Dungy & Lovie -- known for their Christian testimony

MIAMI (BP)-Super Bowl XLI will feature two teams making their first super game appearance in two-plus decades, two Midwestern teams separated by only a couple hundred miles, but most importantly two coaches who are strong believers in Jesus Christ.

Head coaches Tony Dungy of Indianapolis and close friend and fellow Christian Lovie Smith of Chicago gave credit to God following their respective teams' victories in the conference championships Jan. 21.

God's Word

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

"God, why does Peyton get a better house than me?"

[IndyChristian Editor: I wouldn't normally resort to such things... LOL... but this week has to be an exception. The following story comes via email.... which I of course immediately passed along to our cityreaching friends from Chicago. **wink**]

Tom Brady, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Patriots flag in the window.

"This house is yours for eternity, Tom ," said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here." Tom felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house.

On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a 3-story mansion with a Blue & White sidewalk, a 50-foot tall flagpole with an enormous Colts logo flag, and in every window, a Colts towel.

Tom looked at God and said...
"God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was an all-pro QB too, I hold many NFL records, and I even won a few Super bowls."

God said "So what's your point Tom?"

"Well, why does Peyton get a better house than me?"

God chuckled, and said: "Tom, that's not Peyton's house, it's mine."

'Cleveland Hope'... Featured City Call Today

"Cleveland Hope” brought together congregations from across that city in a massive effort of prayer mobilization and community ministry in partnership with city government, along with evangelism and church planting efforts. How did a denominational strategy incorporate congregations from other denominations? What strategy resulted in thousands of prayer supporters from across the country? How did their "Paint the Town" initiative receive such favor from city leaders?

You can interact with people from Cleveland on this Featured Cities Conference Call.

Here are the details so you can join us on the call.

Homeless Connect... Mon. Feb. 12th

[per email from Marquisha Bridgeman, City of Indianapolis, Faith-based Coordinator]

On Monday, February 12, 2007, Indiana Convention Center, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the City of Indianapolis and the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention (CHIP) will host the second annual Indy Homeless Connect, a one day event linking those experiencing homelessness with available services. Last year’s event was an overwhelming success involving over 450 volunteers and 50 organizations. We served 900 of our homeless neighbors, providing them with medical care, mental health counseling referrals, employment guidance, and information about housing along with haircuts, book distribution and more.

There are a variety of ways to get involved...

[continued at IndyHomelessConnect.com]

P.S. Something new this year is the addition of a prayer room for our homeless neighbors or anyone who would like to pray, be prayed for, or pray for someone else. If you would like to be a part of this or want more information about the prayer room, please contact Marquisha Bridgeman.

God's Word

As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his daysare like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD's love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children's children - with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.

'So You Wanna Be In Pictures?'.... Sat. Feb.3rd

Sat. February 3rd... noon til 2pm.

Graphics artist, Ellen Spencer will be leading a special training session called "So You Wanna Be In Pictures?".

It's about... well... EVERYTHING to do with taking digital photos, editing them, uploading to the web so you can share them... and how then to share them online with your friend & neighbors.

You've seen and heard about 'Flickr'... Yahoo's new photo site... and perhaps you've wondered if anyone could help you be able to participate there? Saturday's your day. We'd love to help create a whole cadre of e-capable Christians who not only know how to do these things, but know why it's important that we collaborate to use them for the Lord here in our city.

Be with us at the cafe on Saturday. No cost for the training. [Buying your breakfast at the cafe will help the ministry there!]

See you then!

God's Word

If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Colts testify... Prayer works

[Great article by Robert King, Indianapolis Star]

Peyton Manning said he wasn't sure whether it was right to pray for help during the tense final moments of the Colts' victory Sunday night.

But plenty of other people around Manning think he shouldn't have even hesitated.
Colts center Jeff Saturday, who spends most of the game just a fanny pat away from Manning, said he prayed during the entire AFC Championship Game.

Coach Tony Dungy said he, too, prayed throughout that desperate struggle that the Patriots wouldn't be dancing at the end of the day. "I said, 'Lord, don't let these guys celebrate on our field,' " he said.

And Colts chaplain Ken Johnson, known for getting on his knees to seek God's game-day favor, said...

Will There Be An 'Indianapolis' Section of Heaven?

Commentary, by Neil Cox, Editor, IndyChristian.com

What a great story. And what an epic clash in the offing.

An epic clash to be sure... between two Christian coaches... with God teetering on the 50-yard line... obviously having to soon choose sides... right?

But how about the epic clash brewing in my own conscience?

After all, we raised our sons in Illinois to be lifelong, die-hard Cub fans, Bears fans, Bulls fans, Blackhawks, Illini... and so on down the line. Yet now our sons are grown and we find ourselves living in Indianapolis and embracing the Colts, Pacers, (BobbyKnightlessPTL) Hoosiers, Boilermakers... and every other Indiana team (well, nearly. Go WPND!).

So what's a father to do in such cases?

Especially now that both these coaches are solid professing believers. What will heaven be like when we're confronted for all eternity with these two dear brothers... having chosen one over the other?

It got me to thinking. We all know that there apparently will be a Baptist section of heaven, a Presbyterian section, a Pentecostal section, and as some might admit it, even a Catholic section. But will there be an Indianapolis section? A Chicago section?

Piper: "When Is Abortion Racism?"

Dr. John Piper

"For the sake of full disclosure let me tell you one of my main aims in this message: In the name of Jesus Christ and rooted in the gospel of his death and resurrection for sinners (including abortionists and pastors), my aim is to stigmatize abortion by associating it with racism. I would like you to link abortion and race the same way you link lynching and race."

Abortion and Racism

My aim is that those who abhor racism will abhor abortion—“Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good” (Romans 12:9). My aim is that abortion would be as culturally taboo as racism is. My aim is to hasten the day when being publicly pro-choice will be as reprehensible as being publicly racist. My aim is to hasten the day when declaring yourself pro-choice would be like declaring yourself a white supremacist.

My aim is that just as once even though the Supreme Court in the Dred Scott case of 1857 held that Black slaves were property without rights as free persons, yet today we view that as unthinkable; so also even..."

Barna Survey Explores Evangelicals

January 18, 2007 (Ventura, CA) - The media and social commentators frequently refer to surveys that describe the opinions and behavior of "evangelicals." However, those analyses are based on surveys that ask adults whether or not they consider themselves to be an evangelical.

For two decades, The Barna Group has been measuring the social, political, religious and behavioral characteristics of evangelicals as well - but using a substantially different set of criteria. The Barna Group’s nine questions pertaining to the spiritual beliefs of people have reported on a very different - and much smaller - group of people.

To distinguish them from the self-described evangelicals, Barna has named the segment based on its answers to nine theological factors the "9-point evangelicals." ...

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. God's Word

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

God's Word

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world - the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does - comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

A world record for meetings?

Is God working in a special way in our city these days?

Judging from yesterday's plethora of collaborative meetings for pastors and other driven Christians, we might have to conclude that 'something is in the wind'. No less than 5 (unrelated) collaborative ministry gatherings happened yesterday here as we head into the new year together.

Actually, six, if you count the doubly-collaborative luncheon of Transform Indiana and the Reformation Society of Indiana.

Earlier in the day, CBMC and FHL (Faith Hope & Love) pulled some business men & women together to discuss forming a Bible-study downtown outreach.

Both of the above meetings (breakfast & lunch) were kindly hosted at Shepherd Community's new facilities. [Thank you Jay & Steve!]

Between these meetings, I visited a community-focused meeting over in the Martindale-Brightwood area... as some key pastors and ministry workers seek to be salt & light in their neighborhoods.

Yet another group of pastors then got together to fellowship and get 'outside their box'. Among them, for instance, was Pastor Fredrick Boyd, Jr. -- pastor of Zion Unity Missionary Baptist Church... a key leader in the upcoming Creation Evidence Crusade for 2007. [Btw, the CEC-planning group is holding a key meeting of their own this Thursday evening, 7pm at Zion Unity. If you'd like to be part of such an effort... get in touch for further details!]

And lastly, yesterday happened to be the monthly meeting of our Hispanic pastors -- this time specially meeting at Community of One (Pastor Andy Hunt), and discussing the upcoming citywide Faith Hope & Love initiative.

And these were just the meetings we KNEW about. [If you know of other Bible-believing collaborations of pastors and other driven Christians here in the metro area... we'd like to connect. Drop us a line.]

Btw, the above photos are included in an IndyChristian collection at Flickr. If you'd like to learn more about digital photography and uploading to the web... there's another 'meeting' just for you... Feb. 3rd... at the Unleavened Bread Cafe... hosted by the TechMission program there. Come join us!

Ok... now off to Muncie this morning... as pastors/leaders are hooking up statewide.

In addition to a record seven USAC National midget titles, Kenyon also was runner-up eight times. He participated in the Indianapolis 500 eight times, placing third in 1968 -- behind Bobby Unser and Dan Gurney -- plus fourth in 1969 and 1973, and fifth in 1966.

Amazing Grace Sunday, February 18, 2007

Movie: Amazing Grace to be released - February 18, 2007

On Sunday, February 18, I invite you to join churches around the globe in singing the treasured hymn, Amazing Grace. The significance of this occasion is to commemorate the work of William Wilberforce, a courageous evangelical who two-hundred years ago faced down the powerful men of his day to facilitate the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire. His mentor was John Newton, the slave-trader-turned-song-writer, whose words influenced Wilberforce, and continue to resonate today in the lyrics of Amazing Grace.

Today the fight to end slavery continues. It's estimated that 27 million people are currently in slavery around the world. From forced child labor to bonded labor and sexual servitude, millions are suffering and need evangelicals to speak out on their behalf. On February 18, Amazing Grace Sunday is a wonderful opportunity for the church to make our voice heard.

We ask that you set aside a few moments of your worship service on February 18 to sing Amazing Grace and to commit yourselves once again to speak for the oppressed. The Amazing Grace Sunday website (www.amazinggracesunday.com) offers several valuable resources including an opportunity to register your participation, lyrics to a new arrangement of the hymn by Christian artist Chris Tomlin and bulletin inserts about the hymn, which you are free to download and print for your congregation.

In addition, a major motion picture, with the same title as the hymn Amazing Grace, (www.amazinggracemovie.com) about the work of William Wilberforce will open in theaters across the country on February 23. You can also learn more about the fight to end modern day slavery at the partner campaign, Amazing Change (www.theamazingchange.com). The World Evangelical Alliance has also provided resources for churches. We encourage you to make use of these wonderful resources.

We look forward to your participation and show of solidarity on February 18 and in the days of work ahead. The NAE has been recognized by the “abolition movement” of today as one organization, through our Office of Governmental Affairs, that has been a premier leader in passing anti-trafficking legislation. We believe your involvement in this effort is a signal of NAE’s continuing commitment to the fight to end modern-day slavery

Leith

Mmoja Ajabu didn't always embrace the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s philosophy that protest should be peaceful.

When he led the Black Panther Militia in Indiana, Ajabu specifically left open the possibility that armed conflict might be the answer to black oppression.

When he wanted to bring attention to his concerns about a black man's impending execution, he burned an American flag on Monument Circle.

When his son was being prosecuted for a triple murder in Carmel, Ajabu was ...

God's Word

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God -- this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will.

God's Word

In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.

God's Word

I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit
the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not
all sleep, but we will all be changed - in a flash, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet
will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we
will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with
the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

1 Corinthians 15:50-53
