Short week... Friday's CCDA mtg coming quickly...

Everyone... Don't forget Friday morning's 'Host City' team meeting, 8 a.m. at the cafe. [UnleavenedBreadCafe.org at 30th x Central] Come early if you like.... Eat and enjoy extra time together. Cafe opens at 7am. Everyone welcome. Let's pray & plan together, and see what God will do.

Btw, CCDA (national) has just upgraded their website -- it's great. Check it out.

And of course, regularly stay in touch with our CCDAindy.org site. It is constantly improving (and is awesome!) as we move closer and closer to November's convention here.

"I'm doing pretty well in my clinical medicine class. Thanks for asking.

Of course, I'm not the student; I'm the passive patient. The husband also is drafted into the role of patient whenever a certain college student we are related to happens to be at home.

It's not all bad. At least we get to skip the 45-minute snooze in the waiting room and outdated magazines.

On the other hand, it is often startling... "

God's Word

But no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.

Memorial Day....

"Memorial Day has traditionally been a day of remembering the many heroes who lost their lives during the Civil War and other wars in which the United States has been involved. However, for many it is also a time to honor all loved ones who have passed on before us, and as U.S. troops remain stationed throughout the world, remember their service to their country and its freedom. This informative collection of articles and resources will help you understand the purpose of Memorial Day and the faithfulness of God." [continued at Christianity Today]

Books and Authors That Have Most Influenced Pastors

"(Ventura, CA) – Books sales and book influence are two different factors. While bestseller lists identify the books that generate the greatest revenue, a new survey by The Barna Group, conducted among a nationwide, representative sample of Protestant pastors, shows that the most influential books often fail to reach the bestseller lists. That’s one of several key findings drawn from the list of books that pastors say have influenced them the most in the past three years. The survey also found that a relative handful of authors have the most consistent influence on pastors, and that a dozen or so books have had the most widespread impact during that time frame.

When pastors were asked to identify the three books that had been most helpful to them as a ministry leader during the past three years more than..." [continued at Barna.org]

Magical Month of May?

What we don't talk about on Memorial Day...

The Bible-believing Christian community here in Indy is (hopefully) lovingly bound together by a common understanding from the scriptures of the good news of the Gospel. Yet from those core beliefs, we've then fanned out into a myriad of well-studied, finer understandings we've come to hold... and which distinguish us. But in the interests of love, harmony and the desire to know God's truth more adequately ourselves, we need to humbly & often go the extra mile... climb out of our 'box'... in an attempt to learn about something from brothers & sisters who have come to believe differently on some matters. We open ourselves to possibly gaining a sharper understanding of scripture.... not to mention, new friends. And at the very least, we honor each other by listening to things they hold near & dear.

In that light, I encourage you to continue to 'BikeHiker', and try to understand how some Bible-believing Christians view Memorial Day. [continued]

Welcome to Indy...

For those of you who might be visiting Indianapolis this weekend... Welcome. We hope you'll find Indy as enjoyable as we have.

I personally remember my first few days here in Indy. I was out driving on I-465, and we came to a construction are where 4 lanes narrowed to one. Hoosiers were waving each other in, in front of them... and I thought... "What planet are these people from???" LOL. And we quickly discovered, they're all from the planet of 'Nice'. We hope you'll find them to be as warm and welcoming as we did.

If you'd like to engage the great folks here, consider yourself warmly invited to any of the many and various types of Bible-believing churches in the area. Click on any of the 9-counties mapped below, to see some fine churches, and especially those that purpose to work together to help make our community what it is today. And if you'd like to look around IndyChristian.com, please do so -- we don't call it NewLifeInTheFastLane.com for nothin'. It's very much about connecting 'driven Christians'.

Enjoy your weekend in the Racing Capital of the World.

Civil authorities stepped in with common sense

Commentary, Neil Cox, IndyChristian.com

Earthly authorities have been placed here by God to maintain civil order in a fallen world. That is, when our (including parental) acts conflict with good, reasonable practices -- especially when looking out for the interests of the most vulnerable -- these authorities are obligated to step in.

We saw one such 'authority' -- a jury of our peers -- recently act to say that a baby wasn't adequately protected when parents failed to pursue medical treatment.

And we have just now seen a judge act on behalf of boy whose parents positioned him for stress by placing him in a parochial school yet teaching him in extremely opposite ways at home.

Common sense sides with the civil authorities in both cases. How many of us, as parents, would even begin to think of doing otherwise, if it were our children in either of these cases?

Civil authorities have to act when parents' common sense (heaven forbid we'd mention Godly principles) fail to protect the vulnerable.

[Comment: However, to be equal-handed here, please know that the Indianapolis Star editorial staff have reached an opposite conclusion re the Wicca case. And a further 'news article' today clearly reflects that bias.]

"Where have all the witches gone?"

Dan & Agusta Harting
Families Against Cults
Indianapolis, Indiana

"The [1993 Indianapolis Star] article did not describe Witchcraft as anything to worry about. Rather, it was viewed as something quite positive. It seemed to promote the idea that Witches were not only perfectly normal, but that they were to be admired."

"However, all Neo-Pagans do not want to classify themselves as "Witches", even though they whole-heartedly approve of and welcome witchcraft in all its forms. Thus you can say that most occultists, Wiccans (Witches), Neo-Pagans, Goddess worshippers and a host of New Agers are a kind of tandem system, which operates for the most part on the same bases of doctrines. Most, for instance..."

Area churches are planning weeklong mission work in their neighborhoods in July

"A weeklong "Festival of Faith, Hope and Love" will join clergy and laity from seven churches on a mission trip into their Far Northside and Northeastside neighborhoods.

Greg Smith

Why, Greg?

"It started with Biometrics in the hope that improved security for locking our most private health care records could be created. Unfortunately the focus now has shifted to educating and influencing those involved with securing our Electronic Health Records, EHR, in hopes that good moral and ethical values will be applied. For everyone, you need to know what the future holds so that you may have a chance to protect your most private identity."

Darwin's Theory evolves into culture war...

photo, Reuters

"According to a November national Gallup poll, "only about a third of Americans believe that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is a scientific theory that has been well supported by the evidence, while just as many say that it is just one of many theories and has not been supported by the evidence." The rest said they didn't know.

A CBS News poll taken the same month found that two-thirds of Americans want creationism taught with evolution. It also indicated that 55 percent of Americans believe God created humans in their present form and only 13 percent think that humans evolved without divine guidance." [continued at Chicago Tribune]

PETERSBURG - Ken Ham wants to save your soul.

He's so bent on that mission that he has spent 11 years in Northern Kentucky creating a museum to answer one of the most debated questions of our time:

When and how did life begin?

Soon, visitors to Ham's still-unfinished Creation Museum will experience his view: that God created the world in six, 24-hour days on a planet just 6,000 years old. This literal interpretation of the Bible runs counter to accepted scientific theory, which says Earth and its life forms evolved over billions of years.

Undaunted by considerable opponents, Ham's Answers in Genesis ministry is building a $25 million monument to creationism. The largest museum of its kind in the world, it hopes to draw 600,000 people from the Midwest and beyond in its first year.

"When that museum is finished, it's going to be..." [continued at Cincinnati Enquirer]

Master Site Plan Takes Shape....

[Come along to Brown County, to see some things Greater Indianapolis Christians are involved with...]

"Its the result of many hours of work by a number of volunteer professionals,” says lead draftsman, Jeff Pitts, of New Song’s Master Site Plan. Pitts, a landscape architect with Interdesign of Indianapolis, is spearheading the project, which has included input from civil engineers, surveyors, general contractors and others.

According to New Song’s Executive Director, Bob Schloss, the plan has its very roots in children. “We’ve focused on kids from the very beginning, even including them in on the early stages of the plan’s development,” Schloss shared. “What matters the most in the end is whether children feel at home, loved and well cared for.”

Schloss’s words are born out in site plan details. A three acre fishing pond, horse coral, and soccer field are located in the middle of the unique neighborhood. Kids will walk by the horses on their way to school, which is located toward the main entrance of the campus. Homes will be spread out on the back 83 acre track on the other side of a classic Brown County creek..."

The Vision of New Song Mission:

In response to Christ’s calling, New Song Mission offers loving, lifelong homes and a private education for young children whose prospects are severely threatened by dysfunctional family situations. The New Song approach represents a proven alternative to Indiana’s financially hamstrung child care system, and fantastic news for children who deserve a second chance at childhood. [continued]

Indiana Christian News -- 2nd Anniversary

To our friends at the Indiana Christian News on their Second Anniversary:

It would be hard to over-estimate the value of having a solid Christian newspaper in the city.

Reflecting back to New Year's Eve, 2002... some friends among the Transform Indiana network got together to enjoy fellowship time, praising God and praying in the new year... asking Him to bless our cities above and beyond our efforts of faith... that is, to work 'extraordinarily' in our midst... and promising Him we'd be quick to give Him the praise.

I thank God regularly now for one such extraordinary blessing He gave Indiana that year -- the 2003 start-up of Indiana Christian News.

At the time we were praying, none of us knew Sam & Kelly, nor did we have any idea what God had in store. But what a surprise blessing the paper has been -- researching and reporting stories to which area Christians would not otherwise have access. Helping each of us learn about other great ministries & businesses. Committing resources to great collaborative events like Faith Fest and the recent Indiana Christian Expo. And providing energy to spark new efforts of faith by your many readers across Central Indiana.

Moreover, the publication is theologically diverse, yet stalwart on the core tenets of the faith, and regularly seeks to put that faith into print... and action.

So congratulations on your 2nd anniversary... Sam, Kelly and all the fine writers and expediters... at Indiana Christian News. We praise God for all of you.

When, btw will the fractured Church of Jesus Christ rise up together, after kneeling in repentance as we see our complicity in such matters because of the lack of an accountability structure consisting of wise, qualified elders representing the larger 'body of Christ' in a community? Dare anyone write one pen-stroke about this? If so, leave a comment, or indicate your blog-url.]

God's Word

Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever.

No more options in Depauw case...

[excerpts from Agape Press]

"A Christian educator has run out of legal options in her religious discrimination case against United Methodist-affiliated DePauw University."

"Earlier this month, the Indiana Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal filed by Janis Price, education program coordinator at DePauw, who claims the university violated her First Amendment rights and created a hostile work environment. The university had cut her pay, stripped her of all her titles, suspended her teaching duties, and placed her on probation for making Christian magazines available in her classroom."

"In January, a three-judge panel of the Indiana Court of Appeals overturned a jury verdict in favor of Price. One of the panel members, Judge Terry Crone, is a DePauw alumnus -- a fact price feels should have forced the judge to recuse himself from the case."

Neighborhood Stories?

We're looking for some stories about the effectiveness of small groups, Bible-study groups, care groups, etc. which meet in particular neighborhoods, and may be particularly focused on enhancing the spiritual side of 'community'. Or maybe they're hands-on, neighbors helping neighbors. Is your small group making a difference in your community as a result of meeting, praying and working together?

If you know of such groups in the Greater Indianapolis area... we'd enjoy hearing from you.

Church Feeds?

I know, I know. What a concept.

We'd actually be able then to AGGREGATE feeds from (Bible-believing) churches & ministries.

[Why Feed RSS to the Aggregators?]

Btw, our aggregated site for individual Indianapolis Christian bloggers (IndyBloggers.com) is working great. So why not an aggregated CHURCHES site?

I poked around at that possibility yesterday with an innovative, blogging pastor from another Indiana city. He knew of no such churches. Nor do I.

So the race is on. Which Greater Indianapolis church will be the first to provide an RSS feed from their ministry site, for us to easily know "What's News at YOUR Church?"

To qualify for auto-aggregating your church's feed (or ministry's feed), we simply ask that your church site include a reciprocal link to IndyChristian.com. And we'll do the same.

Email us.

"It's no longer about a church web SITE.
It's about the Church's web STRATEGY."

Is Intelligent Design 'Science'?

You're not in Kansas, anymore.

But the Kansas controversy going on right now has far-reaching implications -- even to Indiana.

Here's a great overview at the Christian Post.... "Q & A: What Is Intelligent Design?"

And to tap into the blogosphere conversation, check out the controversy in motion at World Magazine's Blog.

Now set your calendars for May 23rd, when Creationist Ken Ham comes to Indy, to teach at Crossroads Bible College. Here are the details at AnswersInGenesis.org.

Treasure Hunting In Indy...

[Another great article by Pam Sheppard]

"Pastor Jim Thurston of the Indy Dream Center International Church and Outreach is a treasure hunter. But it’s not the kind of treasure that most people think of when they hear the word. His treasures are hidden. Hidden under bridges, in abandoned buildings, in dark alleys, and even in... [continued at Indy Dream Center]

"My Students' Blogs"

Gotta love this one... "My Students' Blogs" -- an article/post/challenge/gauntlet **LOL** from our collaborative writer-friend from BrightMystery, here in Indy...

Robert Talbert, BrightMystery

"There was a back-page article in the student newspaper here at Franklin a couple of weeks ago highlighting students who have blogs. I knew that a lot of students here are aware of the blogosphere, that several students are regular readers of this blog, and that..." [continue his main article here]

God's Word

I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know there is none besides me. I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things.

Expo Blogging?

Just a quick salute to Sam & Kelly Gaw and all the folks involved with making the (1st) Indiana Christian Expo a great event.

[I only wish I'd planned ahead, and been able to spend more time there. Next year, we're going to want to be sure to be there with a Bloggers' Corner!]

We praise God for the Indiana Christian News and all their staff, volunteers & advertisers making this collaborative event possible.

May God continue to bless our city because of all their efforts of faith.

Senator calls President 'a loser'...

Opinion: Neil Cox, IndyChristian.com

Read the comments of 'Washington's top democrat'.

So much for toning down the rhetoric, Tim.

[...unless of course, you argue that at least this Democratic senator didn't refer to him as the 'anti-Christ'.]

Excerpting:

"In the course of a discussion on filibusters and Senate rules, Washington's top Democrat gave the 60 juniors a lesson in partisan politics, particularly about the commander in chief. "The man's father is a wonderful human being," Reid said in response to a question about President Bush's policies. "I think this guy is a loser..."

"After the statement was released, Reid phoned the Review-Journal to acknowledge he thought he crossed the line. "You know the president is in Europe, probably sleeping," Reid said in an interview this afternoon. "But I called (Karl) Rove and apologized for what I said."

Already sounding like a kid in a school yard, you can only imagine how that 'apology' went.

Surely Tim, irrespective of the issue at hand --whether the President's judicial nominees are eventually entitled to a simple up-or-down vote -- to be fair, wouldn't you have to agree that the 'rhetoric' is heavily lopsided these days?

And yes, lopsided or not, Christians are called to a higher standard than that demonstrated by Senators Reid, Salazar, and former vice-president Gore.

God's Word

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2

Church Buses Needed... for Sat. Nov. 19th

YOUR church buses are needed... to help transport city visitors... on ministry tours... Saturday, Nov. 19th, when the national CCDA convention is here in Indy. It's a great city-opportunity to TOGETHER lift up the name of Christ as we escort people to great hands-on ministries around our city.

If your church can help, contact Gina Lewis (Oasis of Hope) or Eric Howard (Outreach, Inc.).

Indiana Christian Expo... Today/Tomorrow...

Christians... What an opportunity for $5. This is a MUST SEE. (IMHO)

[Congrats to Sam and all the folks involved in putting this things together! We'll be there at the convention center to see -- and maybe 'blog' -- some of your events... and business & ministries booths. May God specially bless your efforts of faith.]

God's Word

You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Loveyour enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Matthew 5:38-45 NIV

Tooley at Half-Time...

"My thirty-fifth birthday was a somewhat difficult milestone in my life. I began to realize that if the average age of a man is 70, then I was at half time and I needed to evaluate the first half of this game of life and develop a plan for the second half. I know, some of you think I watch too much football. The reality is that I began to think hard about the "dash" of my life. You know that dash on the tombstone that goes between the year you were born and the year you die. I wanted to know..."
