God's Word

And live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

[.pdf version of his report]

Today's 'Featured City' Call... Sarasota/Bradenton

[quoting from PrayerSummits.Net]

About This Month's Call (Sarasota/Bradenton, Florida):

"Either the Lord is up to something in this area, or I am certifiably insane." This is the comment of one of the leaders who is now living in "Manasota" (that is a combined version of two West Florida counties – Manatee and Sarasota). In the last few years, many spiritual leaders have felt God's direct call to move to this area because God wanted them to be involved in His work there. This call will feature some of what God has done in this area through the Global day of Prayer and other initiatives.

You are welcome to join us (TODAY)... Tuesday, February 27 (12:00 Eastern Time). [Click for call numbers and more details.]

God's Word

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodn ess, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God's Word

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

Flee from Temptation

by Pastor Jim Brown

Horizon Christian Fellowship

Judges 16:1 Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.

============

Samson saw a harlot (that he desired) and went in unto her. We see here that Sampson made an error in judgment in Judges chapter 16; he experienced a temptation and instead of walking (or running like Joseph – Gen 39:12) away from it, he gave in to it and committed sin.

Temptation is not sin: temptation is the draw of sin in our lives by our lusts. We must, as Christians, avoid sin and the temptation that entices us to sin for we are “but flesh” and weak and therefore we must know that we are not as “strong” as we would like others to think. We must walk in the Spirit and under His leading – seeking to please God and not ourselves. Sampson, it appears, wasn’t able to do this.

Can we? Are we any stronger or more “spiritual” or better than Sampson? Do any of us need the blood of Christ any less than anyone else?

Although the Bible tells us that all who name the name of Christ should depart from iniquity we must also know that when we see our brother in a fault we are to seek to restore him/her...not beat them down or shun them. We are to come along side of them (in meekness and humility considering ourselves lest we be tempted – Gal 6:1) and build them up in love – the love that Jesus has for us.

For all of us who are sinners (I’m guessing that’s all of us) Paul has encouragement for us from 1Cor 10:13...God (who IS faithful) will make a way for us to escape temptation. Our job is to simply take “that” way – the narrow way, the Jesus way, the ONLY way. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life, and no man comes to the Father but by me”.

Pray with me that we can focus our lives on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith...

Tony Dungy.... Faith, Family and Football

by Tia Nielsen, Indy's Child Magazine

This is a tale of Tony Dungy, two cities, four men, and big dreams.

As head football coach for the Indianapolis Colts, Dungy is well known for his passion and commitment to excellence. January is a big month for NFL coaches. It is the road to the Super Bowl. "Certainly, I like to win," says Dungy. "I want to bring a Super Bowl to Indy." He also has a dream that extends beyond the years of success in the pro-football world.

"Seek God For The City"... 40 Days of Prayer

God's Word

But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Daniel Bernard, City Impact... Next Steps for Indy?

This week the citywide initiative called Faith Hope & Love is conducting their annual winter event “Power in Community Conference”.

Near the conclusion of this 4-day event, a very important segment is being held Friday morning, Feb. 23rd... 9 a.m.... called “City Impact".

Dr. Daniel Bernard

The leader of this key segment is Dr Daniel Bernard, Founder of Somebody Cares Tampa Bay and the author of 4 books, including 'City Impact'. He will speak to Pastors and Leaders on the power of partnership between churches and local businesses in addressing the needs of the community.

Dr. Bernard appeared on the 700 Club and has been featured in Outreach Magazine. He is a member of the Global Learning Community... a cutting edge think-tank of Christian city leaders from around the world. Dr. Bernard will help us focus on such issues as...

  • 80 ways to unify our community
  • How deeds of kindness can impact our city
  • How our local businesses can impact our communities

We have also now specially arranged for this morning session to be followed by a roundtable discussion over (pizza) lunch... "Tangible Next Steps For Indy".

The luncheon's interactive objective will be for all participants to then know 'how, where and when' each of us can help move Indy's citywide impact to the next level during 2007... and beyond.

The $10 cost of this segment includes lunch. Participants are encouraged to register in advance, at FHLcommunity.org. Or you may also register at the door.

Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. But cleave unto the LORD your God

by Pastor Jim Brown

Horizon Christian Fellowship

Numbers 16:8-9 And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi: 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?
============

Sometimes it seems as though we are defeated before we get out of bed...the cares of life, kids, job, etc. get us down and out.

Sometimes...even getting out of bed is more than we can handle but – God is with you!

We must know that one person + God is a majority and following this thought, if God is with us, who can come against us?

So...if the giants are against us before we even get out of bed we need to ask for a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit and for the courage that can only come from God and stand up and follow after HIM! It takes courage to walk after God at times – the world will so often ridicule us or beat us down for our stance on the issues of life. God, however, knows what you and I are going through and tells us to simply cleave to Him – draw near to Him – Jesus would say, “Abide in Him” and the cares of the day become His cares and not ours...

Come unto me all you who are weary and heavily burdened and I will give you rest...that’s the promise that Jesus makes to us if we have the courage to come to Him!

Pray with me that our hearts desire to walk in obedience to our Creator and the lover of our souls...

"10 Things You Could Do Too."

Wish you could help transform a community? You can. With the power of the Holy Spirit, everyone can do something to change the world. And your efforts of faith are multiplied if they help leverage the collective Church impact in your city. We call it 'fishing our city together with a net'.

  • Community Prayer: Here's what one pastor wrote... "Living In A Prayed-For Community". You can pray and encourage others to pray for their neighbors and the community, its leaders, teachers, pastors, and other civic heroes. In our community, we spread the word that the local Friday siren was a great time to stop a few minutes especially to pray for the community. And we let our civic leaders know it was also a signal to remind them they're being prayed-for regularly.

As you look for opportunities for change, consider the tech capabilities now being put in the hands of everyday users like yourself, making it easy to create impact in just a few minutes per day. It's as easy as email !

God's Word

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightenedup and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."

God's Word

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.

God's Word

Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near. Don't grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Answers Magazine: "Trading Truth for Tolerance?"

'Trading Truth for Tolerance'
by Dr. A. Charles Ware, Pres.
Crossroads Bible College

Published in 'Answers' Magazine, February 2007
"Building A Biblical Worldview"

The cultural divide in America concerning the family, especially in the area of marriage, is growing. Hollywood films and other media have launched an aggressive campaign to normalize same-sex relationships. TV shows like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and movies like Brokeback Mountain affirm same-sex relationships, while openly gay TV show hosts like Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres humor our nation. Educational institutions, in the name of tolerance, seek to legitimize these relationships, and our courts and even churches wrestle with the issue.

Evangelists retreat to the high seas... or the hills?

Here are some pics from this past weekend's evangelism retreat. Was it held on the high seas, or in the hills? You decide.

Either way, it was great. A very special thanks goes out to Mike Porter and Randy Calhoun (and no doubt many others) for pulling this together. And we were all thankful for key speakers such as Jose Muniz (Ya gotta see his pic **LOL**. He's a trip.), not to mention Marv Plementosh, Ray Walters and Steve Spidel.

Who knows what God might have in mind by pulling 50 evangelistic types together from around the state (and beyond)??? Stay tuned.

In the meantime, mark your calendars for March 18th, when evangelist Mark Cahill comes to Indy. No doubt many of these (hardly) retreating-evangelists will also be gathering there as well. Bring your vision for change in our city, and come be a part of the cityreaching movement.

If anyone is going to be effective in the 'Indy 400'... I'm guessing it'll be many of these types of folks !

God's Word

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.

God's Word

Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why, you do not even know what will happentomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."
James 4:13-15

God's Word

For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"

Colts' coach more proud of Christ than 'blackness'

Super Bowl XLI had been hyped as a major social milestone in U.S. history, since for the time, the head coaches of both teams were black.

But when the game was over and the Indianapolis Colts had defeated the Chicago Bears 29-17, the winning coach said Jesus Christ was more important than any racial moment.

During the nationally televised post-game show on CBS, coach Tony Dungy was asked specifically about the "social significance".

Tony Dungy: I'll tell you what. I'm proud to be representing African-American coaches, to be the first African-American to win this. It means an awful lot to our country. But again, more than anything, I've said it before, Lovie Smith and I, not only the first two African-Americans, but Christian coaches showing that you can win doing it the Lord's way. And we're more proud of that.

God's Word

In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Daniel 7:13-14

Colts Win !

Praise God. It was a well-played game, and coaches, players, and even the team-owner gave God praise.

Apparently nice guys CAN win. [Did we ever doubt it?]

Congrats Jim, Bill, Tony, Team & Fans!

God's Word

The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

Seemeth it but a small thing?

by Pastor Jim Brown

Horizon Christian Fellowship

Numbers 16:8-9 And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi: 9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?
============

We are all (if we are a child of God) ministers of the Most High God!

Ministering for God in Numbers 16 means to serve Him, to worship Him and to attend to Him and His desires. Contextually, God through Moses is asking the Levites (and especially Korah) if they think it is a small thing to be ministering to GOD by ministering to His people.

We are also ministers to God and to be ministers (servants) to His people...do we take this responsibility lightly? “Oh, it’s no big thing” we might say, or “I don’t really like these people but God knows my heart” might be our defense, but the reality is that we are ambassadors for Christ: We Represent Jesus Christ to the people of this world...and so the question must be to all of us – “What do the people see”?

In evaluating our lives, do the people see someone FULL of GRACE and TRUTH (John 1:17)? Do they see someone who is more interested in ministering to the hearts and lives of those around them than anything petty variance they might find disagreeable in someone. Do they see someone who continually shows Grace as they have been shown grace and extends forgiveness as they have been forgiven and who prays for people instead of judging them or being critical of them?

In Ruth 4:15 we see that the kinsman (who is a picture of our nearer and greater redeemer – Jesus) is a restorer of life and a nourisher of our old age – do we seek to share God’s love in such a way that people’s lives are restored and nourished? The minister who seeks to restore and nourish lives is the one walking in the center of God’s will – he/she is the one who is the true minister for Jesus.

What is God’s heart? His heart is about people – their hearts, their lives...their eternity!

Pray with me that our hearts see that ministry is about people and their relationship with Jesus and nothing more...

Tony, Lovie and the Super Bowl... Then What?

Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith are making history.

Each has coached his team to the verge of a world championship, something no African-American has ever done in professional football. They are old friends.

They coached together at Tampa Bay. But they also are bound together by something deeper and more profound than a love of football.

Each of them...

God's Word

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

God's Word

Know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified. For if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!
Galatians 2:16, 21b
