Breaking News... [continued at Reuters]

Comment from a pro-life priest:

“Elections have consequences. The confirmation of Samuel Alito to the US Supreme Court is now an accomplished fact. This is not simply the work of the President who nominated him and the Senators who confirmed him. This is the work of the voters, who put the President and the Senators into office.”

God's Word

If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all
die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

More prayers raised after Judge's ruling...

Russ Pulliam, IndyStar

If federal Judge David Hamilton ever wanted to play the part of a double agent in a Hollywood movie, he might do well at it.

The judge banned official prayers in the name of Jesus Christ in the state House of Representatives last year. Now a new wave of prayer has been generated in and around the Statehouse.

Emergent Help Needed
There is an older couple from Bosnia( 70 and 65) who have been brought to the USA by thier daughter, who is a US citizen, to escape the conditions left by the war in Bosnia. They have "nothing but each other". The daughter is looking for reasonable housing for her parents and a part time job for her mother. Her father is unable to work because of his many medical conditions. The daughter is working at a local state ran establishment for wayward teenage girls but the added expense of her parents is taking its toll and she has a baby on the way which is adding an additioanl stress, while being a welcome one. Abortion bill defines start of life

Concept is it, doctors would have to tell women.

Impacting the Community for Christ

[Excellent article by James Patterson, Indiana Christian News]

At least one Indianapolis church is putting into practice a belief that the key to winning souls involves putting as much emphasis on meeting their physical needs as spiritual. Body of Christ Community Church on the city’s Northside recently bought and began renovating a building at 1919 E. 52nd Street.

Rev. Andrew Hunt, III

It’s a non-denominational reformed church. By design, the congregation has been interracial from its beginning in 1999. Three organizations under the church’s purview all operate under one roof. This includes the congregation, whose pastor is Rev. Andrew Hunt III; Community of One Community Development Corporation, a non-profit, faith-based program; and an a racial reconciliation and spiritual retreat ministry called New Hope Great Banquet.

'BLOGGING FOR EVANGELISM'

A blog is probably the easiest type of website to set up, and requires no technical knowledge at all. [link to article at Pastors.com]

Although there are thousands of Christian blog sites, virtually all of them have been written for other Christians. Yet there is enormous potential to use blogs to reach non-Christians. Check the new 'Internet Evangelism Day' resource page to learn how. [link to article at Web-Evangelism.com]

We believe there is great potential for sharing faith through blogs, yet very few are doing it.

God's Word

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

NBC pulls plug on 'Book of Daniel'

NBC's "The Book of Daniel" may have launched to great controversy and hoopla. But, today, the show ended with a whimper – pulled unceremoniously from NBC's Friday night schedule, effective immediately, with no more of an announcement than an entry on an NBC blog by creator Jack Kenny.

"Unfortunately, due to many reasons, 'The Book of Daniel' will no longer be aired on NBC on Friday nights," he wrote to fans. "I just wanted to say 'thank you' to all of you who supported the show. There were many wonderful, talented people who contributed to its success – and I do mean success. Whatever the outcome, I feel that I accomplished what I set out to do: A solid family drama...

Indy Heights Community Church (ModelChurch.com)

"What Would a Model Church Look Like?"

If 'the Church' is the people, not just a picture of them when they're together on Sunday morning, then perhaps we should all start thinking less about a church web-SITE... and more about a Church web-TAPESTRY. That is, a whole network of sites in the church's local community.

Church-leaders are often asking us these days how to start building out a free, easy, team-oriented set of highly-functional websites. So we've started fleshing-out that question, starting with a 'model church' website for discussion.... We call it "Model Church.com". From there we'll be linking off to sites of our people in that neighborhood or community.

In fact, it's more than that -- you might say we're using the internet to centrally sketch out a model of some basics that reflect what ANY LOCAL CHURCH might start looking like in reality... given the increasingly 'connected' nature of the local Church body.

We're going calling our model church... "Indy Heights Community Church"... a fictitious church in a fictitious neighborhood community.

We welcome your comments or email.

God's Word

In the last days the mountain of the LORD's temple will be established as chief among the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it. Many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He
will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths." The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

God's Word

Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Storefront churches...

"There are no sounding bells, stained-glass windows or soaring steeples at the Spiritual Awakening Tabernacle Church in the Near-Northside's Mapleton Fall Creek neighborhood. The congregation of 35, instead, worships within 1,200 square feet of leased space in a former doctor's office that has chipped paint, rotting wood and creaky stairs."

"Just around the corner is Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, with about 600 members and a 132-room behemoth limestone building that mimics 15th-century Gothic architecture.
Close in proximity, the two congregations are at opposite ends of a spectrum of evolution for houses of God..."

Can we handle this?

I regret being so slow to find any news from this protest in Washington, D.C. in December. Apparently the mainstream media didn't pick up the story. Only the internet seemed to carry it, and then only from the perspective of the protesters.

Dr. John Perkins is led away by police.

"115 religious leaders were arrested in front of the Cannon House Office Building while kneeling in prayer to protest the immoral budget and tax agenda which slashes spending on the poor to finance tax breaks for the rich. Led by Jim Wallis of Call to Renewal, national faith leaders, clergy and faith-based providers of services to the poor held a press conference."

Reverend Jim Wallis

[Jim Wallis' article and set of pictures]

What shall we make of all this? Seeing our beloved Dr. Perkins in handcuffs should not surprise us. He has always tried to be seen standing with the poor. Reverend Jim Wallis being led away in handcuffs? No surprise either, if you've read his book, "God's Politics".

It all begs the question for the Church at large though -- can we handle this? Can we handle political dissent among Bible-believing Christ-followers?

Networking mentors.... to change lives & communities

"American children are more likely to be murdered, poor, pregnant, drug-dependent or incarcerated than the children of any other industrialized country."

Tuesday's special speaker at the Transform Indiana ministry network (of networks), was Dr. Virgil Gulker, Founder of Kids Hope, USA. We learned of their ministry via our Transform Indiana connection in Grant County (Marion, Indiana)... Jack Brady, a CBMC leader in the city, who also serves on the Advisory Commission for the Governor's Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives.

Some background on how/why the topic was vitally important...

Pastor James Carter... outreach director for our host church today, Oasis of Hope Baptist Church... updated everyone regarding our vision to help recruit 1,000 mentors among the various mentoring programs for the inner-city here in Indianapolis.

"Invest now, rather than pay later." The costs of losing these at-risk kids can be as high as $60,000 per year for kids dropping out of school, and almost certainly finding their way into jail."

IUPUI is hosting a Darwin’s Day Conference on March 4, 2006. The conference is free for students and teachers. For individuals who do not fall into either of these categories the cost is 30.00 dollars. They also suggest that you prepay for a 8.00 dollar lunch as there are no eateries close by and the program schedule will be full. I believe this will be a great opportunity for us to hear from some of the best proponents of evolution in order to better equip our students against one of the most unscientific ideas being promoted by colleges and universities today.

The conference will address issues like:

The Evolution Intelligent Design debate
The scientific method and critical thinking
The history of the evolution controversy
The evidence for evolution

Call for National Boycott...

OLYMPIA, WA -- A pastor has called for a national boycott of Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and other companies that have come out in support of a gay civil rights bill, saying Monday that the companies have underestimated the power of religious consumers.

The Rev. Ken Hutcherson, pastor of Antioch Bible Church in Redmond -- also home to Microsoft -- said he would officially be making the call for the boycott Thursday on a national conservative talk radio show, Focus on the Family.

"Faith, Hope & Love" ...nationwide?

Ed. Note: We obtained a copy of the following letter to Mr. Jim Towey, the national director for the president's "Office for Faith-based and Community Initiatives". In the letter, the "Faith Hope & Love" Director, Pastor Merlin Gonzales, makes the case for this becoming a national initiative. Interesting concept...

Office of the Faith Based and Community Initiatives
Asst. to President OFBCI
Washington, DC

Mr. Jim Towey,

I am excited to invite you to be a part of something very special in our communities.

Faith, Hope and Love (FHL) is a national non profit organization based in Indianapolis that facilitates active participation of all sectors of local communities in improving neighborhoods and helping those in need. Government entities, educational institutions, faith-based organizations and businesses are participating in a joint effort to bridge social, economic and spiritual gaps in our community.

It is the one of few organizations that gives people a way to make a dramatic difference in their own community and with their neighbors. It brings together like-minded individuals from all walks of life to link arms with one another and get involved...

God's Word

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother" - which is the first commandment with a promise - "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

One week in December-FHL's 3rd Gulf Trip

Here's an account of one of the FHL missionaries to Louisiana:
Determined to go someplace warmer for the Christmas holidays, I joined FHL’s disaster relief task force on a mission to aid Katrina victims in Louisiana. In New Orleans, we helped serve a meal and bag groceries and other essentials for individuals without work and living in damaged housing. Payments from insurance have commonly been delayed and, in many cases the amount is inadequate to make the required repairs. Many, many people are still living in absolutely unlivable conditions. We did some painting and insulating for two families, one of which had spent their time transporting volunteers to more severely damaged homes, and we re-roofed the home of a woman with no insurance and cleaned more debris. Even as we heard the stories and saw the destruction first-hand, feelings of gratefulness to God filtered throughout their stories.
It seems to me that God is a master multi-tasker. He has many agendas on different levels in different areas, performed through a variety of people. Yeast is scattered and kneaded violently through the dough; seeds are planted, taking root over time as the ground is tended, and suddenly seem to sprout overnight. Another gardener will shelter and protect our young plants; another baker will take a bit of the yeasty dough, mix it with flour and make another loaf of bread as the yeast continues to grow. But above and beyond the growth of seedlings and yeast, the farmer and the baker learn and grow, and eventually even receive blessings back from maturing trees and baked bread. So do we, as we cooperate with His plan. How wonderful it is to be a servant of our Lord!

Commentary: Martin Luther King Jr... and Truth

Charles Colson, Breakpoint Commentary

King's Dream: The Good Society and the Moral Law

More than forty years ago, on August 28, 1963, a quarter million people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial. They marched here for the cause of civil rights. And that day they heard Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, a speech in which he challenged America to fulfill her promise.

“I have a dream,” he said, “that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.”

While we know of the speech, most people are unaware that King also penned one of the most eloquent defenses of... [continued at Breakpoint]

Martin Luther King Day...

[From Christianity Today Magazine]

"We must keep God in the forefront. Let us be Christian in all our actions." So spoke the newly elected president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, which had just been organized to lead a bus boycott to protest segregated seating in the city buses. The president, and new pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist, went on to say that blacks must not hate their white opponents. "Love is one of the pinnacle parts of the Christian faith. There is another side called justice, and justice is really love in calculation."

And so began his public role in the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The movement produced scores of men and women who risked their lives to secure a more just and inclusive society, but the name Martin Luther King, Jr, stands out among them all. As historian Mark Noll put it, "He was beyond question the most important Christian voice in the most important social protest movement after World War II."

GO Ministries: Reach Your Neighbors for Christ

We would like to invite you to attend an informational meeting for GO ministries on Thursday, January 19th at 7p in the Community Room at East 91st Street Christian Church (www.east91st.org)

God began stirring in my heart last fall that the body of Christ was not making a significant impact on our world. There was a pull on my heart saying “We have to do something more. I have to do something more, but what and how?” He put on my heart a vision for a ministry of prayer/fasting, service, and brokenness for the lost. Last year when I heard Dr. Bruce Wilkinson speak of True Fasting from this passage in Isaiah the call became clear.

"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe him,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?” Isaiah 58:6-7

Our Mission
To bridge the gap between our neighborhoods and the Church body by creating and implementing a systematic approach to relational and service evangelism.

Why
People are lost. They don’t know they’re lost. There is a breakdown in the moral structures of family and community in our neighborhoods across America. There is a disconnect between the community and the church bodies that surround them. Jesus has called us to go to seek and save the lost. Imagine what your neighborhood would be like if everyone in it was loving and serving Christ. It all starts with you!

We hope that you will prayerfully consider attending this meeting to discover more of what God has in store for us as the Body of Christ coming together from several local congregations* to reach out to the lost and hurting in our neighborhoods.

Yours in Christ,

Melissa Kandel
North Indy regional coordinator

Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, "How can I help?" (The Message) Romans 15:2

In NO GOD they trust

[Excerpts from an excellent article by Robert King, IndyStar.]

"In a state where lawmakers pray to Jesus before doing business, Reba Boyd Wooden finds herself leading a group that she says frequently feels marginalized -- the nonbelievers."

"Wooden's CFI group has about 50 dues-paying members ..."

"But building a community of humanists, atheists and agnostics isn't easy, she said. "They are all independent. They want to go in different directions. A lot of them are really kind of loners and are happy being loners," Wooden said. "A lot of people don't want to get involved in an organization." "

"We will have a theocracy in the United States, except it will be a Christian theocracy instead of a Muslim theocracy like in Iran," Jones said. "We will have our version of the ayatollah, be it Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson or those of their ilk."

"Holding such views has consequences."

Daniel Bernard to speak to Christian business leaders

Our city-reaching partner from 'Somebody Cares Tampa Bay', Pastor Daniel Bernard, author of "City Impact", will be with us here in Indy, February 3rd & 4th for a number of key meetings & activities among key leaders in the city. One such event is a luncheon with the Christian business leaders.... [Limited number of invitations -- click for further details]

[Also see the COMPLETE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS re Daniel Bernard's visit to Indy.]

TI meeting Tues noon, Jan 17th, at Oasis of Hope

Greetings

Our first Transform Indiana meeting of the New Year will be next Tuesday, January 17, from 12noon – 2pm at Oasis of Hope Baptist Church, 1701 East 25th Street. It's easy to get to from I-70 & Keystone. Their number is 317-925-6970, if you get lost.

Our focus will be on Mentoring Young People. We’ll bring you up to date on the 1000 Mentors program, and we will have, as our special guest speaker, the Founder of Kids Hope USA, Virgil Gulker. His bio is attached.

This quote is from a businessman who has been a KIDS HOPE USA mentor for 11 years:
“There are lots of people like me, Christians who want to make a difference in the life of a child. Give us a time and a place and we’ll be there.”

Lots and lots of Christian men and women want to love a child but they just don’t know how to make the connection. KIDS HOPE USA provides that connection.

Come next Tuesday to find out how you, or someone you know, can make a difference in the life of a child. Dr Perkins told us the answers to the problems that plague our communities are about the family. “Fix the family, and you fix a whole lot of problems.” Mentoring is one part of the family-fixing process.

As always, it’s BYOL... Bring Your Own Lunch!

Blessings

The Judicial Scene is set for Controntation!

WASHINGTON -- As he faced the Senate Judiciary Committee Monday, Judge Samuel Alito began his Supreme Court confirmation hearings with a bit of a deficit.

He's not as naturally charming as Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., who was confirmed in September. And he didn't quite wow senators during his round of private meetings the way Roberts did. Roberts, of course, picked up 22 Democratic votes for his confirmation, a fact that infuriated liberal interest groups and could work to Alito's disadvantage.

Now the message from those activists to Democrats, said Rutgers political scientist Ross Baker, is: "You owe us.'' Read Much More!

"I watched the Book of Daniel show on NBC tonight just so I could see if it was as bad as you said. Mr. Wildmon you have it wrong - it was worse than you described. The so called pastor takes drugs, smokes, drinks, takes the Lord's name in vain. He supports homosexuality and drug use. He broke the law by giving out prescription drugs to a Bishop. Two Bishops were committing adultery. They mis-quoted the Bible. The program portrayed our Savior in a joking way. There was a corrupt Catholic priest. The maid smokes pot. The Bishop drinks, the pastor's wife is a drunk and her sister is a lesbian and the son is a homosexual. One son sleeps around. I found this program very offensive to my Christian beliefs. They were poking fun at our Savior."

OFBCI... Simple, Honest Help for Seniors

Tom Walker, Indiana National Day of Prayer

As a member of the Council of Advisors for the Governor's Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives (OFBCI), I wanted the pastors, the congregations of Indiana and particularly the senior population to be aware of opportunity described in the letter below written by John F. Rentsch who is the VISTA Faith-Based Program Assistant for the OFBCI....

Dear Friends:
Greetings from the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives! We hope that 2005 ended well for you all and that 2006 is off to a great start. I wanted to write you all today to inform you about an opportunity for congregations and other faith-based organizations in the Central Indiana area to provide a service for Medicare beneficiaries in their respective communities.
Governor Daniels and the State of Indiana understand the plight of Medicare beneficiaries who are trying to make a decision regarding the new prescription drug benefit, Medicare Part D. With 43 different plans in the State and every insurance company trying to sell their own plans, it is difficult to make a decision. For this reason, the Governor and several state agencies have launched the “Simple, Honest Help” campaign, so called because we are representatives from the State of Indiana and, unlike the insurance companies, we’re not trying to sell our product. We have been all over the State giving presentations about the new benefit, answering questions, and helping Medicare beneficiaries to enroll in a plan if they want to.
The Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (OFBCI) has taken on the task of coordinating Medicare Part D presentations that take place in congregations and other faith-based organizations throughout the State. If you are interested in having a presentation at your organization, here is what we can offer:
1) A presenter will come out to your site to give an overview of Medicare Part D, and will bring along educational materials for the audience. Allowing time for some basic questions, these presentations usually run about an hour.
2) At a later date a team of at least four trained “My Medicare Matters (MMM)” volunteers will come out to your site with laptops (with wireless, high-speed Internet access), printers, and other information, and will meet with each person individually to discuss their options, to decide which plan might work best for them (if any), and to enroll them for that plan on site if they so choose. Your site DOES NOT have to have internet access.
The initial presentations can be scheduled at any time, barring unexpected time commitments on the part of OFBCI Staff. The optimal time will be during a normally-scheduled event at your organization, such as a senior group meeting. However, the team of MMM enrollment volunteers can only be scheduled on certain dates, and require a four-hour time frame. From February until May, they will be available every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and can travel to Marion or any of the surrounding counties. There are also several dates available in January, which are filling up quickly. We are asking for a minimum audience of 15-20 Medicare beneficiaries to be present at the presentation. We encourage organizations who cannot meet this minimum to cooperate with other organizations in their area, so that we can reach as many of our Medicare beneficiaries as possible. Organizations who expect more than 50 in their audience should let us know of that as well, so that we can plan on extra staff assistance and extra educational materials.
I know that Medicare beneficiaries are being bombarded with mail, advertisements, and pressure from insurance companies to enroll in their plans. The State of Indiana is concerned that they make educated, pressure-free decisions with regard to this new benefit. If you are interested in having a Presentation/Enrollment Event at your organization, please contact me using any of the means listed below.
“Simple, Honest Help” is a collaboration of several agencies: OFBCI, Social Security Administration, Senior Health Insurance Information Program, Family and Social Services Administration, and others. Please click the links to be taken to each agency’s websites containing Medicare Part D information.
Best regards,
John F. Rentsch

"Book of Daniel"... Tonight on WTHR-TV13

WTHR-13 has been contacted for their comments or position regarding this evening's premier viewing of "The Book of Daniel". They have not returned phone calls or emails.

They have, however, run the story as 'news', as they previewed the show at (Episcopalian) Christ Church Cathedral. Here are some short excerpts...

Priest: "I don't think you can talk rationally about something if you're not even aware of what the content is."

"You had to pick someone, and I'm as happy to have it be Episcopalian as anybody. Any exposure we can get that will bring people in, is good."

Reporter: "A smile, perhaps a reserved chuckle even, was the reaction to content that many of the emails described as a mockery of Christianity. The man wearing the collar and the cross disagrees."

Priest: "I hope people will see it as entertainment. Very interesting. I'm looking forward to looking at the whole program and then seeing where it goes."

[View the whole video clip at WTHR.com.]

While Terre Haute and Little Rock affiliates have decided not to air the show, apparently WTHR-13 will be airing the show despite objections of many Christians -- so many that they set up a special voice-mailbox for your comments. What remains to be seen is which advertisers will be seen supporting the show.

Reformation Pastors... Jan.24th

[per email today - published with permission]

Dear Reformation Pastors and Church Leaders,

Please join us Tuesday, January 24, 2005 for the Reformation Society luncheon and Bible study. The luncheon will begin at 12:00 noon and end at 1:45 p.m. Our Reformation Bible study will be on Hebrews 13:20,21, with presentations by Joe Bartemus, Larry Wilson, and Dave Parry. At our January 24, meeting we will have presentations on “Biblical Benedictions: A Call for Modern Reformation.” We will meet at noon at Body of Christ Community Church, 1919 E. 52nd Street, Indianapolis, IN 46205. (two blocks west of Keystone, on the south side of 52nd street). Please bring a friend with you to this luncheon.

We look forward to this time of fellowship in the Word as we strengthen our hands for the work of the ministry entrusted to each of us. This kind of Bible study Calvin, Knox and other Reformation leaders throughout Europe believed was an essential factor in the continuing work of reformation. The Holy Spirit working through godly men brings fresh understanding. Come prepared with your own study of Romans 16:25-27, and participate in the discussion session following the speakers.

To RSVP for the luncheon please call (317) 255-7557. This will allow us to better prepare for lunch. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely in Christ,
Richard Johnston
