"Indiana Shows Stock Price Muscle"...

[Excerpted from IndyStar.com this evening...]

"Silicon Valley was still home of the best-performing stocks between 1994 and 2004. Perhaps more surprising is that Indiana was a close No. 2, behind by just 0.1 percentage point."

"Hearing that Indiana's stocks were just behind Silicon Valley's didn't surprise Nancy Brown, spokeswoman for Carmel, Ind.-based ITT Educational. She points out the Midwest's litany of business advantages: Homes are less expensive, commutes are relatively short, and many costs are lower than in the bigger metropolitan areas.
Brown says those benefits speak volumes for people who relocate."

"We've hired key senior executives the last couple of years who thought Indiana wouldn't be as exciting as the East Coast," she says. "But people who move here are pleasantly surprised and like to stay."

Faith in the Workplace...

Jackie Steuerwald

Excerpt from tv interview...

Faith in the workplace is also spreading in medium-sized firms, like Preferred Management, a home health care company in Indianapolis.

JACKIE STEUERWALD (Founder and CEO, Preferred Management) (During Monday Prayer Group): May we hide this word in our heart and not sin against you, in Jesus' name. Amen.

SEVERSON: Preferred Management has almost 200 employees, devotions every Monday, two chaplains, and reminders everywhere that this is a faith-based company. Jackie Steuerwald is the founder and CEO."

Ms. STEUERWALD: Well, I believe as Christians, our responsibility, according to the Lord, is to advance the Kingdom of God. And so we're promoting truth and righteousness. And that's everywhere we go, that's what we promote.

Developing A Biblical Worldview... This Year...

"Spiritual leaders ponder meaning of tsunami's toll"
"Was the disaster 'a wake-up call' from God, or something that 'just happened'?"
[Indianapolis Star article by Robert King.]

[Related link: Southside Bible Church]

How you answer this question depends on your 'worldview'.

"Our choices are shaped by what we believe is real and true, right and wrong, good and beautiful. Our choices are shaped by our worldview."

"Our major task in life is to discover what is true and to live in step with that truth."

"The basis for the Christian worldview, of course, is God's revelation in Scripture."

"Our calling is not only to order our own lives by divine principles but also to engage the world..." "We are to fulfill both the great commission and the cultural commission. We are commanded both to preach the Good News and to bring all things into submission to God's order, by defending and living out God's truth in the unique historical and cultural conditions of our age."

"The world is divided not so much by geographic boundaries as by religious and cultural traditions, by people's most deeply held beliefs - by worldviews."

"Renewal can occur when Christians are committed to living out their faith, seeing the world as God sees it, viewing reality through the lens of divine revelation."

Colson's books are always a solid read. This one's a classic textbook.

  • Creation: Where did we come from and who are we?
  • The Fall: What has gone wrong with the world?
  • Redemption: What can we do to fix it?
  • Restoration: How now shall we live?
***********************************************************
Pastor Mark Roberts, Christian blogger, took note of Barna Research's study showing only 4% of American's hold a 'biblical worldview', and that astoundingly only 9% of 'born-agains' hold such a view. So Mark makes the case for developing a Biblical worldview in the year ahead.

Blog, For Christ's Sake...

[Another outstanding article -- hat-tip Pastor Bill Bean]

Pastor Tod Bolsinger

"In my last post I argued that pastors, of all people, should blog because we have a vested interest in something that the blogosphere makes more readily available: To more effectively, cheaply and regularly communicate the elements of Christian faith to a wider number of people. This will also, I argued, encourage our long-term pastorates and presence in our home churches (and families) by making it easier to reach larger numbers of people each week without leaving home.

Today I want to also add that blogging allows us to be far more effective at communicating Christian truth in depth, and responding to challenges to the faith effectively, broadly and without delay. Let me highlight both briefly by focusing on two terms that Blog helps us better understand... " [continued]

Transformation Includes Saving Lives...

"From the beginning, God told Adam & Eve to be fruitful and multiply and subdue the earth... and Christ redemptively reiterated our command to be spiritually fruitful... "teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you"... which included... "I have come that you may have LIFE and have it to the full". As a result, we easily recognize that true transformation inherently includes the protection of those who can little protect themselves... including the elderly... the disabled... and all children... including unborn children." [continued at LovingChange.com]

One City, One Book? "City Impact"...

Considering that "Transform Indiana" ministry coalition leaders are now 3 years into the concept of city-reaching... and considering the many pastors & leaders we've talked with, conferences attended, books read... if you put them all together in book form... it couldn't come out as great as "City Impact", by Daniel Bernard, Executive Director of Somebody Cares Tampa Bay. ($12)

At Transform Indiana meetings, we can hope to impact a few pastors & leaders for an hour or two. But imagine the 'city impact' if we get this book out into the hands of many Christian pastors, elders and other 'driven Christians' around Indianapolis, for several hours of quiet reading and careful consideration!

Sure, buy a copy online or at a nearby Christian bookstore -- it's new, so if they don't have it, ask them to order it for you -- but then also recommend it for your favorite pastor [or better yet, buy 'em a copy]. Who knows just what God might do as a result of your actions?

Yahoo Privacy... Or Lack Thereof...

Because we've heretofore significantly enjoyed (and encouraged) the easy functionality of Yahoo mail or Yahoo egroups, we feel compelled to pass along this significant policy-change by Yahoo!.

While less scrupulous websites, viruses & adware have exploited web-tracking capabilities for years, this seems to signal the first time a major company has acknowleged using these web-tracking tactics, however well-intentioned.

"Opt-Out" is one option available to you. Filing a complaint may be another. And perhaps joining a sell-off of Yahoo stock might also send a message of non-acceptability.

In any event, please be advised: If the policy stands, we no longer encourage the use of Yahoo mail or Yahoo egroups.

Gambling's ill effects may hurt mayor's odds...

As always... Russ Pulliam is 'coming up diamonds'. Check out his article in today's Star...

Russ Pulliam, Indy Star

"Maryland has had legalized gambling for much longer than Indiana, and its attorney general, J. Joseph Curran Jr., has repeatedly warned that the costs outweigh the benefits. He points to studies by Earl Grinols, an economics professor at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champagne. Grinols estimates that casino-style gambling costs a state economy $219 per adult, compared to $46 in benefits, including tax revenue and new jobs.

"There's a downside to gambling," says Curran. "Compulsive and problem gamblers' creeping financial desperation causes much of the increased crime, while also contributing to the other social problems like family violence and child neglect, bankruptcy and homelessness and suicide."

Reminded constantly of the heroes of the party who were there for me in the past and will continue to be there for me in the future if I continue to vote the party line. 1 + 2 = VBlogging

1. Blogging as a means of ministry is becoming more and more popular.

Consider Pastor Tod Bolsinger's recent comment about pastoring and blogging: "I predict that ten years from now, church leadership boards will almost require their pastors to blog so that the ministry will be more effective and the pastor can have a bigger ministry without having to leave home to get it."

2. Video (even video distributed via the Internet) as a means of ministry is becoming more and more popular.

Consider what effect using short snippets like a music video from iTunes (courtesy of iGetMovies), a 10-minute story-sermonette from Nooma.com, these short film award finalists or the films put out by Vintage 21 could have in engaging minds and beginning a discussion.

But what if we could add #1 plus #2?

Calling In De Bunk Squad...

Here. This disproves creation.

Well, at least according to this Indianapolis Star article.

Perhaps it illustrates the irony of secular journalism: A person caught red-headed with gun in hand exiting a bank with a bagful of the bank's money is carefully referred to in print as a "suspect"... so as to not imply that he is, in fact, a bank-robber. Yet when it comes to the theory of evolution -- although only a minority of the population is convinced -- secular journalists report on evolution 'news' with a given assumption that it's no longer a theory. They now want to equate it on par with theory of gravity... no longer a debated theory... but a truism... a theorum... a fact.

Read the article and ask yourself... is the Star reporting this as an assumption of fact?

"The chimplike creature strode the Earth more than 4 million years ago, and the fossils may reveal the hominid to be the first of our ancesters to walk upright."

"A study of the Gona fossils shows that while the species, Ardipithecus ramidus, walked on two feet, above the neck they were much like chimpanzees."

The evidence cited by the Star article includes... "one upper and two lower jaw bones, with intact teeth, several loose teeth, part of a toe bone and intact finger bones."

[Such conclusions based on that little amount of actual material, humorously brings to mind the beer commercial... "BRILLIANT!!!"]

If indeed these fragments disprove creationism, what theory of origins do they prove?

[Perhaps if only they'd have found another tooth or two, they could have nailed down the entire formula for the Big Bang -- naturally creating something from nothing, without calling it miraculous. ]

[Perhaps it's time to replay the tongue-in-cheek article... "A One-Bit Theory Of The Universe".]

Eric Swanson Coming To Indy... "The Externally Focused Church"

Eric Swanson

"If your church pulled out of your community, would your community weep? Would anybody even notice? Would anybody even care? Questions like those are why pastors and congregational leaders around the nation are who are thinking differently about church. They have a growing awareness that effectiveness is not measured by what happens inside the church but by the impact the people in their church are having on their city or community. These are the externally focused churches. "

"If we want to be the salt and light that we as the church were created to be, we have to do something different… we have to be something different! "

Barna Report: "Influencers On Churches"

No surprise here.

"Billy Graham may not be as active or as publicly visible as he once was, but he remains the most trusted spokesman for the Christian faith in the U.S. His ministry peers also regard him as the person who has the greatest influence on American churches and church leaders. That is the assessment of a national sample of pastors of Protestant churches in a survey conducted by The Barna Group (Ventura, California). The survey also discovered that the ranking of the most influential and the most trusted spokespersons varied among different groups of pastors – with the exception of Mr. Graham topping both lists among every segment of the clergy. Better Image of a Pastor...

...posted at "BikeHiker"
[Indianapolis pastor John Hay]

"Most images of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. depict the pastor/civil rights leader behind a pulpit or before a great throng of adoring people. But I prefer the pictures of this Christian minister being manhandled by government authorities serving vested white interests. King's primary witness and power come not from the pulpit and podium, but from his stand in the streets with unnamed people with whom he identified and for whom he gave his life..."

Divided By Faith...

[For purchase at Indy Christian Mall.com
or
available on loan from
Crossroads Bible College library.]

In yesterday's IndyStar's article below, Michael Emerson's book, "Divided by Faith" was quoted regarding the still-ultra-small percentage (8%) of our churches that are effectively multi-ethnic to any significant degree. In fact, Emerson (a white evangelical) makes the case that because evangelicals tend to be tightly-knit groups we effectively accentuate the racial divide... all the while believing we're doing our best to fight the last vestiges of racism.

Upon Dr. Ware's recommendation, I decided to read this book. [And immediately, Emerson's premise offended me greatly. This just cannot be true, can it? White evangelicals care very much about the racial divide. At least as individuals we do. So I suspect this premise may challenge you as it did me.

But Emerson cites the easily understood illustration of job-networking in a competitive world. Who among the job-applicants for a position has the best chance if one of the applicants has an inside contact? Obviously, the one who has inside information, and has a chance of even being perceived as an 'insider' applicant. Everyone else is effectively an 'outsider'. Thus we see that our social networks tend to help our friends get positions. For instance, it's true of neighborhood-based social networks... which of course still tend to be generally homogenous. And, Emerson asserts, it's even more true in generally tight evangelical Christian circles. Thus it's easy enough to see through this one example that our Sunday morning 'segregation-hour' practice effectively works against our already under-privileged Christian brothers & sisters of different races... simply because we white evangelicals don't know other Christians different than ourselves.

Our evangelical social structures are actually working against what we say we believe personally. It becomes increasingly clear that we need to move beyond personal beliefs bereft of collective action... and move toward being intentional about re-engineering our current social networking as evangelicals.

Perhaps an ongoing dialog here at IndyChristian would help toward that end, especially now that we're moving into a more collaborative & diverse format (including commenting capabilities below). Your thoughts?

I suspect Emerson (and co-author, Christian Smith -- an African American) will challenge every Christian heart who reads this book... to do something different tomorrow. It did for me.

Here's an excerpt from the publisher...

"In recent years, the leaders of the American evangelical movement have brought their characteristic passion to the problem of race, notably in the Promise Keepers movement and in reconciliation theology. But the authors of this provocative new study reveal that despite their good intentions, evangelicals may actually be preserving America's racial chasm." [continue]

How Hugh's book will help you get it...

Tod Bolsinger -- pastor & neophyte blogger -- writes a great column about Hugh Hewitt's new book... "Blog -- Understanding the Information Reformation".

Tod: "As I said, back then, I didn’t get it. I just blogged because Mark said it was a good way to get some ideas out and get some people to interact with my writing. Now, three months and 20,000 hits later, it’s coming into focus. This blog thing is powerful. If you read his book, you will get it much easier. Bottom line: There is no more effective, cost efficient, time efficient and growing way to communicate something as important as the truth of Christianity than through a whole hosts of pastors and teachers blogging. And, if Hugh is correct, this is only the beginning of a whole 'reformation.' "

Missing: Collaborative Christian Services

Please help us identify those Christians & their ministries or businesses that provide these types of services. Leave a comment below.

And if this is an area needing considerable collaboration as a Christian network, please leave your comments as to how best to work together toward a solution. Your comments will be appreciated.

Example: Transportation
[however, click for new wiki page for Transportation. PTL].
Consider how difficult it is for many people to find jobs... without adequate transportation. Their options become much more limited. Or how many seniors need transportation -- not just to medical appointments, but also perhaps to church, or to see their lifelong friends or relatives. While it may seem like an insurmountable task for an individual church to take on, think of how many ministry vehicles sit most of the week unused. Surely as a citywide network we could start finding a solution -- perhaps building a Christian transportation network. [See subsequent comments below re Transportation.]
