World Net Daily: "Allstate terminates manager over homosexuality column"

[Excerpted from World Net Daily]

"On own time, man posted anti-'gay' article insurance giant says didn't reflect its values"

"A former manager with Allstate has sued the insurance giant, alleging the company, which financially supports homosexual advocacy groups, fired him solely because he wrote a column posted on several websites that was critical of same-sex marriage and espoused his Christian beliefs."

Looking for 'Emergent' churches...

Here's an interesting email that I thought I'd post, in hopes of getting some comment-feedback... maybe some web-links to 'emergent churches' here in the Indy area...

"Don't know if you can help me or not -- but I'm a pastor from VA, and will be in Indianapolis [soon]. I'm trying to find an emergent church in the area for worship. I'm particularly interested in churches that are attemtping to worship in creative ways. Any suggestions?"

One City, One Book? "City Impact"

Considering that "Transform Indiana" ministry coalition leaders are now 3 years into the concept of city-reaching... and considering the many pastors & leaders we've talked with, conferences attended, books read... if you put them all together in book form... it couldn't come out as great as "City Impact", by Daniel Bernard, Executive Director of Somebody Cares Tampa Bay. ($12)

At Transform Indiana meetings, we can hope to impact a few pastors & leaders for an hour or two. But imagine the 'city impact' if we get this book out into the hands of many Christian pastors, elders and other 'driven Christians' around Indianapolis, for several hours of quiet reading and careful consideration!

Sure, buy a copy online or at a nearby Christian bookstore -- it's new, so if they don't have it, ask them to order it for you -- but then also recommend it for your favorite pastor [or better yet, buy 'em a copy]. Who knows just what God might do as a result of your actions?

"Spoken"... Professor wants you on videotape.

"Patrick Craig Manning wants to hear what you have to say.

An assistant professor of photography at Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Manning wants to videotape Indiana residents 18 and older talking about their opinions, dreams, ideas, memories and cherished places.

He's going to use the resulting video footage to create an installation called "Speak/Spoken," which will be shown on two outdoor screens under West Street Bridge along the canal in Downtown Indianapolis.

According to Manning, "Speak/Spoken" will be both a record of what his interview subjects say and a means for people to hear and see one another in an urban environment..."

God's Word

Looking at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. IndyStar Editorial: Convention Center draws other local benefits too

[Great editorial by the Star staff today...]

"[Indianapolis Star] position is: Local benefits of hosting large national conventions are on display this week.

Forgive us for mixing religion and politics, but we just can't resist the temptation.

You see the Church of the Nazarene convention is in town, and the witness that the 40,000 participants are providing stretches well beyond the doors of their churches. By the time they finish work today, more than 2,200 Nazarenes will have helped repair 110 homes in the city. Other volunteers will have fixed up more than 20 city parks.

But not even those good deeds measure the extent of the convention's benefits to the city. Participants are filling hotels and restaurants, on course to spend about $40 million in Central Indiana by the time the convention ends July 1."

[continued at IndyStar.com]

[IndyChristian.com Ed.Note: Christ-like acts of service to the city's poor speak loudly. Again, God bless all of you who are involved in such projects. Btw, here's a community ministry founded by the Nazarenes, which stays in Indy all year, every year... Shepherd Community. And later this year... in November, Indianapolis will host the national CCDA convention, bringing thousands of Christian community development folks to our city.]

IndyStar: Hostettler & Durbin should 'cool it'.

IndyChristian.com Ed. Note: It seems ironic that the Star so strongly calls for Congressman Hostettler to 'cool it' regarding his strong assertions of anti-Christian attitudes on Capitol Hill.

Nazarenes help fix up our neighborhoods...

"Many hands, One mission"
In town for convention, thousands of
church volunteers repair homes for free.
[Excerpts from the great article by Rob Schneider, with contributions by Robert King, in today's Indianapolis Star. ]

"James and Barbara Mosley sat in their back yard Wednesday looking stunned. They had been told months ago what would happen when the Church of the Nazarene convention came to town this week, but James Mosley still shook his head and said, 'I'm shocked.' "

"Though it's hard to put a price tag on the One Heart-Many Hands effort, the convention's economic impact goes well beyond the sweat expended repairing Indianapolis homes. 'Financially, it's our largest convention of the year based on economic impact,' said Bob Schultz, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association."

IndyStar.com opens blog columns to comments...

IndyStar.com now has added some blog functionality to its online editorial page.

Perhaps the significance of this escapes some of you, but let me go out on a limb and congratulate the Indianapolis Star for opening (some of) its editorial pieces to 'comments' by online users.

[Expresso] [Fresh Thoughts] [In Touch]

And you can track your favorite Star bloggers... Example: Dr. A. Charles Ware, Crossroads Bible College. And Kevin Bain.

And perhaps best of all... most of these pages have an 'RSS feed'. ["Why Feed RSS to the Aggregators?"]

I'm guessing they soon may even be permalinking their articles (so we can refer to them permanently, knowing they'll be there for years to come... not just a couple of weeks). After all, disk space is virtually free these days -- why not? That'd add great value for those of us linking folks to their articles online.

Or how about this... Can you imagine if they added a comment section for some of their editorial staff opinions? Today, for instance... take Dan Carpenter..... Please.

[No. Too tempting. Not going there.]

Bottom line: 'Comments' are one of the reasons why I'm so 'big on blogs'... believing that God has given us new paradigm capabilities to help re-connect the Church, better communicate among them, and to let truth be sharpened at the speed of Light. Secular and Christian positions can now be more easily known, truth documented, debated openly and myths dismissed. With a decreased ability to isolate one's followers (and feed 'em whatever propaganda you want), truth will rise to the top.

So congratulations Dennis & tech staff at the Star. It's a bold move.

Christians... A new opportunity just arose, didn't it? Unlike (print-world) 'Letters to the Editor', online comments presumably will not be selective or edited. So let me suggest you regularly keep abreast of the Star online, and leave significant comments as appropriate.

"Truth will prevail. Truth at the speed of light will prevail at the speed of Light."

*************************

Subsequent note: LOL. Oops. Spoke too soon. Tried to leave a comment just now on the "In Touch" section blogpost entitled "Stop Hostettler".... and it errored out during the preview mode. And after hitting the POST button, it thanked me for 'posting'.... but didn't display the comment... So apparently the comments ARE being moderated. [Sorry to see that, but I understand.] Thus it make take a while for your comment to show up. If your comment never shows up, let them know [and let us know also].

Gannett Eying Emmis TV Stations

[from IBJ.com]

"Gannett Co. is considering buying all 16 television stations owned by locally based Emmis Communications Corp., Bloomberg News reported today.

Responding to a question, Gannett CEO Douglas McConkindale said this morning at the 2005 NAA Mid-Year Media Review that his company is looking at various opportunities, including the Emmis stations, said Tara Connell, a Gannett spokeswoman.

"If it makes sense economically, then we will do it," McConkindale said at the media review, according to the Bloomberg story."

Why Bible College? Why Crossroads?

Dr. Charles Ware, Pres.
Crossroads Bible College

Why Bible College?

The Bible is the heart and core of every educational program at Crossroads. We believe it to be the inspired, inerrant, authoritative Word of God, the all-sufficient source of truth. Theologically, Crossroads is conservative and evangelical, which means your Christian faith will not be attacked but built up. We affirm the historic fundamentals held by all true Christians, regardless of denomination, through the ages.

At Crossroads we are persuaded that what we are is as important as what we know. Therefore we place much effort in developing Christ-like character and a servant's heart. You will be challenged to live a balanced, mature, consistent Christian life.

Why Crossroads?

With a racially integrated board, administration, faculty, staff, and student body, Crossroads is a national leader in modeling and promoting multiethnic ministry. At Crossroads you will learn to appreciate the heritages and cultures of those different from yourself and develop a love for all people.

Training Christian Leaders to Reach a Multiethnic Urban World for Christ—that's not just an empty slogan at Crossroads. We are committed to the city and to biblical racial reconciliation. Blended with these are our strong emphasis upon expository preaching/teaching, biblical counseling, discipleship, and church planting.

Gay Rights A Political Tightrope For Gov. Daniels

"Gov. Mitch Daniels is straddling a divide in the Republican Party over how far the party should go in recognizing gay rights.

Essay Contest Winner: "What does the Drop-in Center mean to me?"

Latrice, 15

"Well it means a lot to me, it's a place were I could go and relax and meet new friends. I think it's a good thing to have a place in the ghetto were you could go to. To me it's a place to get young boys and girls off the street. Kids go there to play games, relax, make new friend, and to stay off the streets. Also, it's a place where adults could treat you with respect, not many adults I know talk to me the way the adults do at the drop in center.

Secondly, it's also a holy place. They're always telling you about god and how much he loves you. For those who don't go to church, well the drop-in center would be the spot..." [continued]

This week's 'Not-for-Profit News'

[This was so cute... not to mention, effective... It was hard not to point you all to Bryan Orander's great newsletter... and RTW's.]

"It's hard to believe that we are 200 editions into the Not-for-Profit eNews. As many of you know, this is largely a volunteer effort, supplemented by small fees from advertising. We have retained our commitment to not competing with you for grant funding and plan to stay that way.
I hear stories every week about people who have new jobs because of a posting in the newsletter, found a valuable new resource, or learned about something they had missed in the paper - and from employers about the great candidates they get when they advertise. We also have dozens of organizations that benefit each year from the Swap Meet.

We often have people ask us if they can make a donation to thank us for the work we do - either meeting a specific need or producing this newsletter week in and week out. We usually say "No, but thanks". In June 2005, we are saying 'YES, PLEASE MAKE A DONATION, but not to us'."

[Also... specially notice "Swap Meet Collaborators Wanted". Great idea, Bryan.]

IndyStar: "Give them a pass to observe religion."

Excerpted from IndyStar.com's Editorial page...

"Our position is: Students should be excused for legitimate religious observances provided schoolwork is made up.

School officials in Lake County are being sued for refusing to give an excused absence to a student attending a weeklong religious event called Festival of the Holy Days, observed by the United Church of God, a Christian denomination that doesn't celebrate Christmas or Easter.

In a pluralistic society, school officials certainly have difficulty accommodating the needs of every child and his or her parents."

WhenYouNeedSomeone.com... for Addictions?

A Christian friend wrote me today...

"I am writing specifically to learn if you can be of any help in my locating a faith-based resource that will help a friend overcome an addiction to crack."

Many Christians around the city would like to know such things:

"Where can I turn to help get food, shelter, clothing, transportation, counseling, or.....?"

That is the very purpose that some Christian ministries networked here in the Greater Indianapolis area have started working together to compile such answers to these questions. And IndyChristian.com has made the answers available at a sister-site called...

"Welcome... You've come to the right place. Jesus loves you, and so do we. He said, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' We're a long ways from perfect, or perfectly-able to meet all your needs... but we care, and our network of providers will try to help as best we possibly can."

The WhenYouNeedSomeone (WYNS) network is currently only a virtual listing of various services recommended by some key ministries here in the Greater Indianapolis area. The past compilation has been largely accomplished through the generosity of one anonymous donor working through an unnamed, Christ-driven ministry in the city -- who has in turn published a small pocket-sized guide to these services, suitable for use by pastors, police, counselors and others.

[Here's the link to how you may obtain a copy of this small guide. Or if you would like to help fund the updating of this guide in the next printing, please contact us and we'll put you in touch with the lead-ministry who is providing it.]

As you'll see at the site, the needs are categorized into a dozen main rolled-up categories. Many 'needs' are the very types of needs that Jesus himself dealt with and commands us to help our 'neighbors' with. He didn't stop with just helping with their physical needs, but went on to offer them healing of their much more important need... their need for an eternally-abundant life. Likewise, we would of course like to most often recommend needs-providers who are motivated and able to also deal with the spiritual needs of our friends & neighbors.

So please help us to add/delete/edit the resources listed at the site and in the pocket-guide.

For example, using today's question above... You'll see at the site, that 'ADDICTIONS' is one of the main rolled-up categories. Take a moment to review this short list. If you know of additional resources that deal primarily with addictions, please contact us.

Or if you would like to participate in the compilation/editing process to help research or speed this effort, perhaps God has equipped you for exactly such a time as this. Let us hear from you.

And as always, prayer is readily available throughout the area.

Religious discrimination suit filed against Indianapolis Star

(Indianapolis) -- According to documents received today from the office of John Price, Attorney, suit was filed yesterday in U.S. District Court against Gannett Co., Inc., owner of the Indianapolis Star, alleging religious, age and racial discrimination.

Complaintants James Patterson and Lisa Coffey are described in the suit as as people with strong and sincere Christian religious beliefs. Both cited hostility by management toward Christianity and Christian employees of The Star. The suit also accuses the Star of "displaying strong disagreement with anyone who had a Biblical view of homosexuality", and is said to have "implemented a policy and practice of encouraging, favoring and printing news coverage and editorials with a positive slant on homosexuality and of disfavoring editorials with a positive slant on Christianity".

The suit cites numerous awards won and positive evaluations over the years by both complaintants.

Patterson, a 51-year old African-American man also cited age and racially related forms of discrimination.

Ms. Coffey alleges constructive-termination in 2003 after 14 years of employment. Mr. Patterson was terminated in May 2005, having worked at the paper since 1989.

Bloomington pastors writes about the passing of Kenneth Taylor

"Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old." -Proverbs 23:22

Bloomington Pastor Tim Bayly writes about the passing of his father-in-law, a great saint among evangelicals, Kenneth Taylor... founder of Tyndale House Publishers.

"Ken Taylor was my father-in-law, and what a wonderful father-in-law he was!"

["Kenneth respected the Word, but he wrestled with archaisms in the King James Bible—a certain portent of future editorial tasks. As publisher and writer, he would similarly honor the Bible and its effective communication." ...excerpted from Christianity Today]

"Ken was known around the world as the translator of The Living Bible, which sold more than 40 million copies...

He began his translation work in the early 1950s, when he would paraphrase portions of Scripture for use in the family’s daily devotions. Much of this work was done on the train as he commuted between Wheaton and Chicago. The result of that early work was a book called Living Letters, which was a modern-language paraphrase of the New Testament epistles. He couldn’t find a publisher who was interested in the project, so he decided to publish it himself. Living Letters went on to sell millions of copies after Billy Graham began giving copies to his television audience. Ken paraphrased the rest of the Bible over the next nine years, and The Living Bible was published in 1971. It was the best-selling book in America in 1972 and 1973."

God's Word

Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

Christians say they do best at relationships, worst at Bible knowledge

"Nine out of ten adults contend that their faith is very important in their life, and three out of every four adults who consider themselves to be Christian say there are aspects of their faith life they would like to improve. A new national survey by The Barna Group discovered that there are two faith dimensions in which people are most likely to desire such improvement, but that few people believe that they are immature in any of seven aspects of faith practice."

"Perhaps the outcomes of the survey will encourage church leaders to help people not only prioritize their spiritual development, but also to consider what spiritual transformation looks like in practical terms. The old adage tells us that ‘you get what you measure’ and the survey revealed that most Christians don’t measure much of anything beyond church attendance when it comes to their spiritual maturity. This information could help leaders assist followers of Christ in connecting the dots regarding the meaning of and the route to spiritual growth.”
