God's Word

So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him." Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him. To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

God's Word

LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill? He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman, who despises a vile man but honors those who fear the LORD, who keeps his oath even when it hurts, who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.

God's Word

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. his is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

Thus this post about a helpful rap video caught my eye as did this post (and ensuing comments) which portray many people's thoughts about abortion.

Transformation: Microwaving or Marinating?

[Tony is representative of the folks coming to Indy in November for the national CCDA Convention -- Bible-believing leaders who through the power of the Holy Spirit are changing lives & communities. ]

Pray Until Something Happens!
By Tony Danhelka

We have not chosen a quick-fix, problem-free profession. Christian community development involves confronting and rebuilding the systems that have degraded people for decades. The development process takes time. We have all watched the coming and going of staff, donors, volunteers and families we serve. We have taken on the “powers that be” and attempted multiple solutions that sometimes fall short. All too often the cycles of poverty overwhelm us and drive us to our knees in prayer. That’s a good place to be.

After all, we are really in the transformation business. God has called us to engage the families living in economically stressed communities with practical demonstrations of the power of the Gospel of Christ. But, why can’t we see transformation happen faster?

We have all spent many hours and days imploring God to hasten personal and community transformation, but the Bible indicates that God is often not in a hurry. He takes all the time needed to build our character in the transformation process. Noah prayed his way through the process of building the Ark for 100 years. Abraham prayed 25 years for the son God promised before the miraculous birth. Moses prayed for 40 years to reach the Promised Land. Daniel prayed three times a day for 70 years before he saw the exiles begin returning to Israel. Paul and millions of missionaries after him prayed and strived for the salvation of the nations, but many areas are still unreached by the Gospel. These servants of the Lord prayed long and worked hard until the breakthrough came.

One pastor told me, “We are into microwaving, but God is into marinating!” Though the pace is fast and the demands are great, we more than ever need to be a people of persistent prayer, resilient in our travail. We need to soak our callings, projects and families with prayer until we see God’s hand move.

Perseverance in prayer calls for moral character and Holy Spirit power. Jesus taught his disciples a mighty lesson about the persistent widow in Luke 18:1-8 to show them they should always pray and not give up. We often don’t understand the bigger picture as God leads us into a mission. We pray and work for the breakthrough of finances, volunteers, professional help, building skills or whatever is needed. We start out praying and working toward the goal but then fall short in our prayers because of the mammoth demands before us.

In these times of discouragement, invite the Holy Spirit to teach you how to pray about the challenge before you. Then listen and rest—He will speak. Ask the Holy Spirit to pray through you when you are dry. He will refresh you or change you. Praise Him throughout the process. Fast from food at times, telling your body that your spirit is in charge and that you hunger and thirst after God. When you break the fast, pray for breakthrough in your mission. Pray in the morning, and pray at night or through the night. Pray with like-minded friends in Christ. In God’s time, the breakthrough will happen.

CCDA member ministries are a living testimony that God answers persistent, resilient prayer. Homes have been restored, communities rebuilt, businesses established, churches planted, and most of all people transformed. We need to speak up when we see breakthrough in our community development in order to encourage those still praying, waiting and working. Let’s remind each other that we can feed, clothe, and teach people, but only God can transform them into new creations in Christ.

Oasis 2005 -- Sept. 22-24

"We are at a critical point in the history of our witness to the Muslim world. Christians in North America are now face-to-face with a large Muslim population. God has given us a tremendous opportunity to reach them with the love and peace of Christ that previous generations only dreamed about. But are we ready? How can we effectively communicate the gospel to our Muslim neighbors? Oasis 2005 will give you practical training and resources to help your church reach out to the local Muslim community."

God's Word

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: `Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: `Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."

Blog columns, like people, sometimes can't get along.

LOL.

Actually, this short article is simply a behind-the-scenes, little-known blogging tip I've discovered, regarding why Blogger.com acts strangely at times... like earlier today at IndyChristian.com, when the 2 columns got 'out of sorts' and just couldn't seem to get along side-by-side.

I've found that happens anytime something in one column or the other gets 'too big for its britches' -- ie, it gets 'too wide' and starts encroaching on the other column's 'space'.

Sorta like people at times, I suppose.

Another Katrina trip... launching from the Nora area...

[hat-tip, Melissa, for passing this tip along via email]

From Steve Clark...

"Hurricane Katrina has had an effect on us all. From images seen on TV to stories of those that have gone to help, it is apparent that help and relief will be needed for years to come.

This Thursday a group of 15 of us from Nora Christian Fellowship will be heading down to the Biloxi Mississippi area to continue spreading the relief effort to those affected by Hurricane Katrina. We know that we won't make a scratch in the overall needs, but if we can directly help several families or churches begin to rebuild their lives, then it is worth it. We have had groups from our church continually going down to the Gulfport - Biloxi area, bringing water, food, clothes, diapers, etc. Aaron Wilson, one of our leaders, had been put in charge of scouting areas for semi’s to unload supplies gathered by Traders Point, Grace, and other local churches because of his experience of being down there since the storm hit. The response from these and other churches all over America have been overwhelming with Semi after Semi delivering supplies!

Thankfully there is an abundance of food and water in this area and the need is to now begin repairing and rebuilding churches, homes, and schools in the affected areas. There are several items that are in much need in the area to help clean and rebuild.

Items needed are:
Plastic Tarps - many!
Laundry Detergent
Mops / Brooms / Buckets>Bleach / Cleaners / Spray Bottles>Rubber Gloves

If you can help, please drop these items off by Thursday 2p at Nora Christian Fellowship located at 465 E 86th St - located on 86th st between Meridian and College on the South side of the street. If you would like to make a money donation that is tax deductible and will be used to buy supplies, it can be made out to Nora Christian - post marked, Disaster Relief. You can also call me and I can have the supplies picked up from your home or business. If you can't make a donation in time but are still interested, please do so, other groups will be going down in the coming weeks.>>We are leaving this THURSDAY at 2pm and will be returning on Monday. Your gifts and donations will be hand delivered this week to people in much need of help. Thank you for your prayers and support!"

National Day of Prayer & Remembrance @ State Capital 16th

Indiana to join President in Day of Prayer & Remembrance

Hurricane Katrina has brought much despair, death and darkness. As a church body, we have the ability to be and bring “God’s light” to our nation. Many in the nearby areas are very active in providing physical and financial support at this time. Those of us who are watching from afar can also help by doing our highest civil duty as Christians – pray!! We have the responsibility and need to carry the burdens of our brothers and sisters to the Lord through intercession. EM Bounds puts it this way; “The character and energy of God’s movement lie in prayer. Victory comes at the end of praying!!”

President Bush is calling for a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for those directly affected by Katrina on Friday, September 16th. In response the Indiana National Day of Prayer in cooperation with the Church Federation will be having an observance at the State House Atrium from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Knowing that many want to do something for the survivors and those who have lost loved ones in the Katrina disaster but have yet to be lead as to how to do so or who don't feel they have the financial means we ask you to come and pray for them. Also we have reserved the Indiana State House from 7a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in order to receive those wishing to pray. A prayer balloon release will be offered during the day along with a prayer wall.

This provides the body of Christ with a chance for its greatest hour – to take the lead in uniting our nation in prayer and letting our “light shine before men.”

We are calling upon our nation’s pastors, prayer leaders and volunteers to host prayer observances which will call our country to its knees. As people of prayer encourage churches, state capitols, city halls, workplaces, ministries and groups of believers to open doors and gather on Friday, September 16th as our nation comes together corporately to pray, knowing God Almighty wants Americans to come with our needs.

Below are several tools are available to help believers in prayer on such a short notice:

1- A suggested 1 hour program/order of service Sample Program.pdf

2- A special song and PowerPoint presentation provided by Dennis Jernigan for those
affected.
Download Theme Song

3-Prayer for our nation written by Dr. Henry Blackaby (2006 Honorary Chairman for NDP) BlackabyPrayerOfTheNationKatrina.pdf

4-Bulletin inserts that can be used to encourage and guide churches and others in continual prayer BulletinInsert.pdf

5-Prayer points from the front lines. PrayerPointsWithScriptures.pdf

6-Suggested Scriptures that will encourage and guide your message preparation

God’s desire is for unity among His Body as we are reminded in Romans 15:5

May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Please unite with us in prayer on the National Day of Prayer and Mourning.

Tomorrow... Tues, 9/13... Transform Indiana...

Transform Indiana network of networks meets tomorrow -- Tuesday, September 13, 12noon – 2:00pm. This month, the meeting rotates to Crossroads Bible College, 601 North Shortridge Road, 46219 (Map) 317-352-8736

Reminder: It's 'BYOL'. Coffee & other drinks will be served.

Please join with other pastors, ministry leaders, and others to discuss & to pray together about these issues, which have been placed before the Indianapolis community:

1. How do we fix the family?

2. How do we get churches to come out of their shells and get involved?

3. How do we get parents to step up, to listen to their kids, & not be afraid to set & enforce boundaries?

4. How do we get everyone to do their part to cure this now, not waiting on politicians, police or others?

5. How do we find & develop mentors for our young people, which is clearly part of the solution? Plenty of opportunities. Few volunteer mentors.

6. Jesus Christ is the answer. Prayer is needed. How do we get the faith community praying together to impact our society?

Please plan to attend this meeting, and invite your pastor, or the leader of your ministry!

"In Indianapolis and elsewhere, the poor are often overlooked in a culture built upon bigger and faster, better and more expensive. Greetings & Blessings... from Jarvis Ward, Mississippi

[Several have asked about Jarvis Ward, Mission America Coalition's city-reaching leader... especially knowing of Jarvis' roots in Mississippi and Louisianna. Here's an update.]

From: Jarvis Ward, CityReaching, Mission America Coalition

I just wanted you all to know that Jarvis is now “back on the clock”.

Rick Warren and his team from Saddleback came to help mobilize the pastors to better coordinate efforts each congregation was doing and to also engage other congregations. Simply, he was lending his name for influence.

We have a distribution center both in Jackson and on the coast and are ready to receive properly wrapped and shipped supplies.

Self-sustaining volunteers are needed on the coast (those who come with all they need to live such as tent, bedding, gas, food, etc.)

Through Mission America City Community Ministry, we will send out a detailed email with needs, how to help, and long term follow up things.

AmericaUnited.com -- Connecting & Housing

After Franklin Graham called for Churches to step up and help the homeless from hurricane Katrina last Thursday, some partners (all Christians) started a website Friday ( www.AmericaUnited.com ) to help connect the millions of homeless with faithful families around the country that out of the goodness of their hearts are willing to take in someone in need. We weren't sure it would actually take off, but it has picked up some media coverage on CNN, FOX news, The Washington Times, etc.

Most of the links we have been able to get to this point are from our fellow Christian websites and we would like as many of the people registering to get a family to be Christian homes.
We already have over 2,000 families registered (growing by up to 100 per hour).

There are a couple other websites out there trying to do similar things, but they are not Christian.

Please pass this on to your newsletters if possible, and let me know if you have any questions. The more Christians we can get to the site, the more people we can have an opportunity to minister to in this time of need.

Now go to... AmericaUnited.com and check out the Christian homes in your area... or BE ONE.

God's Word

Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law - a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.
Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Matthew 10:34-38

Katrina Update From The Fairgrounds

"I'm comfortable here," he said, smiling. "These people have given me hope."

Hope is a precious thing at the American Red Cross shelter at the fairgrounds; most of the people staying there lost everything in the hurricane. Davis even lost his wallet, including every piece of identification.

Survivors said Indianapolis is a far cry from the shelters in Louisiana. Here they have three meals a day and comfortable beds. In Louisiana, Harold Mushatt recalled, he saw nothing but chaos."

Operation Katrina Relocation

Jeanne Huiett just reported in again...

They had their first volunteer 'foster family... having read about it here at IndyChristian.com. Praise God!

There will be a special gathering Saturday morning at Hope International Ministries, 1205 E. New York St, here on Indy's east side. People who might be interested in volunteering in any of a zillion different ways should come and listen... and see how it relates to your intentions to BE THE CHURCH of Jesus Christ. More information at 955-0358.

Indy's Hope International Ministries...

Email received from Jeanne Huiett at Hope International Ministries in Indy's inner-city, and affiliated with Operation Blessing, and others...

"We have trucks going to Louisianna, Missippi, and Florida. If anyone would like to help with the trucking cost it would be a blessing to all. Also we are in need of bottled water to send. If anyone could help with that, it would also be a blessing. We are in the process of setting up volunteers to serve in the south, and probably here in our state as flooding is predicted. We have all the supplies necessary, could you recruit teams to go clean, remove debris, and serve meals? Let us know!"

Contact: 955-0358

**********************
Subsequent Note:

We reached Jeanne by phone and she indicated that her Christian contacts in the affected areas asked for:

  • Buses of hard-working people capable of taking care of themselves;
  • Buses of counselors
  • Clothes (later -- currently there's no warehouse space just yet)
  • Foster Families, for all ages, not just children... These people are starting life all over again and need homes to stay in, among people who care... even all the way up here in Indy.
