The conclusion of the whole matter

by Pastor Jim Brown
Calvary Chapel on the Horizon

Ecc 12:13-14 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

============

Solomon, the wisest man ever on the earth, writes out his thoughts in his old age and tells us through the book of Ecclesiastes that all (women (from the man’s perspective), power, money, knowledge, etc.) is vanity or emptiness and he finishes the book in chapter 12 with verses 13 & 14...

V13 tells us that in lieu of all the vanities, we should fear God and keep His commandments (loving Him with our heart, mind, soul, and strength and loving our neighbor as ourselves), but in verse 14 he continues by saying that God shall judge everything – things done publically and things done in private...

What I keep hearing in this is we must “number our days” (Psalm 90:12) and walk circumspectly: redeeming the time (Eph 5:15-16)...we have so little time on this earth to make an impact for the Kingdom of God! Has God placed a call on your life that you are leaving unfulfilled? Maybe you’re saying I have no calling – have you truly asked Him what He would like you to do and then honestly listened and obeyed?

If you are not walking in a right relationship with Jesus, the first thing to do is repent and seek God’s grace and forgiveness and then ask Him...”God, you are my creator – what have you created me for?”

He will tell you! Ephesians 2:10 tells us: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them”.

Pray with me that we take advantage of every opportunity the Lord gives us for furthering His work...

God's Word

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.

God's Word

So they asked him, "Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?" He answered, "I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land." This terrified them and they asked, "What have you done?"

God's Word

Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

"For tonight's two debaters; Please, no head-butting, no ear-pulling, no slapping, no biting and no gagging," Green said tongue-in-cheek. "No eye-gouging, no spine locks, no neck cracks, no faking an injury and no escaping the ring. No hair-pulling, no fish-hooking, no distracting the referee, no groin strikes and no toe locks. No grabbing the throat. No attacks on the windpipe. No punches to the head, kicking below the belt and no unsportsmanlike conduct."

God's Word

A Prayer of David>> Bow down Your ear, O LORD, hear me; For I am poor and needy. Preserve my life, for I am holy; You are my God; Save Your servant who trusts in You! Be merciful to me, O Lord, For I cry to You all day long. Rejoice the soul of Your servant, For to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You. Give ear, O LORD, to my prayer; And attend to the voice of my supplications.
In the day of my trouble I will call upon You, For You will answer me.
Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord; Nor are there any works like Your works. All nations whom You have made Shall come and worship before You, Lord, And shall glorify Your name. For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God. Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name. I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify Your name forevermore. For great is Your mercy toward me, And You have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol. O God, the proud have risen against me, And a mob of violent men have sought my life, And have not set You before them. But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth. Oh, turn to me, and have mercy on me! Give Your strength to Your servant, And save the son of Your maidservant. Show me a sign for good, That those who hate me may see it and be ashamed, Because You, LORD, have helped me and comforted me

YouTuber's View of Weeks of Hope... in Indy

[This 'memories' video is from one of the 'Weeks of Hope' volunteers who came to Indy earlier this summer. This past week we had 50 volunteers on each of several days... working on projects of service, kindness and mercy... during 'Faith Hope & Love Week'. Thank you all so much!]

A (Bus) Loaded Day of Faith Hope and Love...

Here's the photo-log of all the places we found acts of 'faith hope & love' in the city yesterday...

A bus-load of 'Weeks of Hope' volunteers from around the country came down the Unleavened Bread Cafe neighborhood to participate in FHL Week.

Many of them were from Christus Lutheran Church in Greenville, Wisconsin. We praise God for their encouraging service to Indianapolis!

Pastor Joe Reaves, Greater Faith House of Prayer, welcomed the group. Sister Elease Womack, the cafe founder, gave her testimony of how God gave her a vision to start a cafe ministry in the neighborhood... to offer hospitality and hope in the name of Christ.

Pastor Eric Whitaker, Mercy Seat Christian Church, led devotions before the group went out to do community service projects around the urban area.

DON'T MISS THE LICENSE PLATE! LOL

This morning I also had the pleasure of (finally) meeting a long-time internet tech friend, Jeff Miller, 'Xagronaut', from Columbus Ohio. He had turned down an opportunity to go to Grand Rapids for the 'Geeks & God' tech conference (whaddaya crazy? LOL)... and decided instead to come to Indy to join our Faith Hope & Love 'Communications Team'. One of our projects was to go throughout the city during the week, and FIND great works of faith hope and love. Such as...

We found Bob Goodrum up on the roof, threatening to stay there 48 hours...

...or until he gets 48 mentors for his inner-city kids. See the photo-stream (link below) for more photos, and then go surf StarfishInitiative.org.

We also found Chris Provence wandering his urban neighborhood, checking on the progress of the various projects (and potential projects) for Rebuilding The Wall.

Chris told us rather matter-of-factly... "We don't 'help' people, and we don't have any 'programs' "... to which he quickly added... "What we do... is offer opportunities."

Here's one of the RTW projects underway. Rebuilding The Wall is a CCDA type of urban ministry. Click to see some other CCDA affiliates in the city.

We found our friends Becki Jenkins, Anthony Stone and others from Missionary Connection... having breakfast at the cafe before heading out to the streets to do what they do best... find resources to meet needs in the city. In this case, they'll be looking to pick up bread to be distributed at New Wineskin Ministries location at 38th Street and Lafayette Road.

Jeff and I ended up having lunch with Jeff's brother Rich, and his (pastor/author) father, Sam... who'd come with him to help with Faith Hope & Love today... and who had been helping paint inside 'Grace Place'. Founder Dan Gushee (pictured, right) shared his personal testimony about the need for ex-offender housing and accountability.

While many people are leary of such a ministry in THEIR neighborhood, Jeff found one of Dan's guys... Jason... blessing the neighborhood. He was across the street in the yard of a recently widowed neighbor...

...helping yet-other FHL volunteers spruce up her yard and do home maintenance she couldn't otherwise do.

We also found Mark Robinson, Indy's Pro Graphix, dropping off the FHL 'Prayer Trailer' today...

...compliments of our common friend, Bob Irvin (EventPro.com).

Prayer... for the neighborhood
. Later, Sister Elease (Womack, ministry-leader at the cafe) shared with me what a blessing it was for her personally to be able to go out and pray with our prayer-trailer volunteers. [Thank you all so much!]

I went out to White River Christian Church (Noblesville) to hear FHL's special guest speakers for the week... Daniel Bernard and Steve Sjogren.

Neil Cox, Steve Sjogren and Ellen Spencer

I'd had a chance to meet Steve for the first time, just a few hours earlier at the Prayer Trailer when it was set up in the cafe neighborhood. Several years ago, Steve coined the term 'Servant Evangelism' as he entitled his book by that name. [In fact, he introduced himself to us as 'the pastor who had cleaned the most toilets in the world'. *LOL* ]

Steve has now planted churches in several cities... most recently in Tampa Bay.

It was good to see our friend Daniel Bernard (Somebody Cares Tampa Bay) again too. Daniel's book 'City Impact' has been highly instrumental here in Indy, including its usage for the final course before students can graduate at Crossroads Bible College.

The book now is being republished by its new title... "The Church At Its Best".

Come to think of it... that's a great summarization of today's activities... "the Church at its best"!

See the photo-stream so far during 'Faith Hope & Love Week' here in Indy.

Capturing Acts of Faith Hope and Love... Urban VBS

Part of our Communications Team assignment this week is to go capture OTHER neat acts of faith, hope and love during FHL Week. Here's one such activity...

Greater Faith House of Prayer Church meets in the community room of the Unleavened Bread Cafe (truly) in the heart of the inner-city.

This week is their 3rd week this summer of doing something special with the kids in the neighborhood. In this case, it's VBS -- Vacation Bible School at the cafe each evening.

A small-group from Carmel has connected with a small-group from Broad Ripple to help support the VBS this week. What a cool collaborative initiative -- PTL.

How about YOUR small-group? Do you have a service project as a 'team' within the larger Church at Indianapolis?

Stay tuned this week for more coverage with photos & video as we find 'faith hope & love' going on in our city.

Here's the photo-stream this week!

Roof Stunt Today... To Recruit Mentors... It's THAT Important.

[from the Indianapolis Star...]

If you drive past 841 N. Delaware St. today, you might see something moving up on the roof.

That's Starfish Initiative's Bob Goodrum, who's spending 48 hours atop the organization's building to "raise the roof on graduation rates" in a push for new mentors.

Day Forty: Faith, Hope and Love 2008: Daily Prayer Focus /Cuarenta Dia: Fe, Esperanza y Amor 2008 Enfoco Diario de Oracionesnco

Our prayer focus for Faith, Hope and Love Week is taken from Hebrews 12:1-3

Prayer for Today, July 26, 2008/26 de julio, 2008:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men
, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

We declare blessing over the city of Indianapolis. We bless our leaders, churches, local governments, institutions, the market-place, entertainment, sports. We cry out for the release of every soul chained in bondage. We won’t regard today merely as the end of a week of ministry but as the beginning of a year of faith. We will not grow weary and lose heart - we will put our faith in You as we continue to run our race.

Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men…”.

Father, we will face opposition from many arenas - spiritually, financially, relationally, and physically. But we recognize that You are here - and we fix our eyes on You! Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit who carries us through all manner of hardship. We worship You that we can endure in Your strength.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Lord, help us to press in for the poor. Just like You endured shame and hardship for us, let us do the same for the poor of the city. You said that the poor will always be among us. We are all poor in different ways - some financially, some spiritually, some relationally, some emotionally, some morally. The “ways” may be different but the answer is the same. Help us carry Your good news to every kind of poverty we encounter.

giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

For those of you who are unaware of this outreach, the Lord laid on my heart to offer free oil change to the go-go dancers along Pendleton Pike....

[From a Faith Hope & Love Volunteer...]

Good Morning! Just wanted to thank you for praying for our 'outreach' yesterday..... it was a day we will never forget. Your prayers were instrumental, we are SURE, for helping to open doors..... God himself went before us, paved the way, and it was like a red carpet of favor welcomed us into two of the saddest places in Indianapolis. We were in the midst of and face to face with the deepest pits of immorality, yet felt we had just met some of the most beautiful sisters in the world!

The Holy Spirit led us to call before going.... though I couldn't reach any managers, until we were literally sitting outside "Babes" on Pend. Pike. Susan W and I (Jane S joined us later) made one last attempt to call, found the nicest bar-tender girl who, after hearing our offer of free oil changes, yelled to one of the girls, "Hey, didn't that mechanic say the next thing you needed was an oil change? Yes, today is her birthday, and she just got her car back today..." When I asked if we could "come in" to give her the certificate and sign her up, she said, I think there are more here who could really use that....."

So in we went. It was as if more than the visible 'smoke' blinded my eyes, for we both felt such an ease - like no effort ..... for God was in control. We had instant friendships with these women. At one point, after NINE had immediately signed up - I said we had hoped to especially help some of the single moms.... to which the bartender (Miranda) said, "Honey, every girl on that list is a single mom......" One asked Susan if we had free 'groceries' to give away. Our hearts were broken, yet filled . We had made new friends. We prayed with 3-4 that God would bless them as moms, we prayed for one to GET a new car, we prayed birthday blessings, etc.

During all the conversing, (again in the midst of 'business as usual'), Miranda gets on the phone and says, "Hey, our 'sister-business" the Harem down the street has a lot of girls that could benefit too,.... can I call them?" God opened the door. We went in to the "Harem" , felt a little more 'resistance', but knew God was there when, as we were simply walking in, this beautiful, tall woman says, "Hey - whatever they're selling, we want some!" Her friend agreed.... So we smiled and asked, "Why do you say that?" And she said, "Cause there's a light and glow all over you! " To which we told her it was Jesus who let us there.......

And the stories continued. By the end of the next hour and getting to pray for many, one special new friend, (pray for Bianca), was allowing us to pray over her right there at the bar, laying on hands, and Jane starts prophesying boldly over her life. (four boys at home, just got kicked out of their 'home', trying to earn money to find a place to live,... etc.) (It's like Susan said, "Of course, they are all single moms.... what else would make you do this?" )

So thanks for your 'effective prayers!" We praise God for his faithfulness, and his heart for these women, and the new friends we made. We signed up over 16 to come to FHL's Free Oil Change on the 26th, and they gave us their phone numbers so we can give them a 'reminder call'. I can't wait to talk to some of them, and maybe get to see them again at Post and 10th on that day.

Please pray for Bianca, and for these moms.... and if you have any creative ideas on getting them 'grocery cards' or leads on jobs, let us know. We'll be going back again!

Dungy Helps Ex-Cons Lead New Lives

Tony Dungy knows a thing or two about comebacks. The Indianapolis Colts head coach and new honorary chairman of the city's ex-offender re-entry efforts said his work mentoring men behind bars usually involves focusing on how the individual got into trouble in the first place.

"We start to talk about what went wrong, just like we talk to my team after a loss and realize problems," Dungy said at a news conference at the Colts' complex to announce his role.

God's Word

If I speak in the tongues {1 Or } of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
