What lack I yet?

by Pastor Jim Brown
Horizon Christian Fellowship
(www.calvarychapel.com/hcfw)

Jesus details the difficulty of the rich entering into the kingdom of Heaven in Matthew chapter 19. The rich have another problem as well...that which follows the parable of the sown seed – remember some seed falls on the path, some on the rocky ground, some gets choked out by weeds and some grows and bears fruit.

The same issue that keeps the rich out of heaven chokes whatever fruit they might bear if they do become saved...they won’t let go of what they have and what they want! Have you ever heard someone say “I just need to put more away in the bank so I can retire early”, or “I just need to make my first million”, or “I...”? The same goes for the drug user/junkie who is homeless on the street: “I just need to break this” or “I need to clean up my act” or “I...”.

The real problem is that rich and poor, all who think “THEY” have to do the work in their life have an “I” problem. Our salvation is not about us but rather what God has done for us...and He puts no “works” requirement on either salvation or maintaining our position in His grace BUT...He does call us to forsake all other gods. Herein lies the problem: when we have an “I” problem we have not forsaken other gods, we are worshipping the god of self and of self-righteousness always having a justification for not obeying God and NEVER drawing closer. We always think we have to be the one to do the work rather than ceasing from our own works and allowing God to work His plan in our lives and through us for His kingdom.

The parable of the rich young ruler is simply a demonstration to all of us that we can not and should not hold onto anything of the temporal – rather our focus must be on the eternal and the treasures that can be stored there and the fact that we are not our own – we were bought with the ultimate price of the blood of God’s Son: Jesus Christ. That price, paid through pain and suffering and humiliation is the ultimate price and as we see the motivation behind it – as we see how much God loves us – we will leave ALL OTHER gods BEHIND and follow our Savior.

Pray with me that we see the shallowness of seeking first our kingdom rather than God’s eternal kingdom and purpose for our lives...

Matthew 19:16-26 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. 23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved? 26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

God's Word

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone
through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold
firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high
priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but
we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we
are -- yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne
of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and
find grace to help us in our time of need.

Christian Theological Seminary, 1000 West 42nd Street (map)
Thursday, November 9, 2006
6:00pm – 8:00pm

The Community Crime Prevention Task Force, organized by the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, invites all faith leaders and faith-based organizations to participate in a meeting focused on gathering information and listening to ideas from the faith community to reduce the crime in Indianapolis.

The Task Force has been charged to examine the underlying causes that have led to the surge of violence and is eager to hear about the experiences in the faith community and how congregations and/or organizations have been successful in addressing the social and service needs in our city.

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring information about programs (small and large) and ideas for collaboration with other organizations for a more efficient and effective meeting.

If at all possible, it would be helpful if organizations can provide printed material or a written report that includes:

  • Statistical and demographic data relating to the individuals and groups served.
  • Data demonstrating that the organization has been effective in providing services and social programs.

Please support the efforts of the task force by sharing this invitation with faith leaders, senior pastors, program ministers and lay volunteers.

Please RSVP to Barbara Glass at 327-3601 or bglass@indygov.org. If an organization cannot be represented at this event but would like to share information for future reference, please fax information to the attention of Barbara Glass at 327-3980 or send by e-mail.

In advance, the Mayor and the Community Crime Prevention Task Force acknowledge and thank the faith community for all of the work already being done and every effort that will help our community meet some very critical challenges.

...and I will give you rest

by Pastor Jim Brown
Horizon Christian Fellowship

Jesus made a very profound statement in Matthew 11:28-30. In this passage, Jesus tells us that all who are heavy laden (carrying a big load) and all who labor (working very hard) can come to Him and He will give them rest. He continues and tells us that instead of our yokes of toil and labor, we should put His on and learn of Him – for He is “meek and lowly in heart” and then we shall find rest unto our souls. Here we now see contextually that Jesus is speaking of “spiritual” labor and a being “spiritually” heavy laden.

The key to gaining rest from Jesus is found in verse 29...take our yokes of burden off, put His on then learn of Him (for He is meek and lowly of heart). In learning of Jesus we will indeed see that He was meek as He walked the earth. The word “meek” in the Greek means “strength under control” and Jesus’ strength was under complete control of the Father in Heaven. Lowly in heart speaks to the knowledge that as a human being (remember Jesus condescended to become the form of a man but He was truly God as well) there is no opportunity for pride, boasting or arrogance, rather we should be poor in spirit, mourn our poor spirit and be meek to be blessed (Matt 5:3-5). The key to resting from our striving burdens and toils is to STOP, and walk in the leading of the Holy Spirit for our lives doing ONLY that which the Holy Spirit tells us (and He knows our name, so we don’t have to be told by someone else to do it!).

When we stop striving to do “good works” that are not of God but are rather a feeble attempt on our part to please God or to please a man, only then will we begin to rest! Then, when we have put Jesus’ yoke on and learned of Him and begin walking in meekness, we will see that (verse 30) His yoke truly is easy and His burden truly is light. If today, you are doing something that God has not called you to do, stop! Right now – right here - just stop. It won’t gain you anything in Heaven and that’s where our focus must be. But, if God HAS called you to something (and you know that you know that you know that HE called you and not some man) “be not weary in well doing”.

Jesus loves us, this we know, for the Bible tells us so. He is just looking for those whose heart is perfect towards Him that He may show His strength on their behalf. Jesus’ yoke is easy and is the only yoke we can use as our comparison. Labor to enter into the rest that only comes from Jesus when we cease our own works and take on His (Heb 4:10).

Pray with me that we might only follow the leading of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ...

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also!

by Pastor Jim Brown
Horizon Christian Fellowship

Who is your master? It’s a good question - but for some, it’s also a hard question. What motivates our life IS our master. Especially in today’s society, it is common to let our job or our children drive us, or maybe it’s our inward need for success or our love of MONEY or whatever our motivation might be, it is our master.

Jesus said, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other”. This very pointedly shows us that if we are serving another master than Jesus Christ, who died for us and rose again that we might live for eternity, then we are hating or despising God.

Thinking of those who serve money (and you don’t have to be rich to do so) or power or fame or cars or THEMSELVES and how empty the entire pursuit is...how empty their treasure box in Heaven will be. Thinking of the poor and meek in Spirit (Matt 5) will then show us those who will ultimately be rich in Heaven – for they are (without even trying) storing up the greatest treasures beyond our wildest dreams. They will, when they are standing before our Lord, hear the greatest compliment that we can hope for: “Well done thou good and faithful servant! Enter thou into the joy of the Lord”.

If we are of the mind that we have been serving another master and want to change – God is calling us to repentance today. He is calling us to love Him with all of our heart, mind, soul &strength. He is calling us into a loving relationship based upon trust (our trust in Him), faith, and intimacy. A relationship is all about sharing our hearts with Him and learning of Him and seeking His will for our lives and choosing NOT to simply follow our own selfish and/or self-righteous desires. To serve God, His will, His desires and His heart must be foremost in our minds and hearts and our actions will follow.

Pray with me that OUR master is THE MASTER, Jesus Christ our Savior...

Matthew 6:19-24 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. 22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging. "They hit me," you will say, "but I'm not hurt! The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away. When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. "Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." They discussed this among themselves and said,"It is because we didn't bring any bread." Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit!

by Pastor Jim Brown
Horizon Christian Fellowship

In Zechariah 4:6 God tells Zerubbabel through the prophet Zechariah that he should cease from his own works and striving and “trying” and allow God to do the work through him and for him. This concept is contrary to our prideful nature – we naturally want to “do” and then get the credit (the glory). However, if we really want to do what God desires for us, then we will allow Him to effect change, to direct our path and to guide our hands (and lives). This is the ultimate in trusting God and is exactly what He desires for us – His children.

The author of the book to the Hebrews, in chapter 4, tells us that we should labor to enter into the rest that God has for us...how do we labor to rest? We labor by choosing to yield our lives to God and by choosing to cease from our own works and simply rest (and trust) in the fact that God is God and we are not. We rest in the fact that God has a much bigger plan than we could ever conceive and that He know best what is the greater good for each of us as well as how it works out in the plan of redemption and blessing for all the earth across all time.

If we want to be in the center of God’s will for our lives, if we want to be walking a victorious Christian life and have that joy that comes from fellowship with the Father, then we must cease from using our “own” power, we must cease from using our “own” might and simply allow God to be God and ask for His Spirit to work in us and through us to conform us to the image of His Son, Jesus, and to effect the changes and directions for our lives that only He can give.

Pray with me that we choose to yield up ourselves and cease from our own works and rest in God’s Holy Spirit and eternal plan...
=======================
Zechariah 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

Hebrews 4:9-11 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Walk humbly with thy God

by Pastor Jim Brown
Horizon Christian Fellowship

The rhetorical question is posed in Micah 6:6-7 of how can I come before the Lord and have Him be well pleased with me...the answer was not “good works”, rather to walk in the ways of God. This is our message today-we can not please God and be in fellowship with Him without walking in His ways...

His first and foremost way is the acceptance of His Son, Jesus Christ, as our personal Lord and Savior. Without the shed blood of Jesus and His sacrificial death on the cross, we have NO ability whatsoever to approach the throne of God, to speak to Him or to fellowship with Him. That said, and moving forward with the assumption that we are saved, then God’s ways (and we see this in the life of Jesus) are to walk justly (loving all man-kind equally and without partiality), to love mercy (don’t give to people what they deserve, rather extend the grace that we have received through our redemption to others), and to walk humbly with thy God.

What does walk humbly with thy God mean? It means submitting ourselves to His direction with the understanding that He knows far more than we. It means looking to Him for His mercy and grace as we will always fail but He will never fail. It means obeying His commands as they are perfect and because He is perfect we will do it out of love. 1Samuel echoed this sentiment when Samuel the prophet told us that to obey is better than sacrifice. The only sacrifice God wants from us is our life as we give it out of love.

The paradigm of grace, as opposed to the works that come from religion, is that through the acceptance of God’s grace we have the ability to have relationship and not just religion. This is why the first great commandment is to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, strength & and our every breath (basically everything that we are). Look at the ideal father-child relationship...that’s what God desires with us: when we come home, we don’t expect our children to come to us sacrificing and bowing down and paying homage to us...rather we desire the fellowship and relationship that comes from love (hugs and hearing about their day).

Pray with me that we walk humbly with God all of our days...
=======================
Micah 6:6-8 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

1 Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

God's Word

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

NAE President Identifies Youth Ministry As Most Important
Speaks to Mission America Coalition Annual Meeting

Pastor Ted Haggard

ST LOUIS, Mo., Oct. 11--Youth ministry is the most important factor in creating change in our culture, Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), told the annual conference of the Mission America Coalition (MAC) in St. Louis today.

He cited the broad exposure young people have to the increasing secularism and humanism in our culture and said the changes we work to make in our culture will not last if a generation of youth does not know Christ. "It doesn't matter if we protect the definition of marriage in this generation if the next generation doesn't have a clue what marriage means," he said.

"The youth pastors are some of the most important leaders in the city," he told nearly 150 church, ministry, and lay leaders from across the country. He also affirmed the need for the Church to work together, not separately, to accomplish God's purposes.

We are in a generation where there are coalitions of ministries who will say, "We are not going to let this generation go to Hell," he said, "we are not going to let MTV be more dominant in this generation than the church, we are not going to turn away from this generation...we are going to do something decisive in order to make a difference."

"If we do it on our knees...we can see this generation saved," Haggard affirmed.

The Mission America Coalition and the National Association of Evangelicals have long relationship and a strategic partnership--MAC serves as the evangelism partner of NAE. Haggard has been involved in MAC since its beginning.

The conference at the St. Louis Airport Marriott continues tomorrow with speakers Daniel de Leon (Hispanic Association of Bilingual/Bicultural Ministries), Paul Cedar (Mission America Coalition), John Nichols (Lazarus Foundation), and Lon Allison (Billy Graham Center).
On Thursday, Dave Olson (American Church Research Project) will unveil new research findings about the state of the church in U.S.

The Mission America Coalition is a network of churches, ministries, denominations, and Christian leaders with a shared vision to collaborate in prayer, evangelism, and revival. Since its inception, leaders from 81 denominations, over 350 ministries and dozens of ministry networks have been involved in the Coalition. Mrs. Vonette Bright (Campus Crusade for Christ), Dr. Billy Graham (Billy Graham Evangelistic Association), and Dr. John Perkins (Christian Community Development Association) serve as honorary co-chairs.

God's Word

Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies. Let a righteous man strike me - it is a kindness; let him rebuke me - it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers.

Liveblogging from Mission America Conference, St.Louis

Hey we're here LIVE in St. Louis, at the Mission America annual meeting. It's great -- not only as best-in-class information, but also in getting the opportunity to interact with key leaders who are anxious to carry out the Great Commission at full throttle.

Example: I was able to have lunch with Dr. Paul Cedar, Chairman, Lausanne Committee for World Evangelism, and president of MAC. Yet all the others at our table were equally impressive in their own rite, as active cityreachers for Christ. And I learned, from hearing their interactions as well.]

For informal notes and copies of handouts from the conference, log-in at at CrossroadsConnection.com. We'll hope to share some of the highlights here.

[If you're actively involved in reaching your community for Christ, let us know. You're the very ones we're anxious to get to know and communicate with 'inside' this collaborative site among neat leaders & people in the trenches. ]

Stay tuned. I'll hope to blog a few salient points from last night's plenary speaker -- Ted Haggard, President, National Association of Evangelicals.

I'll always associate Pastor Haggard with his phrase...

"Make it hard to go to hell
from your city!"

God's Word

I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out - those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

Daniel purposed in his heart...

by Pastor Jim Brown
Horizon Christian Fellowship

Daniel “purposed” in his heart that he would not defile himself with the things of his captives (the Babylonians). He made the choice to follow the desires of his LORD and not the world around him. Even when forced to serve the king, immersed in the ways of these strange people and with his sustenance (and life) on the line...Daniel chose God.

We have the same choice every day...the choice of following after the world’s ways or God’s. We are to be in the world but not of the world. Our life is one of choice but the heart of God for our lives is His way – just as the father knows how to keep his child safe, so does our Father in Heaven know how to keep us safe. Our safety is more of a spiritual one, however, as the way of the world is one of idolatry and greed, lust and deceit, power and money and all that will hold us back from God when they become more important than God.

Daniel “purposed” in his heart – have we? Do we wake up and purpose to follow after God this day? Do we ask for our daily allotment of the Holy Spirit from God that we might have the power to not conform to this world and to allow our hearts to be transformed to the next?

We all have a choice...we can walk in our own ways – the ways of the world, or we can choose to follow God. Does that mean we’ll be perfect? No. The Christian walk is one of falling down and getting up and each time we do get up we should purpose anew to not yield our members to unrighteousness but to the Spirit of the living God. Paul tells us to walk in the Spirit and we will not fulfill the lusts of our flesh. Are we walking in God’s Spirit? We need to – He is the only power that will keep us from the bondage and depravity of this world.

Pray with me that we “purpose” in our hearts to walk in the Spirit of the Living God every day of our lives...

Transform Indiana networking luncheon... Tues, Oct.17

The October 17th lunchtime meeting for ministry networking will rotate to the 'Pastors Seminary'... on the campus of Heartland Church in Fishers. We'll be hearing about their seminary, and we'll be discussing other seminary-related options here in the area.

Come join us -- meet other driven, Bible-believing Christians who are anxious to accelerate the Great Commission, by connecting ministries & individuals together, to collaborate in the one name of Christ.

Everyone welcome!

God's Word

Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful
generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."

Missions Merger: ACMC + Caleb Project = 'Initiative 360'

Littleton, Colorado - October 2, 2006 - Dr. Gregory Fritz, CEO of the former ACMC (Advancing Churches in Missions Commitment - Fort Wayne, Indiana) and Caleb Project (Littleton, Colorado) is pleased to announce the name and vision of the newly formed ministry: Initiative360 - Take it global.

Initiative360 seeks to further the kingdom of Jesus Christ by serving the missions interests of believers and the churches, agencies, and institutions of which they are a part in world outreach. The new organization will help believers and their churches explore, discover, and activate their roles in God’s mission, whether in local neighborhoods or around the world. As a partnership of members, Initiative360 will walk alongside churches on their missional journey with life-changing products, services, curriculum, and real-time experiences.

Regarding the new name, Fritz says, "I have always been encouraged and blessed by those who take initiative with the faith that God gives them. God himself is the Divine Initiator, the One who created the world and all mankind, redeems us from our sinful existence, and sends us out with his salvation message to the peoples who have yet to receive the gospel."

"Like the Joshua 3 story in which God moves the priests to first step in the river, we are called to take steps of faith and obedience." Fritz continues "and as we walk, he will lead us to the nations. As you take steps of faith and interact with those in your church, community, and the world, your obedience and love for Jesus will be an encouragement for those walking with you!"

Former CEO of ACMC and current President of Initiative360, Brent Eimer concurs. “By connecting with resources, web services, speaking and teaching services, networking frameworks, and powerful training events, Initiative360 partners will discover dramatically increased effectiveness in their missions calling!”

About Initiative360:

Initiative360 was formed in July 2006 when ACMC and Caleb Project joined forces. Combining the teams and skills of the two organizations energizes the movement toward bringing the gospel to every person and nation. Initiative360 partners will find many benefits through membership such as networking, web resources, equipping events and products, as well as many opportunities to activate missional passion.

A pro life eye for the Bayh guy? NOT!

Commentary by Rev. Tom Walker

Senator Evan Bayh joined 41 other senators in refusing to support a cloture motion last week that could have led to passage of the Child Custody Protection Act, legislation that would have made it a federal crime to transport a minor across state lines for an abortion.

Bayh' s actions are particularly disappointing in light of his previous floor vote in favor of the CCPA - a vote now seen as little more than a public relations vote.

Evan, did you think we were not looking? Is this to gain some sort of support from the far left? What troubles me (but doesn't surprise me) is that you act this way after being reelected. I suppose the timing is good for you though. Plenty enough time would pass if you failed at a presidential bid that locals might forget about this and some of your other recent history of pandering to the left. I only wish more Hoosiers could hear you talk when you're in Washington and 22 other states like I have.

You are likely surprised by this having experienced my soft prayerful approach in the past. Well there is still one thing you won't be surprised by. Know that I will continue to pray for you, Susan and the twins. Specifically that God will give you His discernment in all things.

Idols in their heart

by Pastor Jim Brown
Horizon Christian Fellowship

God wants to be the Lord of our lives...He wants to be everything to us and wants us to depend upon Him and Him alone!

In Ezekiel chapter 14, God speaks to Ezekiel and tells him that some of the elders (older and supposedly wiser men of the city) have set up idols in their hearts and because of this they are estranged from God. This always the case when we allow something else to become more important to us than God – idolatry is rampant in our society. Almost everyone we will speak to will have something that is more important than God in their hearts at one time or another.

An important “fact” regarding this heart-idolatry is found in verse 7...these idols become a stumbling block of iniquity in the eyes of the Lord. What might some of these “heart idols” be? Examples might include ourselves – what “we” want instead of what God wants for us, our own self-righteousness instead of standing on the righteousness that comes only from Christ, our jobs, money, power, children, spouse, hobby...this list goes on and on. The issue here is not that we are not to enjoy the life that God has blessed us with during this time we spend on earth, but rather that in all and through all we are to hold God as supreme in our hearts. Seeking the kingdom of God and HIS righteousness, loving the Lord God with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength, and laying our lives on His altar of sacrifice daily as we take up our cross, deny ourselves daily and follow Him are what God desires most for us.

Why is this important? Because God loves us, knows what is best for us and desires for us to be in the perfect center of HIS will for our lives. By the way, this response is natural for us as we see God’s goodness, His hand of mercy and ALL of the grace that He has extended to us – remember Romans 12:1 begins with the word “Therefore” (which is speaking to all of the greatness and love that God has poured out to us as documented in the previous 11 chapters of the book) present your bodies as living sacrifices...which is our REASONABLE service (not even our extraordinary service).

Pray with me that we see any “heart-idols” in our lives and cast them out that we might follow God alone...
=======================

Ezekiel 14:1-8 Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me. 2 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 3 Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them? 4 Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols; 5 That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols. 6 Therefore say unto the house of Israel , Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations. 7 For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself: 8 And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

God's Word

Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me -- just as the Father knows me and I know the Father -- and I lay down my life for the sheep."

Therefore have I hope...

by Pastor Jim Brown
Horizon Christian Fellowship

Lamentations 3:21-26
------------------------
21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
=======================

It is a wonderful thing that our salvation doesn’t depend upon our faithfulness, rather on God’s.

Great is HIS faithfulness!

It is a wonderful thing that God is longsuffering in extending His mercy to us and that His mercies are new every morning...every morning if we confess and repent we can start with a new “slate”. As we wait upon God for our ‘daily bread’, as we wait on Him for our very livelihood, as we place our hope in Him and seek Him as our portion for the day, we will see His goodness, His mercy, His love and His compassion on us as His children.

When life comes at us hard and when there seems to be no hope, we can (and should) both hope and wait on the Salvation of the Lord.

Pray with me that our first and only focus is on God and His portion for us this day...

The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it,
for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its
lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of
the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will
its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there.
The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.

are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Hundreds pack Conseco Fieldhouse for city prayer

[Indianapolis -- WISH-TV8]

Hundreds of people packed Conseco Fieldhouse Saturday night. Churches from across central Indiana came together to build a safer community through the power of prayer.

Saturday night's event was called ROCK Indy which stands for Reclaiming Our City and Kids. Organizers believe that one way to do that is by bringing together the religious community.

Those attending live by the mantra, "Alone we are one voice, but together we are a force."

The force at ROCK Indy are church members working together to build a safer community.

"We care about our city and we want to take our city back," Pastor Bill Jenkins said.

He said he knows the answer, "We believe that Jesus is the answer. If Jesus is the answer, the church has to mobilize itself. Break racial and denominational barriers and come together."
