials Visit Neighborhood

by Ellen Spencer (and IndyChristian CommTeam)

[Click to the cafe photo-pool]

The accessibility of Mayor Greg Ballard and his dedication to improving the various neighborhoods of the City of Indianapolis was evidenced as he visited the Unleavened Bread Cafe at the corner of 30th and Central Avenue on Thursday. Mayor Ballard's impromptu visit was witnessed by a few dozen patrons and neighbors of the small business that serves the neighborhood as not just an eatery, but also a center for ministry and community involvement.

Hostess/Founder Elease Womack [pictured here with Mayor Ballard], long-time advocate Dave Metzger, servant in ministry Shawn Schilling and Lady Gail Reaves (wife to the Pastor of the Church that meets weekly in the Community Room) all took turns speaking with the Mayor about the happenings of this blossoming business and ministry.

Some other visitors of note included: Deputy Mayor for Neighborhoods Olgen Williams, City-County Councilwoman Jackie Nytes, and a gentleman from MBE/WBE Minority and Women Business Development. Also present were members of neighborhood clergy, construction business, youth and those concerned about community enrichment.

The informal gathering was a time in which the Mayor and others could tour the facilities while learning of the cafe's history and vision in serving the community through Christian love. There was excitement and laughter as ideas were exchanged regarding the improvements that are being made as well as those that are planned for the future.

God's Word

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

The Depth of the Riches

by Pastor Jim Brown
Calvary Chapel on the Horizon

Rom 11:33-36 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? 35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? 36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

============

The Awesomeness of GOD! Do we ponder it? Do we think about how complex He is? Have we thought on the idea that He orchestrates not only the horizontal of our lives but often to make events happen that affect us, He may have had to coordinate events over days, months, years or even centuries?

Why does He do this? Because He loves you and me...it’s a simple yet extremely profound idea. God is love. He has loved us with an everlasting love. He loved us so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die in our place. Jesus is the lamb that was slain before the foundation of the world – God knew you and I would need a savior even before He spoke the earth into existence! Wow!

Do we grasp His grace? We must understand that we are nothing in God’s economy. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, tells us that in our flesh dwells no good thing and that there are none that are righteous. Isaiah tells us that our righteousness is like filthy rags and Jeremiah tells us our hearts are deceitfully wicked and only God can know them. Yet, Psalm 103 tells us that God knows our frame and remembers we are “but dust”.

And yet...

God continues to bless those who believe on Jesus by faith despite our hearts, our actions or our faithfulness to obeying His commands. Is this cheap grace? No...it’s ultimately expensive love – it cost our Father in Heaven His only Son’s life: Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for us that we might be the righteousness of God in Him. Thank you, Lord!

Pray with me that we see the depth of the riches of God through Jesus...

A Little Perspective on the 'Persecution' of Christians in America

[excerpted from Robert King's commentary in the Indianapolis Star...]

"In my travels as both a churchgoer and a journalist I have on occasion heard Christian leaders, usually evangelicals, lament the persecution that Christians face here in America.

Really.

Usually, the reference is in regard to cultural ridicule during a Saturday Night Live skit or a new movie with a provocative theme (i.e. The Da Vinci Code), a perception that the media and the government are set against Christian principles (most often seen in church and state issues) or the idea that society in general has an anti-Christian attitude.

In some instances, there may be some truth there...."

IndyChristian Ed. Note: I'm reminded of the sentence following Galatians 5:22, the well-known verse re the fruits of the Spirit. "Against such things there is no law." So despite whatever else you may or may not believe about bias 'against' Christianity in politics, etc... still there is nothing to keep any of us from simply being Christ-like and redemptive agents in our community.

Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For he "has put everything under his feet." Nowwhen it says that "everything" has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ. When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

The Harvest is Ready--could use your prayers and support

I am just back from Kenya and suffering from jet lag still. The trip was an amazing success. I trained about 100 pastors all over the country on evangelism, leadership, marriage, parenting, church planting, discipleship, and most importantly--kingdom expansion.

What is woefully apparent from getting on the ground and sharing with folks who have a passion to serve, yet fail to see the fruit in their efforts, is how misguided the church has become through the ages when it comes to NT church practice. For example, the Great Commission has changed from "make disciples, baptizing them, teaching them to obey all my commands" to "make converts through a simple prayer or even the raising of a hand." We have replaced "if you love me you will obey my commands" (John 14:15, 14:21) and "No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has seen him or knows him" (1 John 3:6) with "love, grace, mercy--and even smooth roads and prosperity. What happened to "carry your cross and follow me" and "counting the cost." There is much tickling of the ears and little depth or substance anymore pouring from the air waves--their image of the American church. We teach our congregations: "if you profess Christ, attend church, and tithe--I demand no more from you." Yet, the Great Commission is to "make disciples" and "teach to obey all His commands." Where have we gone wrong? One local man told me "you are the first white man I have ever seen teach the truth."

What is discipleship anyway? Can we really "disciple" someone by "preaching" to them 30 minutes a week? How did Jesus do it? And even Paul? They walked with those they discipled. Can we really disciple hundreds, if not thousands? Jesus simply took on 12 people, and one still fell away. Why do we suppose we can handle more than Him? Paul likewise invested in a few (2 Tim 2:2). Can a lecture style setup really make disciples? What about 1 Corinthians 14:26--anything but a lecture.

Not all traditions are bad--yet many prove only marginally effective. I have brought teachings of NT practices to Kenya. I opened my teaching with this statement: "if you don't see what I teach in the Word, ignore it." The Word is sufficient. Yes, what I shared looked like new wine--however, it is not. It is simply the NT wine pulled off the shelf and put back into practice.

I am very encouraged by the multitudes of folks God is bringing back to the simplicity of NT practices. Traditions are being shed, and the Kingdom is expanding. You see, mammon and tradition have crept into the church. Men have created their kingdoms at the expense of "the Kingdom." Many now want to see the Kingdom expand--that is church multiplication and the making of disciples.

Many say the soil is hard in their field--that the harvest just is not ready. Yet Jesus spoke of a different problem. He said the harvest is ready, but the workers are few. Well, God has asked me and my family to labor in the harvest of Kenya. We are, right now, selling everything that doesn't fit in a suitcase and relocating our 6 (soon 7) children to the bush in Kenya. The harvest is indeed ready--but not just Kenya. It's ready wherever you are--for those who are ready to embrace God's Kingdom at the expense of their own. God wants those willing to put Him first in everything (1 John 2:15-17).

Now I have a personal request: please pray for my family and ministry. Also, consider supporting us. Not just sending funds--but rather by purchasing our products. I share in Paul's boast that I have always self-funded my ministry and have never taken a salary. That will prove more difficult in a poverty-stricken environment. So I ask that you consider doing what you can to help--while at the same time blessing yourself and your congregations.

My recently released book is designed to mobilize the saints to fruitfulness (www.valuesdrivenlife.com). I have offered an e-copy for free for a while now. I urge you to purchase one for your library and for those you disciple. Every copy you purchase puts $5 in the coffers for our work in Kenya. We also have other reources such as audio seminars, parenting resources, and even natural health products at www.valuesdrivenfamily.com. Please help us in this way. And spread the word about our materials if they have blessed you and yours.

Another way to support our work is to provide opportunities to speak at your churches. I am available to do anything from Sunday sermons to extended evening and weekend workshops anywhere in the greater Indianapolis area. A modest honorarium or offering would be appreciated and a table to display my products is all I ask. A blessing to you and support for us.

Lastly, a fine way to support us is to buy our stuff--that is our household items. We are literally selling EVERYTHING on Craig's List. Email me at marc.carrier@valuesdrivenfamily.com for directions to see what we have.

God bless you all,

Marc Carrier

God's Word

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-- it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
