An Open Letter To Our City Councillors

City Councillors...

We appreciate the hard work that you all do... and the situations you often have to deal with. So please know every Friday when you hear the "Community Prayer Siren" sound at 11am, that many many Christ-followers are praying for you and for our community.

Urban pastors press conference on city bill #622

Pastor Terry Webster leads a group of 20 urban pastors praying today at the city/county building for city councillors and for their wisdom to vote "No" to Monday night's bill #622 which includes portions seeking special rights for homosexuals.

Pastor Ezell Wiggins, Crossroads Bible College

11/29/2005 Press Release: "Organized Opposition Grows to City-County Council Proposal that would Elevate Homosexuality and Equate it With Race"

The pastors will also be interviewed by Dr. Amos Brown on Monday at 1:00 pm on 1310AM "The Light". Tune in.

“It is an offense to black people to be used – that the blood of our fathers and our own blood that was spilled on the pathways to civil rights should be used as a lever to get legal license to make their own choices law,” the Rev. Melvin Jackson, pastor at Christian Love Missionary Baptist Church and a participant in the civil rights marches of the 1960s, said after the vigil.“I lived in it and it’s a lie. We are the sons and daughters of slaves who were held in chains physically and by the laws so that we could not exercise our will. These are people who can exercise their will, but they must not do it under the guise of civil rights.” [Continued at IndyStar.com]

[Stay tuned for further stories, pictures, quotes and links as the story develops. In the meantime, please pray for our community leaders to govern wisely and accordingly to godly standards.]

CCDA Pictures???

Who has some pictures from CCDA Indy 2005 that they'd be willing to share? CCDA national office would also be interested -- contact us. Thanks!

Operation Starting Line...

Another great element of CCDA for me, was getting to know leaders of other great collaborative initiatives underway elsewhere in the country which could also be applicable here in Indy & Indiana. One such leader was Paul Krueger, Navigators, who is working with Prison Fellowship and many other nationally-known evangelical ministries, toward a very collaborative approach to jail issues... God's Word

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Rudy remembers Spencer Perkins

The preeminent CCDA blogger, Rudy Carrasco -- who turned me onto this new free & easy publishing vehicle -- returned home to Pasadena to blog his reflections from the conference and some of the reconciliation issues still at hand. Rudy refers us to a great article written by Dr. John Perkins' son, Spencer...

"This quote comes from the article, Playing the Grace Card by Spencer Perkins. It’s the text of the last public address Spencer ever gave. He addressed a racial reconciliation conference in early 1998, and one week later he suffered heart failure and died. In my recent musings about race I remembered this article and dug it up at the [Christianity Today] Library."

Spencer Perkins
1954-1999

"We African Americans have rightly considered much of white Christianity illegitimate because it accommodated itself so conveniently to racism. But lately I have been questioning our own brand of Christianity. What does our inability to forgive and embrace undeserving whites say about our knowledge of and intimacy with this God of grace?"

Prayer Journaling during CCDA

During the CCDA conference, they'd set aside a special Prayer Room. Contained in the room were a piano keyboard, cd-player, painting easel, a 'wailing wall' for sticky-note prayer requests, and a 'praise wall' also for sticky-notes of praise. The room was staffed by volunteers throughout the conference, and we owe a debt of gratitude to Steve Freeman for coordinating the room and volunteers. ['Thanks Steve!']. And now they've posted an edited copy of the special Prayer Journal maintained there as well -- For those of you who did not get to be with us, perhaps you'll enjoy catching some of the flavor, by observing the prayer warriors' several notes journaled there. CCDA & TechMission...

"I just signed up as a member of TechMission.

During the 2005 CCDA conference, I had the opportunity to meet Andrew Sears and Francois Augustin. Francois and I sat down over supper and had some initial conversations about the idea of a non-profit MMORPG for faith-based after-school computer clubs.I'd encourage anyone interested in the use of computers in after-school programs to seriously consider joining in this association. It is a fantastic group of people who are seeking to engage in wholistic developmental urban youth work through the use of new media..."

God's Word

I went past the field of the sluggard, past the vineyard of
the man who lacks judgment; thorns had come up everywhere,
the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in
ruins. I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a

little folding of the hands to rest--and poverty will come
on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man.

Thanksgiving for CCDA...

"Praise Him for a powerful conference, and to Him be all the praise, glory and honor. Amen? AMEN!!! It seems such an appropriate time at this Thanksgiving Day weekend togive thanks to God for He is good, all the time, for yes, all the time, He is good; therefore, I give thanks to God for each and every one ofyou. I thank Him for the initial success of the conference and I thankHim for the many actual ways we will experience the true success of thisconference as the seeds that were planted will come to fruition. I echo your sentiments loudly and proudly, especially the Prayer Room, the Cyber Cafe and our Volunteer Room. I was so incredibly proud of our Host Committee Dream Team, and especially in these three areas. Indeed,God prepared us for a time such as this. I am humbled to have been a small part of it. Thank you all my brothers and sisters. I look forwardto seeing you all this Friday, December 2 for our final Host Committee meeting.

Finding Rides

Because most of the youth in our Youth Group cannot drive, they rely on others (usually parents) to drive them to events.

But most of the youth live relatively close to each other.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a map which dynamically displayed where their Youth Group members lived so that they could carpool?

Carpooling would reduce stress on parents and creation.

Enter Google Maps.

Even with no technical knowledge, groups can create their own maps which display where their members live. For a list of such sites, please see Google Maps Mania and scroll to where it says, "Google Maps Creation Tools/How-Tos:" in the right-hand column.

I'll report next month on how we used this in our group.

CCDA Indy 2005 now officially... adjourned.

What a terrific week this has been!

We all hate to see it end, but it's time to 'get back to the hard work' of doing what all these folks do, ministering to 'the least of these'.

We're anxious to receive any pictures from the conference that any of you took -- email them to coach@goal-partners.com.

And we'll be following up all this next week, with reflections from the conference, that we didn't have time to blog during all the events.

To those of you returning to your various cities... Go in peace. Be safe. Change the world in the name of Christ.

And we'll see you next year... in PHILLY !

God's Word

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you
that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.

Called to serve the needy...

Russ Pulliam, IndyStar

Some of the inventors of compassionate conservatism are coming to town this week.

Their organization, the Christian Community Development Association, will have its annual conference in Indianapolis this week.

Former Philadelphia Eagles running back Herb Lusk will lead off as a prayer breakfast speaker Wednesday. Lusk, an African-American pastor, has led his Philadelphia church in developing welfare-to-work programs as well as a charter school. Occasionally linking up with the singer Bono for a fundraising concert, Lusk heads up Stand for Africa efforts to help orphans whose parents died of AIDS.

Lusk is an example of what President Bush is talking about when he mentions faith-based initiatives in the inner city or compassionate conservatism.

If Lusk could be called a father of compassionate conservatism, then John Perkins might qualify as a grandfather of the grassroots movement. The Mississippi civil rights worker is a founder of the CCDA and a key leader at the convention.

Growing up in Mississippi, Perkins saw his brother killed by the police. He fled to a better life in California. A conversion to Christ brought him back to Mississippi to help his people, through a mixture of... [continued at IndyStar.com]

God's Word

He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God." The Jews answered him, "Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?" "I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death." At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?"

Regional Networking...

Mark your calendars for Thursday, Nov.17, 4:00pm...

...and plan to come be with many of the Bible-believing Christian pastors, leaders and other 'driven Christians' from the Indy/Indiana area.

The CCDA conference has specially designated this hour to 'Regional Networking', so the conference attendees, the local City Host Team, and many more from the Transform Indiana ministry network will be coming together to facilitate interaction, consider many collaborative initiatives for 2006, and develop a great number of ties in the great 'net' that is forming, to better harmonize prayer, care and share... city by city throughout Indiana.

Stay in touch with all the latest CCDA-related news throughout the conference week, at... IndyChristian.com.

God's Word

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion - to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.

Worldview Weekend

The modern Christian is constantly bombarded with information and opinions by the media, the schools, and the government. Who could hope to assimilate and comprehend such an array of material? Who could possibly understand the times in which we live? Not many! But those men and women who do understand, become the next generation of leaders. The Bible speaks of a small tribe in Israel that "understood the times" and knew "what Israel ought to do", and as a result were granted positions of leadership (I Chronicles 12:32). God expects His people to seek earnestly for the truth, rewarding those who understand the truth with greater responsibility - and with a call to leadership.

The Indianapolis 'weekend', Nov.18-19, will feature Ray Comfort, Kirk Cameron, and many more.

Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." So they
asked him, "What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." "Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread." Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. The Art of CinemaTherapy

What I’ve Learned From The Movies

By Dr. Noah H. Kersey, Ph.D.

Growing up in the fifties and sixties, my two favorite things to do were to read comic books and go to the movies at a downtown theatre, which was long before we had video games, personal computers, or DVDs.

I learned from comics that I wanted to be like the superheroes, especially ‘Superman’, because they always helped people who were in trouble. At the theatre, it was like magic, the smell of popcorn and the thrill of escape from the doldrums of reality and into the world of adventure.

Reaching adulthood, I became a Christian and reading my Bible became a high priority. I gained a great deal of comfort reading proverbs and psalms. It soothed my fears and helped me feel closer to God, which is something I always wanted. I had my favorite Bible verses, like Philippians 4:6 “Be anxious for nothing……” and Psalms 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God….”. [continue]

For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:40

Lessons learned from Rosa Parks

"It’s been said that the eleven o’clock hour on Sunday morning is still the most segregated hour of the week in our nation. Sadly, that is still a reality", said Dr. Charles Ware, a frequent speaker at Answers in Genesis conferences and president of Crossroads Bible College.

God's Word

Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not
escape. But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.

1 Thessalonians 5:1-6

Prayer for the CCDA convention...

Everyone... Please be praying for the coming CCDA convention. We're down to the final 2 weeks, so you can imagine all the hard work going into this collaborative effort by people here and all over the country... getting ready to be together in Indy November 16th (through the 20th).

Also... prayer warriors that would like to join the 24x7 prayer effort for this great time together, should contact Steve Freeman.

And remember, the plenary sessions and ministry booth area will be FREE to the local community -- it'll be a great time and way to participate together as we pray, plan and pursue Christian community development here for years to come.

"Well done"...?

"We must acknowledge that the Church during the past nineteen centuries has been extremely negligent in her duty, and that the crying need of our time is for her to take seriously the task assigned to her. Instead of discussions of social and economic and political problems, book reviews and entertaining platitudes from the pulpit the need is for sermons with real Gospel content, designed to change lives and to save souls. The charge of negligence applies, of course, not only to ministers, but equally to the laity. Every individual Christian is called to give his witness and to show his faith by personal testimony, or through the distribution of the printed word, or through the generous and effective use of his time and money for Christian purposes. Christ commanded the evangelization of the world. That is our task. Surely He will not, and in fact cannot, come back and say to His Church, "Well done, good and faithful servant," until that task has been accomplished." [Boettner]

God's Word

He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

Matthew 12:48-50

God's Word

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are -- yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:14-16
