Democrats take another look at the Bible

Russ Pulliam, IndyStar

Can Democrats learn to preach from the Bible as well as Republicans? Some party strategists hope so.

They fear the party's losses in recent elections can be blamed on swing voters who see their traditional values reflected more among Republicans.

Some Democratic presidential candidates talked about...

2006 FHL Week Stories & Testimonials

“While we were washing cars one lady asked how much it was, and once we told her it was free and we’re trying to show God’s love in a practical way, she started crying.”

“To tell you the truth, I was hesitant to come, but I am so glad I did. I had the best time. I felt very welcomed and included. Thank you for this great opportunity.”

“It was eye-opening to see people’s needs. I learned a lot from Mary, listening to her witness to people. I LOVE seeing different churches unified in one effort. There was no sense of ‘territory’ – just loving people and showing them Jesus.”

“It’s been an awesome week! I’ll miss it. Have FUN and be a Jesus Freak!”

“On the way home a car had run out of gas right in front of our van. Several guys got out of the van and pushed the young lady into the gas station. We prayed with her and then the van left. I stayed behing and talked to the girl for awhile. I found out that she didn't have any money for gas so I filled up her tank for her. I also was able to connect with her because she was a teen mom just trying to make it. For those of you who dont know I was pregnant at 16. God really just let me minister to her for awhile. It is amazing to me how he sets up all these little divine appointments. I gave her FREE tickets to the festival and game on saturday. Please pray that she comes out.”

At the end of the night we had prayer in the choir room. One of the gentlemen who had volunteered to work that night ended up getting saved during our prayer time. He said he was so touched by how nice everyone was that he wanted what we have. Wow!!! He has been here helping each night since with a smile on his face and FULL of Joy!!!

So you also, when you have done everything you were told to
do, should say, "We are unworthy servants; we have only done
our duty."

FAITH, HOPE & LOVE STORIES

July 27, 2006

There were more than 200 local missionaries gathered and served the community in Carmel/Westfield/Zionsville area including volunteers from Chicago, Florida, Texas and West VA. To date, almost 2000 trees were mulched in Hazel Dell Pkwy.

Southside area did home repairs, food and clothing giveaway, nursing home visitations and car wash. They also did painting cinema and bottle water giveaway. There were youth from around the Midwest who blessed the IPS schools through clean up and lawn care projects.

Castleton/Nora area did lawn mowing, light constructions. Other services/projects include clothing sorting and distributions and serving the (public) servants.

The West side area did trash pick ups and lawn care at Cameron Meadows.

“When we finally headed to Third Phase, our hearts were filled to see all that had been done. We had around 25 volunteers from Florida enthusiastically volunteer at Third Phase in the morning, and get so much accomplished, our jaws dropped when we walked through the door! We were able to finish up some projects we thought wouldn't get done this week, and helped move items in their food pantry”, Noblesville/Fishers area coordinator, Shelly Smith.

Day 40 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray that God’s Word will go forward in a Mighty and powerful way; that the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of the Word will illuminate our city and that darkness will be cast out. Pray that the Word of God will not be watered down and that the Living Word will be exemplified in all of our churches.
In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” John 1:1-2
This, then, is how you should pray,” Jesus said. “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen." Matthew 6:9-13

On behalf of Faith, Hope and Love community, Inc., thank you very much for praying with us for our city.

In Christ,

Reformation Society Luncheon... August 8th

Subsequent Change: November 14th luncheon will be at Body of Christ Community Church, 1919 E. 52nd Street, Indianapolis. [click for map] Pastor Andy Hunt will be the host.

**********************************
[just received via email]

Please join us August 8 for our next luncheon meeting at 12:00 noon until 1:45 p.m. at Second Reformed Presbyterian Church at 4800 N. Michigan Road, Indianapolis, IN. Please join us!

Our text and subject of discussion will be Romans 11:33-36, Biblical Benedictions: A Call to Modern Reformation. Our presenters are Dr. Michael LeFebvre, Frank Schutz, and Dave Parry.
Please put it on your calendar and plan now to attend. Give serious thought to who you could bring. Invite them now and chances are good that they would be available!

We look forward to this time of fellowship in the Word as we strengthen our hands for the work of the ministry entrusted to each of us. This kind of Bible study Calvin, Knox and other Reformation leaders throughout Europe believed was an essential factor in the continuing work of reformation. The Holy Spirit working through godly men brings fresh understanding.

Come prepared with your own study of Romans 11:33-36, and participate in the discussion session following the speakers.

To RSVP for the luncheon please call (317) 255-7557.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Our future luncheons are:

  • October 10 studying II Cor.13:14;
  • December 5, 2006

Also, mark your calendars for the Fall Conference which will be on October 13 and 14, 2006. Rev. Richard Phillips and Dr. Roy Blackwood will be the conference speakers.

FHL Day July 25, 2006

One person who heard about FHL from a Hispanic media accepted the Lord yesterday and he is now one of the FHL missionaries.

Yesterday, one team delivered water to construction workers. When the supervisor saw them he came over to see what was happening. He told the team that in his 27 years of construction work, no one had ever stopped to bring water to him. He was deeply touched by this small act of kindness.

FHL Prayer Trailer made an appearance in the Southside Area and had tremendous time praying with and for the local residents.

A person from who received landscaping services was very thankful because he is not able to do extensive outside work due to his accident a few months ago.

There were several light constructions being performed all over Indianapolis.

It is now estimated that the number of local community missionaries who registered could exceed 1000 people.

FAITH, HOPE & LOVE STORIES
July26

A few hundreds of tickets to the festival were given away to many underprivileged families all around the city.

The FHL hospital coffee shop is gaining in numbers of customers. Clarian North Hospital is inviting the local media to witness the presentation on Friday, July 28.

The Mayor of Greenwood, IN states, “…it seemed to me that it would be profitable for the community as a whole to come together in love and understanding for one another with the goal that will encourage each of us to bond in faith, hope and love as a healthy way for the good of all residents.”

Literally, there are hundreds of people in Indy receiving some kind of random kindness everyday. FHL is changing lives and transforming communities one day at a time.

Day 39 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray for the safety of all the team leaders and coordinators and their families from the North, South, East and West. (name each of your pastors and their families here) for their safety, peace and protection during this entire outreach. Pray Psalm 91 out loud for the entire region of Indiana/Indianapolis as a Psalm of protection.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty…….’ With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Ps 91

A second sniper foiled by prayer!

I have had the pleasure of guiding several of the praying faithful from among all the attendees of the Church of God’s (of Cleveland, TN) 71st International General Assembly this week. The first was a group of 80+ who joined me at our State House on Sunday to pray for our leaders just as 1 Timothy 2 directs us to. On Monday it was a smaller group where they distributed gift bags to leaders offices of the same building. Tuesday I had a group of 40 students of an average age of 16 again accompany me through our State House. They wanted to see the Chapel straight away and so we went.

I gave them a number of key focuses to pray for regarding our state and capital city. We prayed…I again gave them an additional focus to pray for regarding the sniper. This was the number one request by leaders at our state's capital. I explained that back in October of 2002 a number of locals from Virginia and I prayed for the immediate arrest of the Beltway Sniper. Just hours later John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo were found sleeping in their car at a Maryland rest stop, and arrested on federal weapons charges. I told them we are again asking for the same thing here.

After we finished our time at the Chapel we prayed from the observation balcony of the House regarding the existing injunction preventing the name of Christ being spoken during the daily invocation when the House is in session. We moved on to the Indiana Supreme Court with our thoughts on the definition of marriage being challenged in so many states like WA (Yeah!). Our next stop was at the office of Mitch Daniels. Mitch was in a meeting with his Chief of Staff so we simply prayed for him and his staff, his family and for leadership as a whole. I had hoped to stall the kids long enough to see Mitch as he made his way out for the day. We took pictures and I passed out posters of our legislature for the kids to hang on their prayer closet walls. Their time had expired and they were heading towards the door to make their way back to the convention center.

Just then Mitch appeared. He apologized for needing to leave right away only to spend a moment with us but he shared with us the news that the sniper had been caught! The kids celebrated!!! They told Mitch we had just prayed for that only and hour and a half before! They were so excited at what some would call a coincidence but these children knew otherwise. You see they didn’t want to leave anything to chance so they paused and honored their heavenly Father with a conversation that included a sniper that needed to get right with God and be brought to justice. Oh did I mention these kids were from Kentucky? They were more than happy to leave this gift of prayer behind to their new Hoosier friend, Governor Mitch Daniels.

Washington State Supreme Court upholds gay marriage ban

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Washington state's highest court upheld a ban on same-sex marriage on Wednesday, ruling by a 5-4 majority that the legislature had the power to limit marriage to one man and one woman. [continued at ABC News]

In Seattle, one of the key voices for morality is our friend known to many in the Greater Indianapolis area... Pastor Ken Hutcherson.

[The following is excerpted from Seattle PI article today...]

"Big Day in a Long Fight Over Same-sex Marriage"

In 2004, as gay couples in New York and California grabbed fleeting opportunities to marry, Hutcherson stood by, watching with a grimace. But when commissioners in Portland jumped on the bandwagon, he could hold back no longer.

The Antioch Bible Church pastor -- a former pro football player with a combative spirit -- has since gained national notice for rallying supporters against gay marriage. His Mayday for Marriage gatherings in Seattle and Washington, D.C., drew a combined 120,000 people. Later, Hutcherson testified in Olympia against including sexual orientation in anti-discrimination laws, and threatened to boycott Microsoft and other corporations for endorsing such statutes.

Intercessors 'Prayer Walk' the City

FAITH, HOPE & LOVE STORIES

July25

1. Castleton / Nora churches today were involved in a variety of outreaches; their FHL theme is “Flex and Flow”: Some mission projects were: At Miller Merry Manor serving lunch to the employees (and the elderly they serve everyday); also handing out flowers to the elderly; ice cream social in the assisted living area; people were invited to bring their talent to entertain, and to just hang out with the residents.
The Gleaners Food Pantry was set up in the parking lot of 1st Baptist Church; also handing out free snow cones to the children. One local community missionary who owns a farm and in the summer is seen driving a truckful of corn on the cob, delivered her corn to 8 different fire stations.
2. Carmel/Westfield/Zionsville area—lunch was delivered to policemen; the curbs at Carmel High are being painted (even by area youth from rival high schools!); an entire family took a day off from work to mulch trees together. And yours truly, the FHL media team, had the opportunity to meet and pray with a city urban forestry worker who is looking for a more long-term job and a place to live.
3. Southside—Tonight about 200 people gathered at New Hope Church in Greenwood to praise the Lord and then go out into the community to share God’s love through trimming bushes, painting, refurbishing a mobile home, distributing clothes, visiting a nursing home, cleaning restrooms, and in many other ways.
4. Noblesville/Fishers- The group today had 8 different churches, of all denominations represented at one location, over 25 missionaries being the hands & feet & heart of Christ. That included 3 senior pastors, many adults of all ages, part of a youth group, 1 college student, several retirees, and many families with young or no children! We had several languages being spoken. Above all this, there was a sense of unity, that we were all a part of one group - the family of Christ. I heard once that "Diversity is proof of the Holy Spirit at work in the world." We were diverse in age, culture, language, ability, skill, interest, and denomination! All working together to serve others in the name of Jesus Christ. THIS is faith in action!
5. Westside- The local community missionaries is the Westside did light construction and painting. Their number is increasing everyday.

"We are just so privileged that we are part of what God is doing in our communities".

FAITH, HOPE & LOVE STORIES

1. Noblesville/Fishers Area—Tranz skate park was open and free for any and all youth skaters; others on the team went to 3rd Phase Women’s Shelter.
2. Carmel/Westfield Area-Among several projects, local community missionaries provided refreshments and coffee to patients, guests and employees at Clarian North hospital-turned Café/Piano Bar. What a creative way to serve those in the hospital.
3. Southside Area-Some of the services/projects were light construction and bottled water give-away.
4. Westside Area-Did lawn care, weeding and edging.
5. IPS #74—10th & Rural Street—Newly assigned principal Tim Clevenger was on hand and told Faith, Hope and Love that the “wish list” the workers were following actually came from the school students themselves. Imagine their thrill when they return to school in August and see all of the beautiful work that has been done by those seeking to show God’s love in practical ways—mulching, weeding, beautifying flower beds, and many other practical things.
A few events that took place at IPS #74:
Ø The FHL 50' mobile prayer trailer was parked at School 74 for three hours too. Prayers were lifted to heaven. Answers began quickly. A few neighborhood residents arrived with their own equipment. Ready to take over the work, they asked the principal what they could do. He gladly directed their energies toward another playground project. Group Workcamps Foundation came to town with 100 teens from Tennessee, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan. One group was at IPS #74 to weed, mulch and beautify the grounds. Others will be serving the homeless, ministering at men’s and women’s shelters, helping at after-school programs, and giving some love to the elderly. Some of the Workcamps students have done this type of work before, but for many it is their first time. Everyone interviewed said they weren’t nervous or scared, just really excited!
Ø A neighborhood social worker happened to stop by to see what was happening. She was greatly encouraged to see people from the suburbs coming down to minister in her part of town. “These kids won’t forget this. And I don’t just mean the gardening. I mean they won’t forget that strangers came to their school and treated them like real people, and did something really nice for them.”
6. Castleton/Nora Area
As the group gathered back at Abundant Life on 82nd street near I-69, many were rejoicing at the hard work and the opportunity to refresh souls. They did a myriad of jobs . . . window washing, trash pick up, cleaning yards, visiting patients in the hospital, providing home repair, and even giving spa treatments to women!
Ø An older man who himself is a trash-collector, couldn’t believe a few young men were picking up trash and not being paid for it. The same story was repeated for the young gals who washed office windows.
Ø A 26-year-old man with two children who hasn’t been able to work for three months due a car accident was so grateful for those who mowed his lawn and cleaned his yard. He’s been wanting to connect to a church, and today he saw God removing some obstacles in his life.
Ø A 79-year-old man whose son is in hospice, with cancer, was so grateful for the prayer of the servant team at his home.
The response of those who received these offerings?— “How much does it cost?” “Why are you doing this?” “What church are you from?”
The answer: “Nothing; it’s free.” “To show God’s love in a practical way.” “Lots of different churches, all working together”!
One of FHL Area Coordinator, Shelly Smith stated, “Our volunteers (including many of the youth) can't wait to be able to help again tomorrow. Our God is Great!!!!”

Day 37 of FHL 40-day prayer

33 Pray that the bread and the water that we provide will remind the Faith, Hope and love participants that God loves them with a passion and will continue to feed them as He fed the 5,000.
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down. There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.” Matthew 6:10-11

Indy hosts Church of God 71st General Assembly

Indianapolis welcomes the Church of God (Cleveland, TN) 71st International General Assembly this week. Visit their site for ongoing details.

They also come bearing gifts... WATER... lots of water... for all our "Faith, Hope & Love" events this week.

And importantly... they bring PRAYER... for Indianapolis.

So we're thankful for our brothers & sisters from all over the world coming to Indy in this special week. Praise God. And 'Welcome'.

One of those brothers is well known to some of us involved in the 'cityreaching' movement... Doug Small.

Doug serves as president of Alive Ministries, and as director of Project Pray... leading prayer summits across the country. [Earlier this year, Doug led a youth prayer event here, bringing a number of youth to Indianapolis for the weekend to pray for our city & state.] He also serves as a State Prayer Leader for South Carolina, for the national Governors Prayer Team. In addition, Doug serves as a member of the City-Impact Roundtable, a division of Mission America and as a member of the National Prayer Committee.

Doug's book, "Transforming Your Church Into A House of Prayer" is now available. The book is full of practical ideas for enriching the prayer ministry of a local congregation. But it is more than an idea book. It is a challenge to bring prayer to the center of all the church does. To not create a prayer ministry, but to make every ministry a praying ministry!

FHL Community Prayer Walk

FHL JULY 23, 2009

What a great day!

Today, FHL started at ZPC then proceeded to the Monument Circle for Prayer Walk and Rally. The Prayer Trailer prayer team prayed for several people.

In downtown Indianapolis, the prayer walkers started 2 blocks from the 4 corners of the circle. We then walked around 7 times the circle.

Shofars then sounded the noise after the 7th time around the circle and hundreds of people made Joyful Noise.

We had Prayer rally and afterwards, we ate lots of pizza and bottled water was available the rest of the day. The Outreach Team gave away boxes of pizza to everyone around the monument circle.

The Prayer Trailer ended at the Concert at The Fountain Square in Carmel. Carmel Attorney General spoke in front of the crowd on behalf of FHL and read the Proclamation that July 23-29 is FHL day for the City of Carmel.

Praise the Lord!

Day 36 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray that the mutual indwelling of the Father in the Son and the Son in the church is also the means of unity. Pray for spiritual oneness, that all believers will be united in love and grace, just as the Father and Son are one. That FHL week will be a tangible expression of this unity.
John 17:22-23,” I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me”.

A nice lady called to query one of the daughters about six potential baby-sitting dates. When I told her the daughter was not home, she asked if I would like to write the dates down. I probably seemed rude when I said no. It’ s not that I wouldn’t take a message. It’s that...

33 Pray that Conseco field house will be filled to maximum capacity and that we will have enough food, water, T shirts etc to give away; that the Faith, Hope and Love team members from various churches will work together in unison and that our steps will be ordered of the Lord.
"Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Col.3:13-14

Faith, Hope and Love Community Prayer Walk 2006

The Faith, Hope and Love Community Prayer Walk is to usher in God’s Presence into metropolitan Indianapolis. Only the Lord knows exactly the plan He has for this historic event on July 23, 2006. The FHL local community missionaries will wear their official FHL t-shirts as they show the community the love of God.

These prayer team leaders will gather at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis at 1:30 p.m. for corporate prayer. They will then proceed to the four corners of the Circle. The North team will meet at the corner of N Meridian and New York St and pray at the War Memorial; the East team will meet at the corner of E Market and S Delaware St and pray for Conseco Fieldhouse; the West team will meet at the corner of W Market and Capitol and will pray for the State Capitol building; and the South team will meet at the corner of S Meridian and Maryland and will pray for Eli Lilly & Company and other businesses along South Meridian.

At 2:30 p.m., the Prayer Team leaders of each group will organize, register and coordinate the teams two blocks from the Circle for group prayer in the north, south, west and east corners. Instructions and prayer guidelines will be distributed at this time. The walk will officially begin at 3 p.m. by the sounding of the Shofar, a Jewish horn used symbolically in Biblical times. All groups will start walking directly toward the Circle.

Walkers will then walk toward the downtown Monument, the center of downtown Indianapolis, and then walk seven times quietly around the Monument starting at the south side of the Monument. Once everyone has finished their seven rotations, instruments will sound in celebration as we “Make a Joyful Noise!”

Day 34 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray that John 3:16 will be the Banner that flies high over the Circle City as we march together and that God will receive the glory for sending His son to die for us.

God's Word

The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

Galatians 5:14
NIV

Day 33 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray that our acts of kindness will open up the floodgates for others to come into His kingdom; that random acts of service will occur in and throughout the city of Indianapolis; that God will provide for us a Wave of Peace as we keep our mind steadfast and trust in Him alone.
We have a strong city; God makes salvation its walls and ramparts. Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, the nation that keeps faith. You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord is the Rock eternal. Isaiah 26:1-4

Youth Rally for Peace

[from the Lt. Governor's office...]

"On Tuesday, I was pleased to participate in the youth rally, "Peace in the Streets," on the circle in downtown Indianapolis. Although we focused on combating violent crime in this urban community, violence is a problem in our rural communities, as well.

It was significant that supporters at the rally included motivated young men and women, parents, religious leaders, community leaders, law enforcement, and elected officials. Government alone will never be able to stem the tide of violence. It takes a shared commitment within the community to make a difference. Tuesday's rally was a beginning, but it is an effort worthy of support across our great state."

Because thine heart was tender...

2 Chronicles 34:1-2 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years. 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

2 Chronicles 34:26-27 And as for the king of Judah [Josiah], who sent you to enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard; 27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.
=======================
God hears us when we cry out to Him. He is here to hold up our feeble arms and strengthen our feeble knees. God knows what we need before we even cry out...

King Josiah, in 2Chronicles 34 is a great example of someone who sought the Lord, recognized that God is in control and submitted himself under God’s Lordship. Josiah “did that which was right in the sight of the Lord” meaning he obeyed God. In verses 26 & 27 we see that Josiah also had a tender and humble heart towards God – it’s very important that we see we can’t just follow the rules and be in a “right relationship” with God, our hearts must be tender towards Him and humble allowing Him to be not only our Lord, but our Master.

The flip side is true as well, we can’t say we have a tender and humble heart towards God and not walk in obedience to His commands which are to love God with our heart, mind, soul, & strength and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We can’t have a tender heart towards God and hate our neighbor or be worshipping the gods of this world (our job, money, stuff, and even ourselves in the form of selfishness – see Phil 2).

Josiah was looked upon by God as righteous because he walked in faith and his faith led him to faithfulness. God honors our faith, we are saved by faith, and as we grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, as we read and grow in the Word of God (the Bible) our faith grows. When we walk by faith, we too will do that which is right in the sight of the Lord. As our faith grows our heart will become tenderer. As our heart is tender, we will walk faithfully in obedience. It’s a positive cycle called discipleship, sanctification and growing in the grace of God...it’s the ideal Christian walk!

Pray with me that we walk by faith with tender hearts towards God...

Day 32 of FHL 40-day prayer

Psalm 115:1, “Not to us o Lord, not to us, but to your Name be the glory”.
Pray that we keep our humble hearts focused on Jesus and not to our own strength and accomplishment. This is His ministry and we are privileged to be part of it.

Day 31 of FHL 40-day prayer

1 Cor. 13:13, "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."
Pray that in everything that we do, we do it out of our love for God and for our neighbors.

Day 30 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray that the Word of God will be exemplified in all that we do. Pray that His word will produce a harvest of righteousness, peace and joy and that many will be brought into the kingdom as a result of Faith, Hope and Love week.
As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sewer and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth; It will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55: 10-11

"Oh Little Town Of...."

"Nazareth"????

LOLLLLL.

Major news leader CNN broke some startling 2,000 year-old news today. Jesus was apparently born in Nazareth.

Obviously it was simply an error by reporters & editors covering the historic land of Israel... albeit with limited expertise. [But didn't they ever hear any Christmas carols even?]

Btw, CNN has apparently refused to take the journalistic high road by issuing a retraction. Instead, they simply edited it quietly. For now.

Have our educators and judges perhaps been too quick to pull the creche from textbooks and from public view?

Guess we'll see if Leno mercilessly picks on CNN tonight like he does GW every night. LOL.

Indianapolis women... a question from San Diego

Email from a reader...

"Hello from San Diego.

I located your indychristian.com website while attempting to help a women from Indianapolis who emailed this morning inquiring about our organization, Professional Women’s Fellowship in San Diego (http://www.pwfsd.org/). She had found our site and asked if there was something similar in your area.

Not knowing of one, I “googled” and came up with your information.

PWF is an association of San Diego County Christian women who are professionals and/or in business, community or ministry leadership, and who connect for fellowship, challenge, learning, encouragement, service, and networking. We hold regular monthly meetings, weekly Bible studies in several locations throughout the county, an annual retreat, workshops, social events, and other activities.

PWF members and friends support and participate in a variety of community outreach programs and service projects, including GRACE Talks, a class for the resident women of the San Diego Rescue Mission led by PWF. Our 2005 Christmas project provided gifts to local children through Prison Fellowship's Angel Tree program. In addition, over a number of ministries and charities are led by PWF members who we encourage and support.

We encourage our members and friends to access the prayer chain, career moves/job line, and other available resources, and we serve as an arm of many local churches who have no specific outreach to women in business and professional leadership. Our contact circle includes about 500 women here in San Diego County.

Being aware of other PWFs and similar organizations in other cities but not in Indianapolis, I’m seeking your help in locating one. I will appreciate any assistance you can provide.

In Christ,
Anne"

Study: City ranked high in services that foster poverty

"Indianapolis prides itself on being among the most affordable large cities in the nation, but that low-cost living does not always include the city's working poor."

[continued at IndyStar.com]

[Read the Brookings Institute study report]

God's Word

Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you.

Luke 11:34-36

Reliance upon the Lord

2 Chronicles 16:7-9 And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said unto him, Because thou hast relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on the LORD thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thine hand. 8 Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubims a huge host, with very many chariots and horsemen? yet, because thou didst rely on the LORD, he delivered them into thine hand. 9 For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

=======================

We find the story of Asa in 2Chronicles, chapter 16. Asa was a good king...he led Judah well, he destroyed the idols and tore down the high places of worship, and he relied upon the Lord until he was comfortable in his success. THEN, he began to rely upon himself – he made an alliance with the king of Syria to perform a desired result instead of seeking God, His counsel and His wisdom and following His plan.

The result of Asa’s actions was to reap what HE had sown...the natural consequences of our actions are sometimes much harsher than we anticipate. God, who is outside of time, knows not only our actions but the results and desires the best for us...thus wisdom dictates that we should follow the counsel of God over the counsel of men (including our own counsel).

God, gives us great reason to follow HIM...in 2Chron 16:9 we see God speaking through the prophet Hanani to Asa who tells him (and us) that God is looking for men and women whose heart is perfect toward Him so that He can show Himself strong to them. This means that if we are seeking Him and His leading for our lives, He’ll not only give us counsel but He will be our strength!

If God is desirous of leading us and guiding us and has the best for our lives foremost in His mind, shouldn’t we be humble enough (and wise enough) to let Him? Doesn’t God, who is outside of time, who sees all, who knows all, & who is all powerful has a little more insight into our lives than we. Wouldn’t it seem a lot foolish to tell our creator and the creator of the universe that we don’t need His help as we can “take it from here”?

Pray with me that our hearts are perfect towards God and that we let Him show Himself strong on our behalf...

God's Word

Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

God's Word

Not everyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord," will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 7:21
NIV

A Willing Heart

1 Chronicles 21:24 And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
==================
We have a picture of what God desires from us as far as sacrifice… in 1Chronicles, chapter 21, David is told by the Lord to go and build an altar to Him at Ornan’s threshing floor to stop a plague caused by David’s sin. When David asks Ornan for his land, etc., Ornan tells David he can have it, but David replies with verse 24: that he will not give to the Lord that which does not come by cost to him.

This is a picture for us to learn from – God doesn’t want from us what doesn’t cost us anything. He wants what costs us EVERYTHING! He wants our lives. If we really want to go to that “next step” in our walk with God, in our fellowship and intimacy with the creator of the Universe, God wants what will cost us the most – our hearts!

Picture a father with his little child. He wants the child to hug him but the child won’t until disciplined severely – that hug now doesn’t mean much to the father, does it? In the same way, God doesn’t want us to give what we have to him grudgingly – He wants it willingly. If we desire to give our all to our Father in Heaven in response to His goodness, we must give God our hearts, our lives, and all that we are from a pure heart and a desire to please Him.

The cost to us, if we want to follow hard after God, if we want to be in that “place” where He will use us, is that which is most costly of all – our will. Giving up our heart and our life means giving up our will for our lives and allowing God to take control. It means allowing God to direct our steps and lead us wherever He desires. The cost for us is to willing lay our lives on the altar of sacrifice as our reasonable service because of ALL that God has done for us.

Pray with me that we see God’s goodness and count the cost of our lives as a worthy sacrifice to Him…

Tony Perkins provides Washington update for Indy pastors

Crossroads Bible College serves Indianapolis and the world, by training Christian leaders... i.e, pastors, counselors and lay men & women... to 'reach a multi-ethnic urban world for Christ'.

Tony Perkins

Today Crossroads hosted a luncheon, with Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council, Washington D.C. The luncheon was co-sponsored locally by American Family Association of Indiana, and Indiana Family Institute.

Tony carried the message of the FRC [as stated at their website]...

"We believe that America's pastors and churches are the keys to the survival and revival of our nation. More and more, we are gearing the efforts of the FRC, and producing tools to help pastors and churches do what only they can do to bring transformation to our culture, including the public policy arena. As a pastor, whether your church is large or small God has given you power and authority to make big changes in our country through preaching, prayer and teaching your people how to be active, wise and faithful Christian citizens."

He encouraged pastors to...

  • Pray
  • Hold a "Citizenship Sunday"
  • Multiply your impact. Find 12 other pastors to do likewise.

The FRC now specially provides resources especially for pastors...

Visit the "Pastors Portal" at the Family Research Council's site.

God's Word

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

Habakkuk 2:14
NIV

Day 24 of FHL 40-day prayer

1 Kings 18:36-39, "At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again."
Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, "The LORD -he is God! The LORD -he is God!"

Pray that the idol gods of our city will no longer have an entry point to destroy family life; that drugs, alcohol, illicit sexual activity, prostitution, greed, envy, jealousy, pride, malice, and all willful acts of violence and murder will be thwarted by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; That the Crucified One will enter into the battle alone and bring forth the Victory.

Day 23 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray that the sins of our city will be called to mind during our prayer walk that we might repent and confess of our sins as a corporate body; that the Spirit who resides within us will pray great prayers of repentance and that holiness, purity, and godliness will be restored to the North, South, East and West.

Day 22 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray, “Lord we ask that the Spirit of Praise and Worship will accompany us on our journey as we walk hand in hand during the prayer walk. We ask that our joyous refrain can be heard round the world; that our hearts and our minds will be focused upon the Crucified One, who died for our sins, then rose again defeating the enemy.”

Day 21 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray that the news media, television stations, newspapers and magazines will truly reflect the purpose of God in the Faith, Hope and Love outreach; that we may be seen as a united body, serving the Lord, in joyous praise and adoration because we love Him. We pray that there will be no slanderous accusation from any public official or group that would stand against us. We pray that God’s kind favor would rest upon us till His work is completed.

"And he must needs go through Samaria."

[From John chapter 4] "And then He goes on in verse 3 and says, And He needed to go through Samaria. Now wait a minute, Jews did not go through Samaria. But He needed to. They had a little thing I like to call a "465". See it was very simple to go straight through. You could go right through to where He was going but they had a thing I call the 465. The Jews just went around because they didn't go to Samaria."

"The idea that we have that lets pray for the black church to do their thing and let's pray for people to get saved but we are not a part of that and let's pray for the white church but let's not communicate. See we are dividing and we are building on the division instead of unity.

See there's something about Jacob's well. It was a place where each of them could identify with because the Jews knew that the convenant had been cut with Abraham Isaac and Jacob and the Samaritan people believed the Pentateuch and so they also honored Jacob. It was a place they both could identify with. They both honored Jacob. He didn't meet her at a place where there was division. It was a place where they could have unity. He brought them to a spiritual place where they could have identity and common ground.

The only way we will build a multi-cultural church is by common ground. Most division starts with disagreement but Jesus started with what where they agreed. The other amazing thing is that Jesus didn't give up who He was to reach her. He didn't go into to town and buy Samaritan clothes and try and look like a Samaritan to reach her. He was Jewish and He knew who He was and He wasn't going to give up who He was. I don't have to act like you or look like you but we are going to do this on our common ground. I am so sick and tired of church leaders saying you will only reach who you are. That's not true."

"You'll reach who you love."

Day 20 of FHL 40-day prayer

Pray that no denominational barriers will prevent us from accomplishing His Perfect will and purpose for the week of Faith, Hope and Love. May no one Denomination takes center stage; and that the participants will join with one Another hand in hand to lift up the Name above all names; Jesus Christ.
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by the deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:22

God called to Moses from the burning bush,” Moses, Moses.” And Moses said here I am.” “Do not come any closer, “God said. “Take off your sandals for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:4-5
