God's Word

No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, b ut only the Father. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: Watch!

Politician blasts gay marriage, divorce

[excerpted from FortWayne.com]

EVANSVILLE — U.S. Rep. John Hostettler told a gathering of clergy that divorce is as dangerous to society as gay marriage and that churches are essential to strengthening families.

“The picture of marriage is the picture of Christian salvation,” Hostettler, R-Ind., said Tuesday. “Any diminishing of that notion — whether homosexual marriage or any other degradation of marriage — is something we must fight in public policy.”...

Wheeler Mission asks for your help

Excerpts from mail received from Rick Alvis, Exec. Dir. of Wheeler Mission...
Fri, Aug 26, 2005 at 9:35 AM

Never in my career have I sent an email to everyone on my mailing list, but an important matter is coming before the City-County Council, and I need your help.

Several months ago, Wheeler Mission made an offer to purchase four acres of property at 2801 South Penn to build a new Women and Children's Center, pending proper zoning. Our zoning request went before the Department of Metropolitan Development and was passed by a vote of 4-3. That vote now has to be ratified by the City-County Council. Dane Mahern, who is the Councilor of the district in which this site resides, has decided to oppose the rezoning. Wheeler has met several times with Dane and his constituents, but both parties failed to come an agreement on the number of women to be served at the site.

The petition must now go before the full Council to affirm or deny rezoning. This important meeting is scheduled to take place this Monday, August 29.

Council members have only heard from the remonstrators. They have not heard much from our donors or people supporting this project. This is where you come in.

My request to you is to pick up the phone immediately and call any--and every--member of the Council you know to request that they support the rezoning. There is no need to call the Mayor's office, as the Mayor supports the project.

The Times Speaks: "No Miracles Allowed"

[excerpting from GetReligion.org]

“The Cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be.”

This is, of course, the famous credo used time and time again by the late Dr. Carl Sagan. What has always fascinated me about this statement is its open use of religious — even creedal — form and its willingness to launch beyond the rules of science and into a kind of anti-theology.

How, in a lab, can one prove under the rules of science that the material world is all there is? How does one run scientific experiments in the past? And how in the world does one claim to be able to test the future?

Sagan knew what he was doing, of course. I had a chance to ask him about it. He knew his famous Cosmos series was making an argument that the scientific evidence backed up these sweeping truth claims that carried him far outside the rules of research. He believed he had the facts on his side and, thus, he was willing to make a leap of faith from facts to a larger philosophy. Then he became an evangelist for this philosophical point of view.

I was reminded of Sagan while reading the massive New York Times series on how the priesthood of modern science is responding to the rebels gathered under the banner of Intelligent Design. Click here to go to a clearinghouse page for all of the Gray Lady’s efforts on this issue in the recent past.

Clearly we are in the midst of a blitz. Cages have been rattled... [continued at GetReligion.org]

Hoosier connection: The newest writer on 'Get Religion' is Daniel Pulliam, a Washington writer for Government Executive, former editor of Butler University's online 'DawgNet', and son of Indianapolis Star journalist, Russ Pulliam. Read Daniel's recent article, "Indulgences in the Land of Luther".

*********************************
IndyChristian.com Note: I recently watched the first of a Nova series on PBS called "Origins"... anxious to see which theory of 'origins' they would postulate. They used a 4.5 billion-year timeline, equating it to 24 hours on a clock, and then positioned each key 'event' on the clockface.

In the end, though, I was disappointed. They had successfully danced with the elephant all evening, but avoided his feet... the question of 'origin'... i.e. the beginning... 'What caused (their) clock to tick from 12:00:00 to 12:00:01?"

The Times article perhaps suggests the reason for this glaring omission... "Sorry, no miracles allowed."

Walk for Life...

God's Word

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Judge Went Too Far?

Did Judge Bradford go too far, in the Wiccan case?

Indianapolis Star: "Yes".

IndyChristian.com: "No".

[Indianapolis Star editorial continued at IndyStar.com]

IndyChristian:

Sorry -- this isn't just a theoretical issue. It's a very practical issue -- our community's children are already much at risk, even in the best of settings.

Two weeks ago I attended a 'townhall' meeting called by pastors on the westside which included the mayor and many civic leaders, heroes and others from among the community. During those 3 hours of problem-solving on behalf of young kids dying in the streets of Indianapolis, I did not hear a single person speak of needing more divorces, or for families to have more 'religious' rights to teach their children Wicca. But I heard a whole lot of people talking common sense about rebuilding solid families, and providing solid moral teaching, mentoring and church involvement.

Again, we understand the potential for judicial abuse in restricting religious teachings among children. Perhaps we evangelicals have heard too much about judicial activism -- so much so that we begin running scared, as if earthly judges hold power over the Church and its purposes in the world.

In this case, more than fearing the potential for judicial activism against Christians, surely much more weight should come down on the side of 'common sense' on behalf of children. Let's consider Jesus' many teachings about 'children', and his harshness for those who would offend them. Children have a right to be born, and the right to be protected.

A parent's obligation to their child greatly surpasses their 'right' to put them at risk because of their 'religious beliefs'.

A judge's obligation is to take all the facts into consideration, presumably including the condition of the family unit; and then err if he or she must... on the side of the child.

Judge Bradford seemed to carry out his duty well.

Bradford Overruled. Parents can share Wicca with son

"An Indianapolis father can share his Wiccan beliefs and rituals with his 10-year-old son, a state appeals court ruled Wednesday in a unanimous decision upholding parents' rights to share their religion with their children.

The court declared that a Marion County judge erred in approving a divorce decree last year that also directed the man and his ex-wife to shelter their son from "non-mainstream religious beliefs and rituals."

FHL Week

Faith, Hope and Love week
By Merlin Gonzales

A vision that started last year to reach out in our community and a prayer asking the Lord to send us workers became a reality on July 24th to 30th, 2005.

Seven churches became as what Steve Sjogren puts, “Go-and-do churches rather than come-and-see churches.” A combination of ten different cities and towns proclaimed Faith, Hope and Love Day on July 30, 2005. There were several radio stations, newspapers and an international TV station that got involved in a collective effort to report about FHL. We were swept away by the wave that the Lord created in our communities. To paraphrase what Rick Warren said, "We do not make the wave, the Lord make it and He choose when, how and where it will be. We are just so privilaged that He lets us ride His wave." Based on my personal experience, I am still riding His wave while watching wonders unfold before my eyes. I believe His wave is still roaring and active in our locality. I also believe that through His wave, we can accomplish more together and bless each other along the way.

On Sunday, July 24th, there were at least 120 volunteers who participated in the kick off prayer walk. It was about 105 degrees, but the cool thing was that different denominations and a very diverse group of people, from 1-1/2 years old to 72 years old came together to worship and to pray. The denomination walls among the churches crumbled like the walls of Jericho! Throughout the week the FHL group did 21 outreaches, such as cleaning windows of businesses, reading to elementary students, spending time with the elderly and adding a ramp to a house of a disabled woman. FHL provided several ways for volunteers to give back to the community!

How did this happen in such a short time of preparation? Another question that I asked myself just a few days ago was that why and how did the Pastors from different denominations worked in unity right away and they got really close to each other even though they did not even have any connections before? The FHL vision has been in their hearts...also the Mayors', businesses', etc. Here's a revelation to me during the early weeks of FHL planning... Ezra 1.

The favor rests upon the assignment. The Lord gave different assignments to different willing individuals and He made it happen! Bill Hybells wrote, “Jesus chose to advance His work primarily on the shoulders of ordinary people who live in the real world.” The volunteers teamed up with God on His Quest for Castleton/Nora areas. He gave the volunteers the Kingdom authority and the Spirit of God was present all over! The volunteers became Christ ministers to our community! And as they did their part, Jesus blessed the works of their hands; they accomplished much more with a lot less!

The purpose for this year was Faith Renewed, and boy did our faith renewed! Many volunteers were energized as they deepen their relationships with one another as they serve together day after day. Definitely, they received a lot more than they gave.
We did what a lot of people have been talking about for years… to unite the churches, government entities, educational institutions and other organizations to help those in needs in our neighborhoods in the name of Christ!

On Saturday, July 30th, was a real celebration of what has been accomplished all week long. We had 3 giant blow ups and 10 different carnival kids’ games, music and skits from different churches and lots of food.

Daniel Bernard wrote, “The goal of Christians is to affect the earth with as much of heaven as we can before we go there ourselves.” There’s only one bride of Christ and that is, “the big ‘C’ church.” The Lord provided us a way to mobilize the big “C” church in our area. It is our responsibility to invite others starting in our own neighborhood, to the entire state of Indiana and to the rest of the world. Next year’s purpose of FHL is Hope that Nurtures.

We’ll keep you posted as we move forward on FHL 2006! www.fhlcommunity.org
FHL will have the 2005 wrap up meeting at Vineyard Community Church on Thursday, August 18th at 10:30am. Please come if you can.

Two of Carmel's five food pantries and two of Fishers three agencies are desperate for donations, especially canned goods, as limited supplies continue to dwindle.

Chance said the solution is simple.

Also....

Noon news conference today:
Church Federation of Indianapolis is calling for 'Back to School Prayer'

"A new school year is starting and The Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis in cooperation with IPS (Indianapolis Public Schools) are calling churches citywide to pray for all students and for the people who care for our children as they go back to school - the parents/guardians, the new superintendent, teachers, counselors, administrators, bus drivers, custodians, lunch clerks, etc.

This idea came about when a concerned member of a charter member church of The Church Federation contacted the office via e-mail, “I thought of a way the Federation could help IPS…it would be great for all the churches to make a point of praying for IPS on the Sunday before classes start (August 14) and also have members commit to praying for IPS on the 18th (August 18)…with all the violence this summer, with a new leader and with small schools starting, I cannot think of a time IPS needed the prayers of the community more.”
  • Sunday, August 14th. Churches, please pray in advance of opening day.
  • Thursday, August 18th, when IPS goes back in session.

Reporting from "Call To Action"

Yesterday we posted the "Call To Action"... a meeting held last evening on the inner-city's west side, called by Christian leaders Olgen Williams, Mel Jackson and many others. It was attended by more than 400 community leaders, pastors, the mayor, a U.S. congresswoman, representatives from the governors office, city council officials, tv & radio stations... and the list goes on.

From the outset, the meeting was about brainstorming, not rhetoric or speeches. These communities know the problems already -- they need solutions & action.

Here's the article in the Indianapolis Star today.

While we heard many solutions offered, let me roll up the big conclusions I heard:
  • Churches come out of your shells and get involved if you're not already.
  • Parents need to step up. Listen to your kids. Don't be afraid to set & enforce boundaries.
  • Everyone... don't wait on politicians, police or others... we can do stuff to cure this now.
  • 'Mentoring' was heard over & over & over again. Plenty of opportunities. Few volunteer mentors.
  • Jesus Christ is the answer. Prayer is needed.
  • Re-connect the faith community for impact.

Following up... This morning the CCDA City Host Team will be meeting -- connecting many great Christian urban churches & ministries as we move toward November's national CCDA convention here in Indianapolis this year. Come be a part. We meet for breakfast the first Friday of every month. [details]

One next step that our Bible-believing churches & Christian leaders could take, is to come connect at the upcoming Transform Indiana ministry networking meeting next Tuesday (Aug 9, noon til 2pm) at the Unleavened Bread Cafe, where we'll be continuing working on such issues as we pray and pursue together... Abba Family Reunion: What God’s people look like

"This is the second year for a bold move by two Christian ministries — one in Mooresville and the other based in Indianapolis. A family picnic, “Abba Family Reunion Day,” is now designated as a “festival” by Mooresville Pioneer Park staff, and deemed an annual event by Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson.

The reunion mixes blacks, whites and Hispanics under the same tents, eating the same food and enjoying the same entertainment. The racial reconciliation effort between the two areas was begun in 2004 by New Hope Great Banquet and Crossing Over. The two groups are working hard to make this year’s picnic even better.

God's Word

For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

How To Use Our Site

We want to be your START page... in order to help build the body of Christ in Great Indianapolis ever-closer together in spirit and in impact. So come back often, daily even, and over time you'll get VERY familiar with how to use the site.

IndyChristian.com uses a standard blog-format. The most current articles appear on top. Previous articles move downward over time. And even when they get too old to be on the front page, they're archived by month. [See the month-links at bottom-right.]

The right-hand column links are more static in nature. They don't change too terribly often.

...except "WHEN ARE KEY MEETINGS/EVENTS?" near the top of the RH column. To us, key events are those citywide events which are most 'collaborative' in nature. That is, they're not just one church's event... They're typically several Bible-believing churches or ministries working together.

Now just keep reading down that RH column of links -- you'll see we've got some great stuff and great people that we link to. We wouldn't take our time to do that if they weren't neat people & the sites we want you to get to know.

We welcome your comments at the site -- Encouragements are always welcome. Or even if you perhaps disagree with what's been posted, we need to hear from you. Just bear in mind that because our writers represent a wide spectrum of 'Bible-believing' Christ-followers, probably NONE of us agree with EVERYTHING that's written here. In fact, a goal here is to stretch us all... at least to consider and compare what's said here, to what God has conveyed to us in His Word. Thus sharpen one another. Encourage one another toward love and good deeds.

We welcome your questions & emails -- so let us know whatever else you'd like to understand better. And we'd like to learn how you 'surf' as well -- what's important to you?

What would it take for IndyChristian.com to be YOUR daily start page?

P.S. WRITERS... Beyond just surfing the site... If you would consider yourself to be a Bible-believing, 'driven Christian' here in the Racing Capital of the World, who would like to write/post here periodically as might benefit our daily readers... email us. Our goal is to empower a broad spectrum of pastors, leaders, innovators, prayer-warriors and others... focused on accelerating the Great Commission here in our city, on our watch... by better-connecting the Church... and communicating among 'the team'.

National Night Out keep neighbors safe

When Joshua Dokes and his brother Ray chased down a purse-snatcher, the man had a warning.

"He said, 'I'll see you again,' and I said, 'I hope so,' " said the 6-foot-3, 285-pound Dokes, who retrieved the purse but let the crook go in his haste to check on the injured victim.
A few days later, the Dokes brothers of Southport did see the man again...

God's Word

I know that my Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.

God's Word
